The 'Gum Drop Volume XVIII: Hear New Hello, Blue Roses, Win Lots Of Bowie

As you may remember, Destroyer dude, Swan Laker, and the sexiest New Pornographer this side of Neko Case, Dan Bejar teams up with girlfriend, the visual artist Sydney Vermont, to create the pastoral-rock duo Hello, Blue Roses. The twosome's full-length debut The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty is out 1/22 on Locust, but this week we 'Gum Dropped that platter's "Sunny Skies," a dose of the bright stuff amid the early January moon. You can hear it while reading Vermont's thoughts on the track, along with how she and Dan spent their Winter Solstice, here. Also, for those paying attention, you may remember that a few 'Gum Drops ago, we debuted "Policy Merchant 2," a song from the Frog Eyes side of the Absolutely Kosher split with Hello, Blue Roses (which Carey discusses in his Q&A). Either way, you can listen to it again over here.

On top of the fruits of Bejar and Vermont's new work, we thought it made sense to welcome in the New Year with a box set collecting the five most recent studio albums (plus over 60 bonus tracks) by perennially ageless David Bowie. (Father Time skips his place ever year, no?) More details after the jump.

Since debuting in '67, Bowie hasn't slowed down. There are the Arcade Fire hoedowns, Sponge Bob cameos and slick unearthed mugshots, but his recorded output's remained just as active: Spanning 1995-2004, The David Bowie Box includes Outside, Earthling, 'hours...', and Reality. The albums appear as expanded two-disc sets wrapped in a vinyl replica digpak. Each bonus disc includes mixes, remixes, edits, alternate takes, outtakes, and other rarities. You can check out the tracklist over at the Legacy Recordings site. You can enter to win here. This is what it looks like all packed up. Minus the red velvet-y fabric, of course.

CONTEST ENDS 1/16/08 AT 12PM EST.

Band To Watch: Hospital Ships

As we pass saturation point for press coverage of Montreal, Portland, Brooklyn and et cetera, it seems Lawrence, Kansas is poised for its coming turn in the music media trend piece carousel. At least from what we're hearing; this marks...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
