Rolling Stones Bring A Tempered Bang To China

The Stones finally performed in China Saturday night after serveral failed attempts over the past 25 years. (A concert was planned in 2003, but cancelled because of SARS concerns.)

As expected, censors banned at least five songs, reportedly:

  • "Brown Sugar"
  • "Honky Tonk Women"
  • "Beast of Burden"
  • "Let's Spend the Night Together"
  • "Rough Justice"
Some racy tunes like "Midnight Rambler" and "Sympathy for the Devil" slipped through, along with commie anthem "Start Me Up" which was the opening number.

Ni hao Shanghai!!! Are you ready to rock and stay seated?!

AP reports that the 8000-strong crowd at Grand Stage was mostly foreign, though Chinese audience members seemed pleased with the show.

"'So old, and yet he can really perform,' Song Jianghong said, referring to Jagger, 62."
After the encore, the band promised to return to the communist mainland in another twenty-five years.

Keef smiles after the Minister Of Culture promises to hook him up with some fresh Chinese blood.

Maybe "Keef" can also buy some organs from the Chinese government too.

I hear the kidneys of executed political prisoners and Falun Gong adherents are quite ready for transplant when Keith's inevitably fail.

Let's not forget the Stones were censored in the US, in 2006:

If it rox it rox and The Stones still rock!!! Thing is tho, unless they played 2 or 3 of the "banned" songs in their set (to test the guv, see if the lads can still leave), it's really just an oldies show, a'int it?

Anyways, LUV what U R doin here, keep at it!!! If U wanna hear new rock songs for sale online, plus sample free tracks, you can find great Australian bands, Canadian singer/songwriters at the Blue Pie Artists weblog

What you are all saying is stupid. What band out in the music industry play like they do? no one, and lets also not forget that they are in their 60s. They look fucking awesome for being in their 60s. not many men that old or women for that matter can still rock out like they do. and on top of that they play 2 hour sets. honestly, no band out there that is in their 20s even play for that long. I saw them 3 times in the past year! its too bad that we honestly, as a younger generation do not have anyone remotely that good to look forward to growing out with.

I disagree with Meg. The two best live bands in the world, I think, are The Flaming Lips and Radiohead. And no matter how "hard" they "rock" it doesn't make a band a good live act. Granted, I have nothing against the Stones ('cept maybe that they only put out two good albums after the Beatles broke up) and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them. Then again, let me weight my options: $40 for GA at a Flaming Lips show or $150 for a half-way decent seat at a Stones concert. I'll go with the Lips.

I also disagree that our generation's bands aren't as good as what the 60's had to offer. I think there have always been equally good bands as the Beatles or the Stones. The boomers just won't own up to that. The only difference is that, given their output, the Beatles are the most consistent band in history.

Keith is actually looking better. In fact, I think that picture of Mick is worse. How is that possible. I understand all of the other songs, but "Beast of Burden"? Come on.

Oh, and thanks Zoli. I was trying to forget about Prussian Blue.

I'll say that the Stones put on a freakin' awesome show, albeit expensive one... my only annoyance is that they always play the same songs over and over and throw in just a few obscure ones for the real fans. If I hear 'Start me Up', 'It's Only Rockin' Roll', or 'Satisfaction' ever again... it'll be way too soon.
