Win Old And New Pussy Cats

Back in '74, John Lennon and Harry Nilsson went on a bender forever known as "the lost weekend," a stretch of months starring booze, drugs, and the bars of LA. To commemorate their debauchery, Harry and John set a mix of originals and covers to tape, with Harry singing and John on production. Nilsson blew out his voice during the sessions, and his ruptured cords led many to dismiss the effort; years on, it's gained in stature, and The Walkmen deem it a "band favorite."

And so Hamilton & Co. recorded an affectionate, song-for-song cover of the album, calling it the "great 'buddy' record of the seventies." Leithauser's boozy croon is a good fit for blown-out Nilsson, and the record is worth a listen for "Many Rivers To Cross" alone. Hear it for yourself at the Pussy Cats listening party.

"Pussy Cats" Starring The Walkmen comes with a 20-minute, psychadelic, making-of-the-record documentary and some pretty weird cover art. And dontcha know it, we have a copy to give away.

Here are our Pussy-giveaway winner's spoils:

  • The Walkmen - "Pussy Cats" Starring The Walkmen
  • Harry Nilsson / John Lennon - Original, out-of-print Pussy Cats
  • The Walkmen - A Hundred Miles Off
  • The Walkmen limited edition numbered silkscreened poster
  • And second place gets ... nothing! It's winner-take-all. To enter the Pussy Cats Giveaway, post a comment telling us what's attractive about the prize albums (or about Hamilton's caveman-in-furs getup). We'll randomly select a winner on Tuesday 10/31 at 6PM EST.

"Pussy Cats" Starring The Walkmen is out 10/24.

The prize albums are attractive because they show the blend between the modern and it's influence quite literally. I really want to see how The Walkmen, a band featured on The OC, can cover an album produced by a member of one of the most ubiquitous bands of all time. I think The Walkmen and John Lennon are both legit musicians even if their bands attached themselves to some dubious things like a fox show [okay, so it is my favorite show, go mock me] and lunch boxes.

Also, I have never won any online contests even though many pop up ads promise me free X-Box...I would like to win for the sake of winning and the fact that the prize would come from my favorite music blog and would be a better prize than a X-Box makes it perfect.

Widescreen is inherently attractive, whilst orange is so ugly as to reach otherwise unattainable attrative standards, as many women and George Michael know.
I tell you, the future will contain a new race of super-ugly/mega-attractive Orange humans who will no doubt roam the wild French planes.

Otherwise, caveman-in-furs is the new beardman-in-burrow (Banhart). 'Cause I know these things.

By the way, I don't want these prizes, I NEED them. My bones are scrambling together in my body, I need them so bad.

If the original Pussy Cats is, in fact listenable, then the prize album would slightly disprove the mightily scurrilous "Lives Of John Lennon", which made the album sound like a drunker Metal Machine Music.

The added bonus of the poster makes it extra attractive - not only will winning the contest score me the copies of Pussy Cats, but an added aesthetic advantage in my room for scoring with pussy cats. New medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene - the stuff that makes tomatoes red - may prevent cancer.

Omer Kucuk, M.D., oncologist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, has produced the first scientific evidence to indicate that a lycopene supplement containing tomato extract may protect against prostate cancer. The study is being presented today at the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Philadelphia.

In the study, Dr. Kucuk and colleagues followed 30 men with localized prostate cancer who were scheduled to undergo surgical removal of the prostate. For three weeks prior to surgery, study participants were randomly assigned to receive either a 15-milligram capsule of lycopene as a pure tomato extract, twice daily, or no intervention. Following removal of the prostates, the glands were analyzed to determine whether there were any differences between the two groups studied.

The investigators found that the group treated with lycopene supplements had smaller tumors, the cancer was more frequently confined to the prostate, meaning the cancer did not spread to surrounding tissue and organs. Levels of serum PSA (prostate specific antigen, a common marker used to detect prostate cancer) actually declined during the 3-week span that participants took the lycopene supplement. In addition, the tumors in participants who consumed lycopene showed signs of regression and decreased malignancy.

Yay, The Walkmen (one of the few bands I've seen live that doesn't sound like crap compared to their real cds?), what more could a girl ask for? Together, this is just an all out musical orgasm. I love that the Walkmen covered not only a song but the whole album itself. I’ve heard of this album but have never given it a listen before, but now I’m dying to. John Lennon is my hero and is a true musical genius. What’s up with the covers? I'm in love with both of them. To me it looks like the original album’s cover is two kids playing house: hubby at the table and wifey holding a ... comb (I hope she’s brushing out his hair with that comb and not getting ready to stab out his ear or something). While The Walkmen’s cover looks like today’s dysfunctional family: The Caveman daddy, the ugly haired wife, the fruity son, the ape son, and the too depressed to get dressed emo child. Ha, gotta love it.

What's attractive? Remakes of remakes are both a commentary and byproduct of our post-modern society. This album is a tribute to the dying notion of an album. I love the Walkemen so much that I ordered Bows & Arrow from Amazon and had it delivered to me in Madagascar (yes, the island off the southeast coast of Africa). Pick me! Pick me!

    Music is my first love.................................................................................................................................

Nilsson -and indeed everyone else in my book-owe it all to Dylan. Who was it that said 'Elvis freed your body but Dylan freed your mind '. Dylan paved the way for the Rolling stones -who had just done covers, he paved the way for the Beatles-who would never have got past the sickly-sweet-commercial 'She loves you'.Dylan paved the way for Lennon and Nilsson with the more country inspired 'John Wesley Harding' and 'Nashville Skyline' albums-remember the heavily suggestive 'Lay Lady Lay...' His influence screams out in the music by Johnathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, even Fad Gadget, and of course, The Walkmen.
Besides, who could forget such soul searching lyrics as-'everybody must get stoned'-no seriously, enjoy my personal faves-

Well, I've been to London and I've been to gay Paree
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of a world full of lies
I ain't looking for nothing in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden seems more than I can bear
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm moving, but I'm standing still
Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb
I can't even remember what it was
I came here to get away from
Don't even hear a murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there.

    Keep a clean nose
    Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows.

.............................................and it will be my last.
    LOVE YR WORK.

P.S. For whomever wishes to know,I am a young London lady that likes tea and cats.

The Nilsson record is attractive because John could have saved the vocals at any time, but he chose not to. That took a tremendous amount of humility.

    2-they are potentially free.
