Stereogum's FM3 Buddha Machine Giveaway

When Stereogum got our Buddha Machine a few months ago, we didn't quite know what to make of it. The iPod-looking device, brainchild of electronica artists FM3, has got a volume control, headphone jack, and a switch that allows you to choose between nine ambient loops (available as MP3s on FM3's site). The packaging, and even the batteries, are in Chinese, so we were compelled to just turn it on and play with it. Which is the point. Is it art? A toy? A bizarre novelty for sure. But we never predicted how this drone box would take off.

Pitchfork was so enamored it rated Buddha Machine an 8.2! And now comes word that Amoeba is consistently selling out of the curiosity, along with rumors that Urban Outfitters has their eyes on distributing it. Brian Eno bought eight. There are even official t-shirts.

Stereogum's teamed up with the exclusive Buddha Machine retailer Forced Exposure to give away five of these babies. They come in multiple colors, so we can't tell you which you'll get if you win, but if this zen gizmo does what it's supposed to after you turn it on, your eyes will be closed anyway.

Enter here. Contest is over.

I hate to just plug a site here but i think stereogum readers can benifit from this https://www.burnlounge.com/official is a website much like itunes but features independant artists. Itunes has an agreement with only major labels and their affiliates, but burnlounge.com/official welcomes any artist. I thought you might enjoy being able to download independant artists at a price of $9.99. Also movies and ringtones will be included on the site soon. Enjoy

Just when I was thinking now's the time to buy one! It's like you read my mind! But I'll hold off until the contest ends. . . and if I don't win, I'll pay up.

So I'm still not exactly sure what this pumps out? Calming sounds like those ambient tapes you buy to do Yoga with, or is it some techno beats or something completely different? Either way I entered, maybe I'll win something for once.

Yes, I want to win the buddha box, please.

Re: the burnlounge spam - fuck that shit, man. If you want something that is REALLY different than iTunes and truly independent-oriented look at emusic.

I've mixed the Buddha Machine into my own live/improv ambient-ish music. An example can be found in this podcast: http://www.markrushton.com/music/podcast.htm#podcast11

My 5 year old daughter loves it so much that she took it to pre-school this week for Show And Tell. Every kid wanted one.

I bought one of these a few months ago based off of the mad hype going around.

It's pretty cool I guess, but it's just a cheap little box looping ambient sound. I like ambient like the next guy, but I didn't really see what all they madness was about.

The thing is only $23 bucks!? Real nice prize, I think I'll buy one (or four) with my Federal Gas Rebate Check.

Anyone know what kind of power adapter you can use with these things?

takes a standard 4.5v or even 3v thing. same size as the ones for a discman or most small audio devices... i use one that can move between 3v and 4.5v to make the loops go faster or slower...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt
