Lollapalooza '07: Sunday In Photos

Sometimes you have great intentions of diligence and punctuality, and sometimes your airline decides to be late, sloppy, and in love with sitting on the runway. The terra blue chips and (congratulations!) 36 channels of DirectTV didn't quite make up for it, but still -- we're back safe from Lolla, and now that you have our apologies for a late Day Last photo wrap, let's do this. Sunday brought ample opportunity for fest folks to check in with the hype (Amy Winehouse, Peter Bjorn & John), to watch EdVed Lolla gag his way around the fest (first rocking with Kings Of Leon, then riding Dennis Rodman), and to take in a side dish of high art (My Morning Jacket with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra).

Killing it as always were TV On The Radio ("Staring At The Sun" one of the best set-closing staples in rock right now) and, of course, the one and only !!!. Nic Offer and his smirked up pelvic thrusting put yet another tally point in his column for front man of the year, though his crowd-baiting exhibitionism wasn't quite enough to cover up the absence of other-vocalist John Pugh, who has in fact quit the band (we confirmed with Nic later that night). So not quite a dance-punk octet right now, but Shannon Funchess played a bigger role than she did at their fest-stealing Coachella set, and just maybe the roving BK session star is finding a more permanent home as a soulful tentacle in the !!! octopus.

We've got some vid of MMJ with the orchestra (after Perry Farrell's request that we all record the moment to send to CurrentTV, how could we resist?), and other select scraps, but this bit was too good to sit on....

Yes, it's commercial-turned-sitcom star Caveman. Is that why everyone says Lolla's gotten too corporate?

Pic via Swade's Flickr. Said attendee was way more excited to see a Geico Neanderthal than most of the bands ("hands down the best celebrity sighting of the day. the fucking geico caveman. i got an unsolicited peace sign from pete yorn, stood with patti smith while she ate a temptation mint chocolate chip cone ... they pale in comparison to the caveman."). And we're all for Nick Kroll getting some primetime pay, but the pilot failed to impress. Anyone surprised? While you wait for Fabrice Fabrice to get a show, check out our pics of rock stars and Juliette Lewis. Thanks again to Abbey Braden for the great shots all weekend.

I like Nic Offer. You know why? Because he's not afraid to rock the shorts. Seriously. I don't think I have ever seen a picture of any band member from any outdoor summer festival rocking shorts.

Who's that creepy dude watching Modest Mouse? Looks like Oliver Stone on a three-week bender.

Bob Weir used to wear shorts quite a bit in concert during the 80s.

Almost don't recognize MMJ in their snazzy tuxedos.

How can you forget (unless you're too young to have ever known in the first place) the really short shorts Stewart Copeland used to wear?

The expression on the face of the Smoosh sister on the right is far creepier than the appearance of that indie-hipster from Atlanta.

I guess I should have said recent (last 4 years) outdoor music festivals of the indie variety. Especially ones where it is about 100 degrees outside.

I have seen Bob Weir wear shorts. And no, I'm not too young to forget Stewart Copeland's short shorts. But thanks for thinking I was. With the way me knee hurts today, I feel about as old as Stewart Copeland.

How about it Scott, can you think of any pictures of indie band members wearing shorts?
