Tay Zonday/Dan Deacon/Girl Talk @ First Ave, Minneapolis 10/9/07

Difficult to do anything aside from IM and email about here on what feels like Christmas morning, and it makes us feel dirty to post anything when all we're thinking is In Rainbows ... but we've gotta start the non-Radiohead stuff somewhere ... and what more poetic place to start than right here: From the timelessness of Thom to the internet pan-flash of Tay. As you'll remember, Gregg Gillis wasn't sure whose idea it was, but both he and the good Deacon signed off on allowing Zonday to open their show at First Ave. in Minneapolis. That was last night. So while we were at Sunset Rubdown and then waiting for W.A.S.T.E. to hit our inbox, we sent Stereogum reader Raquel Guzman to take a couple of shots...

Right. You know the party-starting exploits of Girl Talk and Dan, so let's just move into the Zonday. The Star Tribune was impressed...

I actually enjoyed the Chocolate Reign more than the rest of the crowd seemed to, but just as a one-time-only, curiosity kind of deal. Seeing him perform was almost like seeing a TV character come to life, it was just hard to think of him as a real guy. But he proved to be very real in the end, effortlessly showing every quirk he does on YouTube. For whatever reason, I laughed hardest during “Internet Dream” when emphatically sang/mooed, “I love my mom and dad.” I also liked his frozen arm gesture that ended every song.
But you can just judge for yourself, via this reader submitted vid...

Thanks to Chris for sending this in. And yes, we know, it's tough to move on from In Rainbows ... but at least we waited 'til there were 200 comments, right? Keep on going though -- we'll have a 'best-of' your premature evaluations later.

thank goodness dan deacon signed off we wouldn't want a flash in the pan's gimmic to cross stage with a timeless act like that.

And I thought the original video was the most undeniable thing on the internet...priceless moves.

Also, did you know the lyrics can be replaced with ANYTHING and they still make sense and fit perfectly?

here's a riddle: what are three things that will be completely forgotten about by this time next year?

I was at this show and it was fucking painful to watch. I went in a huge Dan Deacon fan (which I admit may make me slightly retarded), excited for Girl Talk, and at least ready to enjoy the novelty of Tay Zonday. Zonday was fucking excruciating. After Deacon ended his set early because some assholes were throwing fucking water on his equipment, Tay proceeded to irritate nearly everyone in the house. Let this stand as a warning to all who think they'd enjoy a novelty come to life -it was embarrassing to watch. Somehow, it retro-actively ruined Deacon's set for me (which I enjoyed at the time) to the point that I left 10 minutes into Girl Talk's set because I just couldn't stand any more internet novelties come to life.

I agree with Charlie

Tay wasn't getting any love from the audience. This was a late late show and by the time Tay came on, everyone was antsy, irritated, and waiting impatiently for Girl Talk's set to start. You wanna talk about a show that was overhyped? :(

i too was at the show and it was PAINFUL. i thought dan deacon was painful but tay zonday.....AWFUL to these ears. SO MANY people left early from this show due to the fact they oversold by around 300 people, and the openers were so fucking bad. deacon and zonday - what a pair of douches.

I was too drunk to feel the pain others have described, but I do remember looking up at Tay, and just as the Strib said, it "was almost like seeing a TV character come to life." Can't say that I was upset afterward, it just made the whole experience feel that much more surreal. All of the prior and subsequent dance-floor fuckery rendered it a forgettable detail. Minus getting bounced off stage by a surly goon during Girl Talk, the show was ill as fuck.

Every time you illegally download a song, God creates another Tay Zonday.
