David Lee Roth's Absence Explained: No "Jump," No Dice
Although everybody knew what was keeping Eddie from making the scene, there was lots of confusion and speculation as to why David Lee Roth wasn't around to make A scene last night. We sorta missed the guy, spandex and all. Dave maintains he wasn't invited to perform; the Hall Of Fame issued a press release saying he WAS invited to perform. Who to believe -- a rock institution, or ... a rock institution? Finally, last night in the press room, Scott Weiland provided some clarity (via Billboard):
We were asked to perform. Kinda what happened was, [David] wanted to sing the song "Jump." We felt from an artistic standpoint, and I'm being totally honest with you, that it wasn't a song we felt comfortable with. We don't have keyboards. To bring a keyboard on stage wouldn't work for us. We said we'd do "Jamie's Cryin'" or "You Really Got Me," and he was adamant that wasn't okay.OK, we have an answer. But what would have surprised you more say, four years ago: that David Lee Roth voluntarily abstained from performing at Van Halen's Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction? Or that we said "Scott Weiland" and "clarity" in the same breath?

So VR didn't feel good about keyboards... but they felt good enough to attempt (poorly) Ain't Talkin Bout Love?

Is there a name for that Weiland dance type thing?
Oh yeah. Stupid.

thanks for clearing that up for us...
and speaking of clarity, that last line is
stereogum at it's best!

So Scott wanted to do a nice, authentic Van Halen rocker like "You Really Got Me." Yeah... good thinking. What's more appropriate than their most famous COVER SONG, Scott? Jesus, heroin really does make you stupid.

I don't think Van Halen playing their cover of "You Really Got Me" would be inauthentic or stupid. What does Scott Weiland have against keyboards, anyways?

Did anyone else hear the guy in the audience shouting "that wasn't Van Halen! That wasn't Van Halennnnnn!" after VR played? Hilarious. I like to think it was the drunk Peter Buck who was later seen throwing his amp into the crowd.

They should have done "Runnin' With The Devil". That's all I know.

Why the hell did Velvet Revolver get to pick the song?? What assholes: "we're here to pay tribute to the band and ignore their wishes at the same time! What? The song we want to do is a cover? Really?"
jag-offs.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just isn't getting it. They should've inducted Van Halen years ago when the band still had their chops, sanity and sobriety. The Hall really blew it by not enshrining Link Wray before he passed away, but the biggest blunder of all was inducting the Sex Pistols before The Stooges. Iggy Pop was writhing on glass and smearing himself with peanut butter when Sid Vicious was just a wee lad eating his meat so he could have his pudding.

According to the NY Post, Velvet UNDERGROUND inducted Van Halen!
"Hall of Fame officials said Roth was offered a chance to play with Velvet Underground, which is inducting the group"

it's all a bafflement to me....come on DLR Stand and Deliver -- you know once he got there it'd been a fun fixer/mixer to go down in the wild induction "event" annals... and where was Alex or even Wolfie? Shees I'd have rather seen Valerie but, I digress...I agree that "Running With The Devil" would have been a apt song considering....oh and re: that Scott Weiland "dance routine" --looked like his 'best' try for a Jagger imitation - must a been trying to impress Keith...I think NOT.... oh and YAY to Patty -- Rock On!
