Dark-Hearted EvanescenceAlts Sing Sufjan This is really big because it finally establishes that you don't need to wear twee costumes with butterfly wings to play Sufjan songs, you can totally do it when you wake up with your dyed-black bangs covering your lip rings, too! See, no need to go out of your way and dress up to play Sufjan songs. Watch some angsty Hot Topic teens cover "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." (what, you expected "Adlai Stevenson"?) at Hipster Runoff.

I hardly find this any more offensive than the countless other cover videos on Youtube. In fact, I think it's a pretty decent performance.

But, hey, these kids look different, so let's totally make fun of them.

Ha ha ha! I love it when HRO addresses "meaningful-core!" To add way too much significance to this innocuous homemade video... for me, this song has always been Sufjan's most poignant. The final lines of "In my best behavior, I am really just like him..." are so shocking, since Sufjan seems so innocent and pure. It hits at the heart of his Christian belief, i.e., the nature of mankind. When goth kids sing it, it adds a double meaning. People expect them to have dark thoughts. But we're really just like the goth kids who are really like sweet Sufjan who is really like a serial killer.

its actually a half-decent cover...but because of the fact that they are goth that makes it therefore bad?

Of course they choose the one about the serial killer.
Amy Lee is looking kind of rough though. You'd think with all her major label success she could still afford a stylist.

That's actually not bad. Why all the hatin'? It's just a couple of kids playing a song they like. It's an amazing song and they do it a fair amount of justice.

Gonna have to agree that this is actually good. Hipster Runoff is pretty lame for their implications on this based on the kids haircuts and what they "should" be listening to.

Lame.
