Win Tickets To See Clap Your Hands Say Yeah On NYE!

Navigating NYC during the last hours of the year is always a nightmare, but this year we've got just the fix: Go see Clap Your Hands' 12/31 show at Hammerstein Ballroom! Stereogum's proud to co-present the show with Alec and the guys (and Bob Mould's opening!); the new stuff won't leave our heads, and CYHSY's evolving into a bona fide beast on stage. Plus, it's a warm place to be with good music, good tunes, and real people (not to get all Almost Famous on ya). And not only are we psyched that we now have New Year's plans, but we're inviting ten of you to join us! It's the stuff indie-rock dreams are made of.

So we have five pairs of tickets to giveaway, and we're gonna do it like always; to enter the contest, post a comment telling us (1) how you discovered the Clap (we blogged them before PFork, of course, but it's cool if that's where you found 'em) and (2) naming your favorite tune. We'll pick five winners at random on Wednesday 12/27 at 6PM EST, and the ten of you will have a solid story for the back-to-work NYE watercooler conversation. Here's to ringing in the Oh-Seven! Good luck.

Not to nitpick, but I think you should mention the Bob Mould Band is opening up.

I first discovered CYHSY when one of my friends made a mix with "Over and Over Again" on it. I was hooked after two spins, and it's still my favorite track

a friend picked me up in her car, put on the clap your hands album and i thought it was the best/worst thing i had ever heard. that's why i love them. how can something be so awful and amazing at once?

i'm stuck in a holiday inn in denver, co, trying to get back to kansas city. lucky for me a blizzard suspended all air traffic, so you can find me at the hotel bar or in my room checking stereogum and digg every 10 seconds.
anyway, i think i first heard of clap your hands on pitchfork. i checked out their website, downloaded everything i could find and bought their cd. favorite song has to be yellow country teeth. that keyboard in the beginning is just too good.

I first heard of CYHSY through Stereogum. I had gotten the cd, and grown to really like it, but I didn't know I loved CYHSY until Coachella 06' when they played The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth. A euphoric feel swept across the audience for that song, as everyone sang along with what they thought Alec was singing. Like Maps is the genre defining love song, I think The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth is the genre defining leaving home song.

one of my co-workers played it in the office, then another co-worker complained about his voice.. unfortunately, i didn't speak up in support of the band.. i'm relatively new to the job, don't need to rock the boat just yet.. but soon.. soon.

I'm pretty sure it was PFork's name checking review that got me intrigued. When I first heard Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood it reminded me of the first time I met my crazy drummer. He kept calling everyone young blood and it was funny. So I guess that's my favorite tune.

How you can you read a line like this from Pitchfork and not run out and buy the CD?

A band that mashes together Talking Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel while also stopping in to visit the shimmering, wafting ambiance of Yo La Tengo, the harmonic trickery of Modest Mouse, and the chorused guitarwork of pre-Loveless My Bloody Valentine? What website do you think this is? We are fucking there.

And that's exactly what I did ordered the CD immediately from Insound. My favorite song was originally "Upon this Tidal Wave of Young Blood", then it was "In this Home on Ice", but now over a year later, its "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth".

My friend Greggles who lives in Melbourne sent me the album and said it was good stuff. Funny because I live in New York and probably should have known about this before my Australian friend did. And but so, I liked the album immediately, though felt that it was a bit on the talking heads rip off side of things for a while before the tunes really began to take hold of me. yellow country teeth is obvious, but also the best tune on that disc, i think.

i first heard cyhsy from a friend. i bought the cd and listened to it non-stop on a spring trip to nyc. every day we walked around the city i had cyhsy in my head or playing on my ipod. after that trip i couldn't listen to cyhsy without thinking of nyc. it was so great, the association. seriously, i listen to their cd and it makes me want to pack my bags and move to brooklyn or something. they've become the quintessential "nyc" music, in my mind. as it turns out, i am going to nyc for new years. its quite the coincidence, although when my friend pitched me the idea of going to new york for new year's, i DID have the new CYHSY songs playing and I thought it was some sort of divine intervention. thats my story.

Living in London last fall, it seemed the buzz was all about North American crossovers, like Wolf Parade and We are Scientists, but when my friend Marlow put on the slow-mo chain saw vibration that is the opening to "The Skin..." i found the beat that would carry me to class across clouded Islington. Seeing them at Coachella and Bonnaroo has been a pleasure. Too bad that while the Byrne comes through full force live, those pesky bent guitar notes are harder to come by.

Favorite song, hence, is the CD Maxi-single #1 TRL hit "The Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth"

1st heard 'em from a cd my friend gave me.

friend: "here, spin this"
me: "who is it?"
friend: "clap your hands say yeah"
me: *claps hands* says "yeah"
friend: "no, srsly, thats the name"
me: "ok" *plays cd. twice. buys cd that night.

(have seen them thrice now. twice in philly, once in nyc, both hometowns)

fav song - upon this tidal wave of young blood.

As a puppeteer, its important that I remain aggressive in the constant search for new and unique artistic mediums. Avant-garde in nature, its hard to find just the perfect music to go alongside my puppet shows. When I first heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I was visiting a new friend, a magician named Fenton. I was instantly drawn to them, they've become a wonderful source of inspiration. These tickets would kick ass... feeding my insatiable lust for CYHSY.

I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in 1997, when I had a bad acid trip and went way indie clairvoyant for about 6 minutes. I knew they were coming, and anticipated their first album. When it came out, I listened to it a lot while I made out with my girlfriend, and also while I was hanging out with my buddies. My favorite song is The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth, both because that's what I heard in '97 when I was tripping, and also because its a fucking rad song.

I found them surfing the internet one day. I read a review and really dug the name and had to listen. It turns out I had listened to them a few nights ealier at a friends out. I was glad to find out who they were. I think my favorite is "Heavy Metal" or "In This Home On Ice", both very good and catchy. It's hard to decide. I like all their songs. CYHSY really caught me most with the tambourine, my favorite instrument. They rock it!

I heard of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah when I was out with my brother. He bought the cd, and played it on the way home. It's been love ever since. I'd appreciate the tickets, considering Clap Your Hands Say Yeah came to Toronto and I was insanely happy I could go.. only to find out that it was 19+. I later spent the night crying.

And my favourite song.... would have to be: Is This Love?

I was trying to pick some music for a really important, dramatic scene in my first indie film, so i was scowering the globe to find something that matched. "lost and found" by clap your hands, was, and is that song; it meshed perfectly, and gave the mood of the scene just that extra little something to make it my favorite that i've ever shot and worked with. I think the actual discovery was through i-pod roulette on a drive from california to new york, my friend had "lost and found" downloaded from the website, and after hearing it I had to have the album.

Favorite song: details of the war... great emotio.

well i discovered clap your hands say yeah whennnn my mom was reading an article in some newspaper or magazine about them or that had something about them in it.

and it said they went to connecticut college, and she went there, so she read it.

and she asked me if i knew them and i had heard of them but had never really listened to them before simply because i never got to it.

so then i went out and bought the album and i fell in love and thats in the end.

favorite song = is this love. chorus bit is freaking genius.

I discovered CYHSY on one of my many searches for new inspiring sounds in '05. Saw them linked with The National, and Dr. Dog (two other very brilliant bands) gave em a listen, and fell head over heals...full on, crimson n' clover, over and over, I fall everytime I hear them. Still have never seen them, and I've been aching for the Clap for a long while. (Ohh Ho Ho)

My favorite tune? It's between Heavy Metal, and Clap Your Hands!. Heavy Metal is a tune that perks you up, no matter how trivial things may be. Plus, you can't deny the urge to shimmy n shake when it strikes on.
Clap Your Hands!, well, Im a sucker for hand claps in any song. Hand claps, and organs, and those lyrics with infinite meanings, or obvious ones.

Ok, I've made up my mind, it's Clap Your Hands! That song is so stunning, and all round my taste.

I first heard CYHSY on KEXP - I stream the station from work here in Dallas since our local stations are very saturated with really bad music - thank you Clear Channel! So after I heard CYHSY I immediately went to iTunes and bought their entire library. Their sound is so unique I immediately fell in musical love! They have serenaded me through many days.

To pick just one favorite song is like trying to choose a favorite between peanut butter and jelly! I guess if I have to name just one it is "In This Home on Ice". Oh and peanut butter for the other one.

1st it was gimme some salt, then it was the skin of my yellow country teeth, after that it was Tidal wave of young blood. I proceeded to go through every song on the album being my favorite, and I've now landed on This home on ice.

My fat friend Wallace Brown turned me on to them. It took a while after I bought the album to really have time to listen to it. But I was really struck by their enerry and unique sound. It reminded me of early Talking Heads. That's what really got me hooked.

gimme some tickets. I just moved to New York and have no plans for New Year's eve.

sorry about the "fat" comment wallace. but you are a pretty big guy. more to love, I suppose.

first...I watch The Office religiously and loooove Jim Halpert. Who doesn't, right? I was on iTunes and I found a celebrity playlist by Jim Halpert (some actors from the show had picked songs as their characters...) and "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away" was on his list. I listened endlessly (which I guess means I'm listening at this very moment) and then bought the entire album and second...my favorite song is..."Is This Love?"

I don't remember the first time I heard CYHSY and I don't really care. I know you all are trying to win free tickets, but am I the only one that thinks this band is pretty crummy? I don't see anything interesting about taking the Talking Heads and sprinkling a little indie rock this-and-that on top. And the singer has one of the most irritating voices I've ever heard and I tend to like unusual, idiosyncratic singers. I saw a clip of the band on Conan courtesy of this blog, and it was so insanely bad, it actually pissed me off. Maybe they're better now, but this band is a product of hype and circumstance and does not make interesting music to back it all up.

My friend who lives in Brooklyn first told me about CYHSY after his friend saw them at Pianos. Once, when I was at my Brooklyn friend's house, he walked me over to the big "CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH" graffiti on the now-famous warehouse. Actually, we were in Virgin Megastore in Times Square a month later, and "This Home On Ice" started to play on the speaker system, which was inexplicable and awesome. We stayed for the whole song, if I remember correctly.

My personal favorite song by CHYSY by far is "The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth". The distorted melody and very fantastic drums intro is too much for me. When I first heard got the record, I must have listened to the intro for that song 30 times or so. I love those drums.

A year ago I had a friend buy my girlfriend(at the time) a Clap shirt at Langerado since we both couldn't make it to the festival. I figured it was another girl band considering that was what most of her music was. I hadn't heard CYHSY until shuffling through my current girlfriends Ipod and being intrigued this time around to actually hear the band. Needless to say my next cd purchace was CYHSY. It's found a permanent place in my car's cd visor.

My favorite song is Over and Over Again(Lost and Found). It reminds me of my youth listening to punk rock and the constant speak of rebellion that chattered away and faded with time... it makes me nostalgic for what we felt back then.

1st guy (Steve) they did mention Bob Mould is opening...

I heard about CYHSY from Bob Brasky. He picked me up in his ice cream truck covered in human skulls and had it playing on a record player he'd rigged up in the back. I tried to tell him John Lennon did it first, but he wouldn't hear it. He just kept yelling gibberish about the Plastic Ono Band being instrumental in the first moon landing.

Anyways, after about two liters of scotch, he showed me his inner ear and I'll be darned if there wasn't a whole colony of little people living in there. Seems they were building a new machine that washed your clothes for you! I've never heard of such a thing...

So I decided it'd be best to go home, and when I got home I downloaded the whole album from www.whitehouse.com and gosh, I sure do like that song "Satan Said Dance".

I actually found their first CD on a sidewalk in north philly. It was all scratched up and the only songs that would play were 'The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth' and 'Clap Your Hands!'. I fell in love with the sound and the next night they were playing on Conan O'Brien.

Favourite songs would be 'The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth' and 'Is This Love'.

so when my bi-coastal musical worlds collided, i had friends recommending clap your hands say yeah from all directions. i was first exposed to them when i was living with beautiful gay men in harlem this summer. CYHSY have appeared on every mix cd i've made since (particularly "over and over again (lost and found))

I heard CYHSY for the first time on KEXP in the early summer of '05, they played "Let The Cool Goddess Melt Away", I immediately ran out to buy the album; this was my summer playlist. It's really hard for me to choose just one song, but if I really had to, I would say that "By The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth" is my favorite.

2.) "The Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth" makes me want to clap my hands and say...yeahhh!

I was sitting around watching Road Rules on MTV with no sound on because I was listening to Z100...New York's #1 hits station and my only source for music. As I was just about to turn everything off and go check out the new Johnny Knoxville movie, this song came on. It was Matchbox 20 so I couldn't turn it off. But then another song came on and it was the Clap Hand Yeahs. They totally rocked. That song Over Again, Over Again is so hot. Ever since then I've wanted to see them live with my friends Amber, Brittany, Troy, and "Animal" (he's the crazy one...teehee, LOL)

They were namechecked somewhere in a music forum I read, and I immediately thought "That is the stupidest band name I've ever heard, I wish these guys were my best friends." I listened, fell in love, realized they had played my town literally ONE WEEK BEFORE I heard of them, and wept without consolation for months. My favorite song is Over and Over Again because "You look like David Bowie/But you've nothing new to show me" describes too many skinny music snobs who need to eat something and enjoy fun music again.

Walking past the Opera house heading home one night there was yet again a lengthy lineup to get in. Not scattered with the usual riffraff I felt compelled to inquire as to who the act of the eve was. Cutting a short story shorter, not a day over the following months went without listening to CYHSY. Planned a road trip to see them in central park in NY, work botched that for me but I made it to The Osheaga fest in Montreal and what a great great time. Fave tune? All really. Cool Goddess? Lost and found? I'm sweaty and frazzled just thinking about it. I'm Diggin Satan said dance. Who's with me? Happy Holidays? Indeed. Good luck all!

Well, I was driving around and my brother, Lincoln, he says "Liv, do you like Clap Your Hands?" "I can't clap my fucking hands, I'm driving." "Clap Your Hands SAY YEAH. The band. God, you suck."

That's how I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Do you guys even realize how long it took me to figure out what the fuck everyone was talking about in these comments?? "CYHSY" I thought they were all talking about a friggen news station.

I enjoy the tune Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood,
the ending is pretty epic. It also annoys the shit out of my 60 year old father. "What the fuck is this? God your generation doesn't know ANYTHING about music. When I come home from Vietnam, Janis Joplin was playing on the radio, MAN, that was some music....Jesus."

Let's get it out of the way: yes, first heard about them on Pitchfork. I did resist the hype for a while, but ineveitably succumbed and took to it rather smoothly.
I love how "In This Home on Ice" washes over you, I find it strangely comforting and a just plain gorgeous song. But, as a transplant to New York this autumn, clearly, I have to go with "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth." It always energizes and excites, and PERFECTLY reminds me why I wanted to come and drown in this big, scary, brimming-with-life city in the first place: "this boy could use a little sting"

Yellow Country Teeth was on rotaion of a fav local DJ and it quickly divided the 'rockers' from the 'whata I do with this?'. Each week he played it more and more people were converted. It was such amazing good fun to hear so loud on a crowded dance floor; it will always have a spot on my playlist. So of course I put that track on a mix CD I made for my friend Fern who currently listens to Clap Your Hands Say Yah daily and will be joining me in New Years when I win! Her favorite is track 12-Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood - and of course I agree;)

Song - Well, "the skin of my yellow country teeth" is probably the most popular but it is their best song. The Peter Hook-esque bass line is an excellent touch.

first...I watch The Office religiously and loooove Jim Halpert.

Firstly, I clap twice after every time I say the band’s name. I first heard about the band from a friend in summer 2005. He was a film student and also a bassist in a local band. I was producing his movie. He played me the eponymous album on a long trek in a van stocked chock-full with film equipment. I immediately thought I’d give them a go, based on name alone. It grew on me. At first blush I had trouble getting past the carnival-barker whine of Mr. Ounsworth. By the time I had bought the album and it became my soundtrack as I biked up and down Manhattan that fall, well, the rest is history. And may God bless Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!

The one-two punch of “Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away” and “Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)” makes me nostalgic for the sandboxes and tilt-a-whirls and the things that go ping and the things that go pong in playgrounds of yore. I cannot bike up the hills of New York without the fun -- the la-la-la-pop smiles and winsome beams -- of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! But, my favorite, “In This Home on Ice,” mind you, always leaves a lump in my throat.

I heard about them through my local record store here in Philadelphia, which has since closed: Spaceboy. It was playing in the store while I was there shopping for something else. I love the first album, but I'm really into the new songs, so my current favorite is Underwater (You and Me).

I heard about CYHSY through Maryland's WTMD radio 89.7, I believe the song was Over & Over Again (Lost & Found).

My favorite song is Country Yellow Teeth because it reminds me of my good ol' friends back home in Oklahoma....
Next best is Over & Over Again (Lost & Found), especially the shoutout to David Bowe.
Hope to see you Dec 31!

I found out about them last year. My roommate and I were working in our room and our neighbor next door was blasting Clap Your Hands. It sounded like gibberish, but she played it on repeat so much we started to sing along (or mumble along since the word were unintelligible). Now, we join her in mumble karaoke song bursts and she's given both of us copies. I can't wait for their new cd to come out!

Stereogum's site is not working. So I'm going to save my submission here and copy and paste it later. Thanks, I love you. I heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for the first time on the Paste Magazine Sampler. Of course when I went to buy the cd in the local record store, the guy asked me what I was looking for and I said, "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah", he clapped his hands and said, "Yeah!" My favorite song is "Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood". I like to bounce around to it, and it's a great way to end the work day! PeaCE!

1. I learned about Clap Your Hands from browsing a few music forums in the summer of 05 (Specifically, Something Awful's NMD) and they were being heralded as the next big thing in the indie world. I'm not sure what I thought about that, but I checked them out and I liked what I heard.

2. My favorite song is Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away. I love Skin of My Yellow Country teeth as well, but Goddess just takes the cake because it's an amazing starter to a great album.

I really hate to admit this, but I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah through the vortex that is myspace. I clicked through the different friends of multiple bands I like before finding CYHSY and getting blown away. I like all of their songs, but always seem to end up on The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth.

So you should pick me for the following reasons:
1. I'm a big fan
2. I am good company in polite and impolite company alike.
3. I live in Florida and good bands (almost) ALWAYS skip Florida.
4. I desperately need a reason to make it to NYC
5. I am only going to post this once in the name of fairness and pray my little heart out that you pick me!

Thanks!

Towards the end of summer "04 I was putting off going out side to mow the grass, and instead was messing around with this the new invention called The Information Superhighway (look into it, pretty neat).
So I was at some music sites and ran across a site called stereogum and saw a link to a band's website, that band was a little rock group called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Although before I went to their site I noticed how helpful and neatly organized stereogum's website was (shameless attempt to kiss ass).
I proceeded forward to CYHSY's website and played the songs you could from their site (at the time it was "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" and "Over and Over Again (Lost and Found). I instantly thought both songs rocked and downloaded the ones I could, all 2.
At that point I was nice and happy and ready for my mowing extravaganza, and I must say is the best mowing experience I have ever had. Due largely to the fact I listened to only two songs from CYHSY the entire time as I was mowing and loved every second of it.
And to answer which was my favorite at the time is not an easy task, although since you did ask the question I will have to go with "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth". Again, not an easy call though at the time I would have to say that it was my favorite....of the two.
Soon after I purchased the entire album and have had some more pretty great mowing sessions. Although nothing will top the first time. Word.

1) I saw CYHSY open for Ambulance Ltd at Northsix in April of 2005. Besides listening to the recordings on their website earlier that day, I entered the show tabula rasa. I ended up having a cigarette with Alec and talking about their cover of my favorite Dylan song and how cool it was that the song title was a math equation ("Love Minus Zero/No Limit").

2) "Details of the War"

My dog just died in my arms shortly after my girl broke up with me because I'm unemployed and have severe Trichet's Syndrom (from my feet to my neck). I walked up to the top floor of my building to jump and like a mist that rolls in upon a cool Scottish loch, I heard Tidal Wave splash into my ears accompanied by a tall beautiful Polish girl named Ewa who took my virginity right then and there. I first heard them when my friend played the cd for me, telling me it reminded him of Bob Dylan. It didn't sound EXACTLY like Bob Dylan, but I thoght that was good because if it really had, then there's nothing gained really, is there? Anyway, I dug the cd for a while and then lost it and then stole it AGAIN from my college radio station and played it three times in a row while driving to Long Island to go to a funeral. That's when I said to myself, "Take notice, because these guys are the real deal." So my favorite song remains to be the wonderfully forgiving "In This Home On Ice", it's the best song on the cd.

I was goint to see The National perform at the Troubadour in LA a few years back, and CYHSY was one of the supporting acts. As it turned out, CYHSY ended up being the closing band that night. I was late as hell and lucky enough to be their for the entire CYHSY set. I first heard about the band because my girlfriend at the time has a friend from college who was living with a couple of the band members in Somerville, before they moved to New York (stay with me). An additional synchronicity is that her co-worker/friend/crush went to college with some of the band members. She brought this up because she was just a couple of degrees away from fame! Imagine(!)...anyways, I actually heard the music months later, when another friend of mine, who's a born music and film critic, raved about them and made me listen.

I think my favorite track is the opening one, "Clap Your Hands!". I could not stop chuckling thru the whole song the first time I heard it-it also makes me wanna swill beer, for some reason.

I first heard Clap when they opened for Blondie in '83. Of course, back then they were a speed/thrash metal band and were doing songs like "Respect Me, Respect My Fist" and "Bones On Fire" and "Lieutenant Blood Is Coming For Your Toddler Son".

It's so obvious they sold out and changed their sound. Listen to "In This Home On Ice" if yo don't believe me.

I found out Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on Amazon.com looking to buy Interpol's "Turn On the Bright Lights" CD. What caught my eye was the name...that fucking name was the only reason why I bought the album.

Not taking the band seriously I threw it in at a party just for laughs (this is in a small suburban town where all the kids these days listen to Panic at the Disco or Fall Out Boy) and before i knew it the first song "Clap Your Hands" was a hit drinking game. Every time someone did a shot i'd hear "CLAP YOUR HANDS!" and 13 teenagers who were never exposed to this type of music all bonded together in a slurred speech drinking expedition.

Finally the band stuck with everyone and the entire CD was played. The party's favorite and my favorite was "In This Home on Ice" and now every party isn't the same without the lyrics "and now that Im so sad and not quite right, i could dance all night"

CLAP YOU HANDS DRINKING GAME
material:
Beer
Vodka
Track 1 of CYHSY CD
bunch of closest friends

game:
sit in a circle and play the track "clap your hands" Everyone starts to chug their beer in the beginning of the song and when it changes to the part where it starts to go CLAP YOUR HANDS! you take a shot of the bottle and pass it to the right. By the end of the song everyone will have increased blood pressure and will not be able to operate any machinery

The first time it was on the radio France Inter (Bernard Lenoir) and the first set was at La Maison de Radio France.(I'm from Paris)
I find their music energetic, deep, and both optimistic/pessimistic (music/Lyrics) and their work brillant and clever (inspired and absolutely personnal at the same time)
I hope they are going to give us more :)
I'm very upset and frustrated because they are going to perform at La Cigale and it's yet complete.:((
Well if I should make a choice it would be Details of the war

Tickets for LA Cigale would satisfied me ; I'm not very exigent :)I asked yet to Mike Greek (I try everywhere)

My birthday is Dec 31 and I was looking for something to do cause I call my birthday "slash birthday" (as in new years/birthday). A friend recommended Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. So I clapped my hands... Then she told me its a band and I should come to the show.
I checked out some songs on myspace and realized I already know and love them, just didn't know the name. Now I realized that I actually have a whole album on the iPod I found last year, just that its always been unnamed. I've loved Over and Over (Lost and Found) for a year without knowing the song name or band name.

I walked into a bar in madison, wisconsin. after trudging through two rather mediocre openers, CYHSY came on. They looked just as mediocre as the other guys, but the music was something else entirely. I was about five rows back, leaning against a wooden pillar in the middle of this absolutely tiny venue, and I didn't move a muscle the entire show. They closed with an amazing cover of my favorite song ever, "Love Minus Zero/No Limit," and I was transfixed. On my way out I bought the album and scored a poster.

When I got outside I finally remembered why I had gone in there in the first place - looking for some girl. I don't know if she was in there or not, but I feel like I came out with something pretty great anyway.

Sadly, I'm lumped in with the hated masses who jumped on the wagon with pitchfork's "Best New Music" recommendation of the album in Summer '05. Strangely, it didn't grab me at first, but the album was a grower for me and by September had become one of my all-time most played on itunes.

Favorite song? Probably the version of "Heavy Metal" that closes the Black Session bootleg (tons of energy!)

It was my freshman year in college and my dorm neighbor and I were swapping music like crazy by making data CDs filled with MP3's or by using podUtil. I remember browsing through all of the music he gave me and finding some really good stuff that I couldn't stop listening to (Ted Leo - "Shake The Sheets", We Are Scientists - "With Love and Squalor"). CYHSY was also on his gift, but I couldn't bring myself to listen past track one at first. Then I worked at The Gap over winter break and I heard "Is This Love?" at least three times a day. I went back and discovered it was CYHSY. I gave the album a more in-depth look and shortly after I started giving it the play it deserves.

Favorite Track: "Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away"

Yes, Pitchfork.

My favorite track is "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth". The first time I met my girlfriend's mother she pointed out that her teeth looked yellow. That was the least traumatizing moment of that long day. We now both find comfort in that song.

I rode with a friend of mine somewhere. I didn't notice him put in the CD (in mid diatribe, no doubt) and when the first track began to play I asked, "are you taking me to the circus?"

confusion turned quickly to love... and then love to hunger.

The track-of-all-tracks has to be "Is This Love?"

Good luck to all!

Heard 'Yellow Country Teeth' coming out of a neighbor's window last year...couldn't find out the band for a month! Drove me crazy, finally found CYHSY and trekked to Coachella.

My favorite song has got to be 'Gimme Some Salt,' so sexy.

I first heard CYHSY at an "End of the World" party. "Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" came on and the entire apartment full of people started dancing and jumping. Someone started clapping their hands to the bass and chanting "yeah!, yeah!, yeah!"
It caught on. Imagine 30 people jumping, clapping their hands and saying yeah! It was great.

It's the only CD I keep in my stereo and at least once a week I get stressed out. I put it on and dance around my apartment. Sometimes my roommate joins me.

this was before i started checking music blogs religiously...but just kept on hearing about the funny name of this indie band. walked into Tower, saw it, bought it and loved it. (bought arcade fire at the same time...talk about a mindblowing musical experience).

one of my absolute favorite albums.
"the skin of my yellow county teeth" makes me grin every time it shuffles up on my ipod.

Definitely a dancing concert.

I first heard of this Clap Your Hands Say Yeah from one of my connected buddies - let's just say he works in "waste management". Soon enough, my guy pronounced them "sooooo over" and was on his way to wack Alec for upstaging The National. In the end, The National convinced my pal to let Alec off with a clever witticism by renaming his band "Clap Your Hands Say Meh" - an inspired jest that still gets belly-laughs on internet comment boards around the world.
I enjoy Satan Said Zaytoons. Also, their new unreleased single they've dedicated to me: "You're the Only Chump At Work Today."

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were the first band that we, The Gramercy Riffs, fought. I can't remember exactly what we were fighting about although I think it had something to do with our lead singer, Cyrus. Something about Clap Your Hands blowing him away...in a talent show way down in Coney Island. Anyway, the drama was broadcast over the radio airwaves, which in turn, caused beef between them and other bands like The Lizzies, The Furies, The Boppers, The Hi-Hats, and even The Turnbull AC's. Long story short, CYHSY weren't even involved. It was this jerk off Luther from some hack-ass Blink 182 cover band called The Rogues. We killed him.

"The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth" is a great song. And I've had too much fun wth these posts. Hope to see y'all at the show!

I discovered CYHSY at the Los Angeles Public Library, where the first CD is in the check-out section. I liked the cover art. I took this CD home and played it LOUD, and I think my neighbors thought I was killing a cat!! This is definitely an aquired taste, and I LOVE this band. I am addicted. This is some of the funnest (good word), most danceable, singable music in a LONG time. and some of the funniest. It is so hard for me to pick my favorite song cause I like so many. But I guess ON THE TIDAL WAVE OF YOUNG BLOOD would be the favorite, for its dance-y beat, but also for one of my all time favorite lines in a song: "Shouting from a tower, what must be everyone's opinion: they are going out to bars and they are getting into cars, I have seen it, with my own eyes!!" just funny. -- sue

I first heard CYHSY on Late Night with Conan O' Brien. I had heard the name bounced around, but had never heard any songs, untill This Home on Ice on Conan.
This Home on Ice is my favorite track, Maybe since it was the first song I had ever heard, or maybe because of the wonderful whimsical sound they achieve as a band on this song.

I wont lie, I heard about CYHSY from Pitchfork, but you hear so much from Pitchfork that there's still a story about how I actually got in to them. After Pitchfork mentioned them, I downloaded In This Home On Ice from the official website and was just blown away. I guess I wouldn't claim to know exactly what the song is about, but at the time, there was a lot of problems between myself and my father, and when the title of the song is repeated over and over again (natch) at the end of the song, it just resonated really strongly with me. The album as a whole helped me get through a very difficult summer.

In This Home On Ice remains my favorite song.

I was moving to new york in the summer of 2004 and was researching venues on the internet. i had heard of pianos and randomly clicked on this band with a silly name but a great blurb. i listened to demos of what were then called "home on ice", "lost and found" and "tidal wave". i navigated to the page where they were hosting their mp3s and found an early demo of "details of the war", which was probably all alec done in his home studio. i saw them at sin e and pianos sometime that fall and then went to every show of their infamous residency at pianos (wednesay nights in february? maybe it was january). the first of the 4 nights had maybe 20 people and by the last gig it was sold out.

favorite songs have to be "upon this tidal wave of young blood" and "in this home on ice" because i was blown away at my first listening to the early demos of those songs. and they are what got me to be one of the first people in new york to see CYHSY live (and to immediately like and be a proponent of them).
