O'Death/The Big Sleep @ Spiegeltent, NYC 9/27/06

For the ninth installment of its music showcase, Gothamist took Movable Hype to the Spiegeltent, a touring, mirrored performance hall and beer garden, docked on Pier 17 of the South Street Seaport. Aside from the initial disorientation from walking into what is, essentially, a circular hall of mirrors, the tent's vibe and sound were perfect for O'Death and The Big Sleep.

Brooklyn's O'Death have done well to realize that the only things missing from traditional bluegrass are brutalizing kit work and a dose of carnival freak-show (ala Man Man). An occasional shriek from the drummer, speedy banjoes, mountain harmonies and double stacked, mangled crash-cymbal pounding round out their update on Appalachian folk. Have these MP3s but know that they sound even better live (and in a mirrored tent). Brooklyn Vegan also enjoyed.

O'Death - "Down To Rest" (MP3)
O'Death - "Only Daughter" (MP3)

We've been crushing on local favorites the The Big Sleep for a good while and are proud of their French Kiss debut Son Of The Tiger. We've caught their blazing live show too many times to count over the past few months but missed their well-reviewed CD release party at Mercury Lounge. Last night saw 'em in top form, as always, killing with their psych-noise rock, served up with keyboards, walls of guitars, dark grooves, and rhythmic riffage. And they look great doing it. Head to Ryspace for some live tracks from the show (particularly the awesome, unreleased tracks, labeled "05" and "06").

The Big Sleep - "Son Of The Tiger" (MP3)
The Big Sleep - "Murder" (MP3)

The cast of internet sitcom The Burg hosted the evening and kicked it off with a death-defying display of "Man Flipping Knife While Friend Plays Harmonica, Nervously." Not for the faint of heart.

The Burg's send up of trust-fund Williamsburg hipsters will bring a tear to your eye if you've ever strolled Bedford Ave. We suggest starting with their group reading of a lengthy, unpunctuated hate comment ('cause it's fucking hysterical), and then moving onto Episode 101: Cred. If you haven't been out and about in Billyburg, consider it your first trip.

Rounding out the night was a DJ set from Stellastarr*, drenching the Spiegeltent's beer garden in '80s hits and ensuring that nobody made it to work on time this morning.

I just had some friends in North Carolina and Georgia pick me up some O'Death tshirts since the likelyhood of them ever coming to Florida is slim.

i don't understand why everyone's jerking it to the big sleep. it's pretty mediocre and boring. at least jump on another band wagon for the next 3 weeks.

If the person who left the first comment thinks Akron/Family and O'death sound like than they aren't listening very closely.

The Big Sleep are the best thing to come out of NY in years. My band played a show w/ them at Northsix in the spring and I was blown away. I hadn't heard of them before that, but I became an instant fan. Good to see them getting the recognition they deserve.
