Sasquatch 2008 In Photos Pt. 2

thubmnail icon: Sasquatch 2008 In Photos Pt. 2

Our second and final Sasquatch! dispatch comes with fewer bands than Part One, but a deeper look at them. Last time we teased Wayne Coyne's ability to convince young girls to get on stage and dance naked during his U.F.O. party. This time we actually have some images to back it up. Also on the docket, compliments of photographer Chona Kasinger: pics of Flight Of The Conchords getting down to business time, visual evidence of Tyondai and his Battles crushing it, a black & white spread of Stephen Malkmus and Janet the Jick, shots of Ben Gibbard still being skinny, photos of Jamie Lidell being soulfully animated, a spread of the Hives essentially doing the same, and oh yeah of Robert Smith looking like ... well, some things are better left seen and not said.

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS

JAMIE LIDELL

STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS

BATTLES

THE HIVES

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE

BUILT TO SPILL

THE CURE

these were all accidentally shot in basic compression so i actually used very little lightroom except for vignetting, desaturation, and exposure bumping on the lidell shot with the mic in my dace 'cos he was blocking the light.

Robert Smith would actually be a perfectly normal-looking middle-aged guy if he got a haircut and wiped off his makeup. But I think being a perfectly normal-looking middle-aged guy doesn't hold much appeal for him.

As an aside, friends who saw the Cure's set at Sasquatch said he was losing his voice. The next night in Vancouver he was fine voice, however.

These photos are super-good, reminding me once again that I need to hit-up Sasquatch one of these years.

another set of winners! I love the pictures of the Flaming Lips, especially the one where Wayne is looking much more interested in his confetti gun than in the swarm of naked women dancing around him.

I would guess the average age of a performer at Monterrey Pop, or Woodstock, was less than 25 years old. Is 40 is the new 25? Are there some giant crappy emo festivals happening somewhere and I'm oblivious? Is live performance for the middle aged and older? These are the things I wonder when I look at these lovely photos.

Seriously disappointment with Wayne Coyne & Flaming Lips! First they buddy up with Playboy, now they're so-very-tired cock rockers thinking it's edgy to be surrounded by naked women. Apart from the sexist objectification arguments, it's just so boring and tired to see middle aged men getting young women to take their clothes off to gratify their egos - so bored of innovative musicians I admire being so clichéd when it comes to their dicks! Not cool.

aw, you wish you were there, huh.

he gave this long explanation before the song that when he was ten and he first heard it he imagined that it was so powerful that people would just take their clothes off and dance. he really didn't sexualize it at all. in the context of the whole show, it made perfect sense. and it was a surprisingly great cover too.

@ Adrian - I'm not sure that nude (not naked!) women necessarily equals objectification. It's not like they are plastic women spreading for the camera. It looks like they are having fun and are part of the spectacle of Flaming Lips show. I doubt anyone is getting off to it. Seriously disappointed with your assumptive knee-jerk reaction to nudity! Not cool.

I wouldn't think it was sexist if there were some naked dudes running around too. Just because they are an indie band doesn't make them immune to objectifying women.

@ Libby - You probably wouldn't think it were sexist if it was a reunited Sleater-Kinney and not the all male Flaming Lips doing this. I doubt their intent or effect was too objectify women. They may have been making allusions to countless works of art that features female nudes. Maybe it was symbolic that it was only women. There a lot of potential reasons as to why they included the nude female form in their performance.

And just because they are in a band I don't assume they are immune to objectifying women, I simply doubt it was there intent. As far as them being an "indie" band – HA! I'm pretty sure most indie bands can't afford such elaborate productions. They haven't been indie in a looong time.

Oh wow, listen to Adrian and Libby on here. So what, some girls got on stage and ran around naked? Why don't you write to Wayne and tell him to slap some burqas on them If they wish to run around on stage. No one forced them on stage, they aren't abusing these women. they WANTED to do it. Wayne and the Lips have ALWAYS Been about putting on a good show, a creative and crazy show. If they offended you, then good. thats the way rock used to be. Non-pc. in your face. crazy and unpredictable, and the Lips represent that.

I encourage us all to test this matter to determine whether it is sexist, or ageist. I encourage my fellow middle-aged males to strip naked and dance onstage at Flaming Lips shows whenever possible. The hairier the better! They won't need the furry animal costumes anymore if this takes off. If we're prevented from dancing on stage, or Altamonted with pool cues, we'll know there's some discrimination going on. Feel good about your body!

wonderful photos!

i have to point out that i keep reading people's accounts of the lips set and they keel alluding to young girls running out of the audience and onto the stage and stripping down at the beck and call of wayne. i didn't get that impression at all. it was clearly something set up ahead of time and planned way in advance, not some random girls out of the audience. that's all.

anyway, the lips were the perfect close to a wonderful weekend
