Win Tori Amos Box Set

If you grew up in the '90s, you probably had Little Earthquakes. You were impressionable, you had "feelings," and along came Amos. Hers was a healthy dose of the naked angst of those grunge years, but with a new angle: Tori's intimate, personal poetry was set to music that fused her classical chops to proggy piano pop; the sound of Earthquakes and Under The Pink was fresh -- and Tori became the template for a legion of Lilith Fair wannabes.

Those were her groundbreaking, career-launching records, but she didn't stop there -- and to celebrate her busy career, Tori recently released A Piano: The Collection: an 86-song, five-disc box set full of songs from her studio releases; B-sides; the originals that debuted on her best-of Tales Of A Librarian; unreleased demos and alternate mixes; and Tori's written commentary on each song. The discs follow her career chronologically, with Disc One being a re-sequenced Little Earthquakes, with new mixes and B-sides, and on from there. Full info here. Best part: The box looks like a piano!

We have one of these packages to give away, and entering shouldn't be too difficult for you Amos fans. All you gotta do is post a comment telling us your favorite Tori tune, and we'll pick a winner at random on Monday 12/18 at 6PM EST. If you need some help remembering songs, the tracklist for the box set is after the jump. And if you don't wind up winning the box set and need it in a hurry, the entire collection is available digitally via Urge and iTunes on 12/19. You won't get the piano box, but you will get the tracks with a quickness. Good luck!

But mostly Precious Things.

Ohmigod, I can't believe Raspberry Swirl isn't on this box (my favorite song)... though I'd still like to win it! If you haven't heard Raspberry Swirl, I'd recommend finding the Lip Gloss version off the Cruel / Raspberry Swirl CD Single. Actually, I'll go ahead and post it over at my blog if you want to hear it.

after much consideration? the dakota remix of "hey jupiter" comes out on top.

honerable mentions to "putting the damage on," "honey," and "take to the sky." her cover of springsteen's "i'm on fire" is pretty great too. also, just because it's seasonally appropriate, her "have yourself a merry little christmas" is the best rendition i've ever heard.

"Raspberry Swirl" still rocks my day - it's hard to get through a week without hearing it, on repeat, for a solid five rotations. The inventive lyrics have never made "sense" to me, but the sheer, throbbing intensity gets the blood boiling - an exciting, and dangerous, surge of excitement, especially while bombing down a multi-lane freeway. The edgy thrill of "RS" encapsulates everything I look for in a song. And a girlfriend.

Winter, followed by Putting the Damage On.

I first heard Winter when I was about 16. I bought the tape (gasp) the next day, when I also picked up my first pair of glasses. I remember listening to the song repeatedly while looking in the mirror at the new (awful, in retrospect) glasses and layering on as much lipstick as I could to try to make my mouth look more like Tori's, and take attention away from my eyes.

God, that was long ago. I still adore that song.

My personal favorite is a b-side/instrumental from the Under The Pink days called "All The Girls Hate Her."
I actually learned this tune note for note in high school about ten years ago, as a "piano major" in my high school's arts program.

You can hear and feel the majestic beauty of the song at its pinnacle, and in later sequences, the tension that probably explains the title behind it.
Someday I might record my own version of it, and make it longer too since it's such a great song and a pretty much forgotten gem.

"Caught a Lite Sneeze." The lyrics always got to me -- boys on my left side, boys on my right side, boys in the middle and you're not here... the way you can be surrounded by people and never the right ones.

My favourite Tori Amos song is "Pretty good year" It was the first song I learned on Piano, it makes me smile when I'm down and made me cry tears of joy when I saw Tori live in 2005 *big grin* Not only that it got me my A* in music as it was the song I not only played on piano but also sang... I'm no Tori Amos though, but I am very thankful for this song! It's the song I listen to before I go on stage as it calms my nerves and it's the song that has always and always will inspire me to write music, so regardless of whether I am lucky enough to win or not (My congrationlations to whom ever that is) I thank you greatly Tori!

My first favorite was "Marianne" - now "Take to the Sky" has the spot. I'm working on a piano version that incorporates hand cymbals - but I'm playing both parts at the same time. It's a little tricky, but I'll smooth it out soon enough. Also, I've set up my keyboard behind my piano so I can play both - just like Tori.

It's essentially a coin toss for me, all dependent on how I'm feeling. Pretty Good Year has to be my personal favorite, because it reminds me of high school and the first time I heard Under The Pink and fell head over heels in love with all things Tori. On the other hand, there's Hotel, which is so great, it almost makes it hard just to have one personal favorite song. A final throw in could be her cover of Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas which I remember buying on an import single from a local record store for 18 bucks just to hear that song, and it may just be the most beautiful thing she has ever done honestly.

I love the way she sings ... from very raw to very high toned ... just like life ... up and down ... making me who I am ... making My Body Map ...

Its hard to pick a favorite Tori song. Cooling will always make me cry but happy to have spent time with friends we may lost. Mother is also a favorite because it showed me my emotional and physical attachments to my family. But then there's Blood Roses or Precious Things that I can just screeeaaammmm all my frustration and anger away to.

Winter is my favourite song. I first discovered Tori at 6th form and i couldn't listen to her enough. There was a girl in my form who i later discovered loved Tori too. she sang and played winter on the piano for me so often. It was the song i fell in love to so it will always remain special to me. The other song is 'a case of you' a cover i know but the lyrics and the way Tori tells the story make my neck quiver

A gut feeling of the horror of past bad times yet I realize that they are behind me, and while they are still a part of me I can move on with my life. I guess in a sense it gives me hope. My favorite started out as the transitional "Cornflake Girl". "Winter" got me hooked (and I will never look back). "Suede" is so sensuous and "Take to the Sky" is empowering. I still wait for the ramp up in "Pretty Good Year" every time that I play it. I can play "pancake" and "cloud on my tounge" thousands of times in a row and never get tired of them. I can't imagine picking a favorite. I can't imagine picking several favorites. I can't imagine a Tori Amos song that I DON'T like. Crucify, Precious Things, Winter, Mother, Past The Mission, Baker Baker, Hey Jupiter, Yes Anastasia, Amber Waves, Sweet The Sting, cover of Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde... the list is endless. Do I get disqualified for not choosing one favorite? I hope not. Just in case, I'll go with Crucify. Why DO we crucify ourselves? Like so many others, she has touched my life immeasurably and her albums create the soundtrack to my life.

For me, the alien settings and emotions so down-to-earth that they're subterranean make from the choirgirl hotel the most exquisite of all Tori's crowns, and "Raspberry Swirl", while not the biggest of stones, is the jewel which shines in Its centre. Dark, but in warm way, and through chaos it gives a sense of freedom, or at least of trying to escape, and the topics it covers are those which have haunted me most strongly for all of my life. This all makes for a bizarrely enjoyable nightmare which no-one, not even Kate Bush or Björk and certainly not Tori herself has ever managed to really come close to. Even imitations such as Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting for?" seem impressive on their own, but pale into nothingness when compared to the original.

After a few moments of running my head through Toris back catalogue...I have decided SPARK is my favourite song.............reason being she gave it to the world at a very difficult time for me. It was just the shining spark of light I needed at that time and I will always be thankful to Tori for that! It would be nice to hear the re mastered version on this new collection. Plus it has a very provacative video thts another reason.

Past The Mission coming a very close second!!
