David Byrne Assesses The State Of Rock Music • In a new blog post, Byrne calls Sunday's indie all star concert a triumph of art rock and explains why popular music may be at a peak. He also contrasts the approach of his creative, "serious" Dark Was The Night collaborators to the hit factory that produced "Umbrella." GOSH! Anyone else get the completely comfortable, decent and totally respectable feeling while reading this? The guy's genuine earnest approach and demeanor is exactly the same as his writing and it all reads so incredibly......ugh....i don't even know the right word.... pleasant? That's maybe it.. pleasant...we're lucky to have people like David Byrne around making the rest of us appreciate the genius of simplicity and rationale interesting thought.

I would argue that the definition of pop has expanded. Take the ramones, who were bad ass and not exactly pro pop in their day, but now listening to them they fit squarely into an interesting take on pop music, which is basically what byrne is talking about

Smart man. Pop music is at a peak in its current cycle, unfortunately. We're at a point similar to the terrible, self-indulgent end of the 70's (art-rock operas), 80's (New Kids on the Block, etc.) and the terrible, uber-processed end of the 90's (Backstreet Boys, N*sync, etc.) All this horrible auto-tune music and Disney stuff will soon be gone though..hopefully. We just need a Joy Division (or Sex Pistols)/ Nirvana/ The Strokes to save us.
