She totally tore up Kurt's rep after he killed himself (the father of her kid, who WILL see those comments someday as they were printed everywhere) and she has used his death to promote herself and her lack of talent ever since. One thing I do want to bring up is that part of the battle over Kurt's estate hinges on the strained relationships Kurt had with his bandmates when he died. It wasn't all perfect and then Courtney came in and ruined it. Things were in the shitter - Dave Grohl even admits this in interviews. Kurt was entitled to a bigger share of the royalties. I'm not saying it's fair, but it's something pretty standard for lead singers. Courtney wants to make sure he gets it. I don't see why that's so insane.

You know what's funny? Dave G. and Courtney argue in the press but when you seem them at some corporate event (backstage at MTV Awards, et caetera) they are both chucklin' and hugging. I adore Kathleen Hanna and Siouxsie Sue and Poly Styrene. Patti Smith is like a deity to me. No one claims John Lennon wrote all of Yoko Ono's "songs" (He was far too good for that). Jim Morrison was a bloated, egomanical drunk posing as a "poet"(Thank you Lester Bangs). She probably just needed to pay the court expenses. But the Doors were a very democratic band, unlike most other iconic rock bands, they always split the credits and money squarely four ways. And the songwriting credit is always: "The Doors." Yikes! Indie bloggers really is missinformed, dudes. Velvets debut came out same year as the Doors debut...1967. The only diff was that the Velvets sold about 28 copies and the Doors sold a couple millions. If I had a nickel for every time someone said Nirvana was "overrated", I'd have a whole lot of nickels. So they weren't all virtuoso musicians. So what? Kurt may not have been able to play the guitar very well, but he was still a great songwriter who wrote GREAT pop songs, even when he was trying not to. And Dave is probably the greatest drummer ever who hasn't yet choked on his own vomit. I dig Courtney - she'll blow you away live, I do think people are pissed off because of the sexism thing. All those female "artistes" that everyone loves like Kathleen Hannah (for christ sake) are so non-threatening. They're politically self-righteous without the slightest bit of chaos or nuance. Its been 12 years since Kurt's death. And yeh i'm certain he wanted people to remember him but for the music not for his death OR personal life. Courtney has claimed before that Dave and Krist "never wrote any songs for Nirvana". Not true. Dave both wrote and sung, the song "Marigold."

Rather than taking sides and being so emotional over the whole Dave/Kurt/Courtney thing, that involves people that none of us actually know, how about we look at the facts? Kurt and Courtney were both tortured people, wracked by demons, who self-medicated through the use of opiates. Opiates dull existential pain better than anything else. When you use opiates, you go through a repetitive daily cycle of agonising tension and depression (withdrawal), followed by short periods of emotional numbness (use), all day long, day after day, in a downward spiral; it turns you into a complete and utter pyschological and physical wreck.
Courtney has had a dreadful time,dating back to when she was a young child.
If you read her interviews, quotes, and lyrics, you see that, despite prolonged drug use and lack of formal education, she is an extraordinarily bright and talented woman. If you saw her in Larry Flynt, you will know what a gifted actress she is. You might say, "She was playing herself." Well, I couldn't play myself, I couldn't recreate the troubled periods of my life on the director's cue, and neither could most people. Unless you don't have the intelligence to recognise brilliance in others, there can be no denying that Courtney is something quite special. Same goes for Kurt - an incredible talent, but different than Courtney. Kurt was a far better musician than his wife. Dave Grohl is also a superb musician and a great songwriter.
