mtvU 2007 Woodie Awards: Spank Rocked

There's a grand tradition being hatched at mtvU's Woodie Awards show. Sure, there's the live performances that come at a 50/50 mix of stuff we like (last year TV On The Radio, this year, say, Rilo Kiley) and stuff we don't (last year and this year: most of the rest) and the knack of tragic award selections (Best Video to Say Anything, over TVOTR's "Province" and Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."). But really, the legacy is cemented in the pit, off camera, where people stop being polite and start being real. Unfortunately, Jared Leto wasn't on hand to repeat last year's douchextranveganza, but this annum's wild card came from a man much nearer and dearer to our hearts.

No, we didn't liveblog the Woodies. And in so doing, not only did we miss our opportunity to comment (in realtime!) on the guyliner parade passing before us, but we also lost our chance to have Spank Rock hijack our site with CAPITAL LETTERS and extr*ane#s symb@ls. Our loss was Best Week Ever's gain. Here's what came from Naeem's rantastic splurge:

i stole a SHEW FRUM ALDO! I’M AT THE WOODY’S BLO0GGERS TABLE. MY DAD’S NAME IS WOODY. NOT JOKING! I TRIEDC TO MAKE OUT WITH TOM DULONGGG. HE WAS INTO IT BUT THERE WERE TOOO MANY CAMAMARERES AROUND. I UNDERSTAND….. I DRANK SOME B*TCH ASS N*GGAS (Ed. Note - That would be Gothamist Guy) BEER. HE AIN;’T DO SH*T. CAUSE I’M GANGSTER. I’M JUST A WILD ASS N*GGA DOING WILD ASS N*GGA SH*T!
About that attempted makeout session with Tom DeLonge, see this. You can read that "B*TCH ASS" blogga's take on the situation at Gothamist. And here's a picture of BWE blogger Alex Blagg handling the situation well, and patiently (via Gothamist):

Before, during, and after all this, the Woodies happened. Q-Tip and Talib Kweli presented. Tokyo Police Club did well onstage with "Nature Of The Experiment." Rilo Kiley did an unplugged/guitar-case-beating "Moneymaker." Spank Rock killed it along with our beloved Santogold, doing some Bangers & Cash and some "Rick Rubin," with lots of girls onstage; it was Spank's night all around. And The Academy Is... came out with a string section. Surprisingly, it didn't suck! It sucked orchestrally. Annie Lennox presented the award for most philanthropic band, and it was just as much a pleasure to see her in the flesh as it was to hear "Good Woodie" repeatedly with such dignified elocution. Naeem wasn't done with the show, though. After getting kicked out, Spank hit the afterparty where he tried to run up VJ Kim Stolz's skirt during his post-show interview. Literally. Don't think that'll make the telecast. Now, since only the collegiate folk amongst you will ever even see these things, scroll down for ace photog Abbey Braden's harvest from braving the red carpet and Roseland Ballroom all night. Featuring emo bands that you don't care about! And some other artists that you totally do, promise.

I am a college student, and as much as I hate MTV, they did succeed in two important things:
1] jenny looks hotter here than she has in a long time
2] spreading the gospel of madvillain, albeit like three years too late (seriously, what the fuck?)

i agree with rachel. though, to be fair, jenny seems to bat about .500 when it comes to her wardrobe.

I feel like making tired guyliner jokes makes you a stereotypical aging hipster that is just as 2 dimensional and incapable of individual thought as the emos you love to hate.

You may hate these people, and they may hate us. But the whole rest of the nonthinking world hates both groups equally. If hipsters and emos made music together, there's would have some content and ours would be more exciting.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...
