Win Marie Antoinette's Guitar

Despite mixed reaction to Kevin Shields's treatment of Bow Wow Wow, most of you agree that Sofia Coppola's latest soundtrack lineup is up to snuff. All reports of the film say that, despite being shut out of that Top 40 list, Sofia continues to score her scenes with the perfectly-placed hipster tune. Coppola's rendering of Antoinette as a Paris Hilton-type party girl may have been a little too simplified for the French audiences at Cannes, but securing Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, and an awesome film score is sure to get the kids in the seats. Who goes to the movies to learn, anyway? But for the history students out there, here's a little known fact: Marie Antoinette played an Epiphone!

And of course, we're giving it away. There will be ONE grand prize, but we'll have THREE runners-up, each receiving a copy of the soundtrack (on CD), a poster, nail polish, and a quill (ink well not included). Winners of the Marie Antoinette Guitar Giveaway will be chosen at random on Monday 10/23 at 6PM EST. To enter, tell us the first song you'll learn to play on Marie's guit; if you already play, tell us your favorite song to rip to. Be honest, but know that if it's a lame song, we'll all laugh and point. Good luck!

Marie Antoinette is in theaters 10/20.

UPDATE: This guitar's now been autographed by the MA stars. Click for details.

i'd learn how to play Silverio's 'yepa yepa yepa', and just for that added bit of authenticity, i'd get my hair in a long flowing mullet, grow a moustache, dress in a shiny silver suit with pink shirt and generally act like a nutter...

"Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies. I have a hunch that if one were to play that riff while walking through the streets, he would be like the Pied Piper, with a throng of nerdy, bespeckled white girls following him wherever he went.

That, or rats.

I really hope it's not rats. I need a girlfriend.

"Semi-Charmed Life" is post-grunge band Third Eye Blind's first single off their self-titled debut album, released in 1997. It was a major hit of the 90s reaching number four in the U.S., and the Top 40 in the UK. Further, it has had a pervasive cultural impact, getting featured on a wide variety of movie soundtracks. It is almost instantly recognized by the earlier members of Generation Y.

Beneath a catchy upbeat melody, the song contains dark lyrics about a drug user's descent into crystal meth addiction and his sexual activities. However, the single still became a major hit. There may have been a public effort to disguise the meaning of the song, as the words "crystal meth" are frequently censored on radio stations, or "blurred" out of recognition.

The lyrics "I want something else" in the chorus, were originally "I want nothing else", but this was changed at the last minute. When the band was asked why, they avoided answering. It is speculated that the replacement of "nothing" with "something" in this instance would make it seem as though the subject of the song wanted to stop using drugs, as opposed to "wanting nothing else" other than drugs.

all I have is an acoustic, so I do a lot of singer-songwriter strumming. But I feel like I'd have to learn the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" riff to truly do justice to an electric. Either that, or the Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge."

I would learn Air Supply's "Making Love Out Nothing At All," buy a Kermit puppet and a cheap suit, and then shave my head.

Finally, I'd tape myself singing back-and-forth verses of Australian super-ballad to the afore-mentioned Muppet, only to post the entire thing on youtube.com...

Oh wait? That's already been done? Pff... Well, that's still what I'd do. Except MY video would be even steamier. And, of course, I'd have a much cooler guitar.

Is there even a question? I'd totally learn "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot, then I'd hire someone to walk behind me and toll a ship's bell whenever (and wherever) I played it.

And I'd definitely crazy it up so that those sailors were drowning in massively fuzzy overdrive and killer hott lixx.

But that's just me...

Like many, Ca plane pour moi by Plastic Bertrand leapt to mind immediately, but I think a more honorable and appropriate choice would be Allez les filles ! by Les Thugs, but since this is Stereogum, I'm guessing the "right" answer is Pinback's "Versailles". Unless you know who Malvina Reynolds is - and her 1972 song "let them eat cake".

i'm going to answer honestly and say i'd play "twinkle twinkle little star." i haven't "ripped" much since the my daughter was born--now 2, she's taken a liking to eveybody's favorite lullaby and any six-string that makes it into my hands must perform the tune ad nauseum. oh, and she really wants me to have an sg, so unless you want to make a baby cry...

You have to ask yourself, what would Louis XVI (if played by Jason Schwartzman) serenade Marie Antoinette (if played by Kirsten Dunst) with.

The answer is obviously, "Fever Dog" by Stillwater.

Battle Without Honor or Humanity - 布袋寅泰 (Kill Bill Soundtrack)

I'd need my horn section, though. Who here knows how to play trumpet or some sax?

Something spare and minimal -- like the Slits' cover of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" or some Spoon song. Because I'm never gonna be good enough to play shoegazer classix! Maybe I just need some awesome effects pedals as part of the deal.

Marie Antoinette once heard a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart perform at the legendary Hall of Mirrors. With that being said I would learn to play Falco's Rock Me Amadeus! (Marie would have wanted it that way.) Imagine that she could have had jam sessions with Amadeus! Move over Captain and Tennille and Belle and Sebastian. If that had happened, it would have changed music, as we know it today.

the first guitarist that comes in mind to me when i think of the SG is Tony Iommi.
Black Sabbath's Megalomania would be my first song on the guitar. A jem from the Sabotage album, it is very ditinctly Iommi. First it mellows you up and then an onslaughting classic rock riff as Ozzy sings "Feel it slipping away".
