David Bowie: Cover To Cover, Highline Festival

The Thin White Duke turned 60 this year, marking a logical point for reflection on a career that's as influential as ever, from an artist who still dictates taste with his words, concert attendance, and lustrous body of work. But this officially sanctioned comp of artists covering Bowie classics is flat out disappointing! Though maybe that's 'cause we've only heard of half the artists. Check the list:

01 "Jean Genie" - The Dandy Warhols
02 "Starman" - Culture Club
03 "Fame" - Duran Duran
04 "Ziggy Stardust" - White Buffalo
05 "The Man Who Sold The World" - Midge Ure
06 "Oh You Pretty Things" - Peter Noone
07 "Moonage Daydream" - Terrorvision
08 "All The Young Dudes" - Skids
09 "Golden Years" - Loose Ends
10 "Right On Mother" - Peter Noone
Don't let us dissuade you, though; Bowie bonds could always use the bump. Buy it here.

A slightly better Bowie bulletin comes from the David-curated High Line Festival, taking place at a host of NYC venues located along the High Line (a 1930s rail structure set to open as a public park in '08) on the West Side of Manhattan. No surprise that Arcade Fire have been summoned, though the rest of the lineup is a tad underwhelming. Acts include Air, Bang On A Can, Claude Cahun, Daniel Johnston, Deerhoof, Ken Nordine, Laurie Anderson, Laurie McLeod, Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Meow Meow, Ricky Gervais (aka "Little Fat Man", Spanish Film Retrospective, The Polyphonic Spree, and The Secret Machines. We're with BV: Where's TVOTR? Full schedule after the jump.

TERRORVISION? good lord...
you could make a better bowie covers comp by sticking a bunch of his song titles into the hype machine any day of the week.

Hopefully, that's the original Duran Duran recording from circa 1979 and they didn't actually do a new version.

Oh, not so exciting. I briefly glanced at this post during school and, upon seeing "David Bowie," became out of my mind with happiness.

I thought it was assumed all along that Bowie himself would be performing. THAT would make an event worth going to.

Oh. and it's not even on (or anywhere near) the darned High Line. What gives?

As for your comment about the lineup for the festival being underwhelming you couldn't be talking about THE SECRET MASHINES. They are one of the best bands to come around in a long time. Go see them, you will not be dissapointed. I have seen many concerts in my time (I am in my 40's)

Andrew: That had been the plan, originally. He only canceled that performance recently, due to an 'ongoing project'. That, along with several other clues, leads me to think he's probably working on a new album.
