Death Cab For Cutie, Scarlett Johansson Live From New York
Just a reminder that Jon Pareles' favorite band, Death Cab For Cutie, and Lindsay Lohan's least favorite actress, Scarlett Johansson, are on Saturday Night Live tonight. We're gonna DVR, but if something exciting happens (e.g., Gibbard lip-synchs, S. Jo parodies L. Lo, Lazy Sunday: Pt. 2), give us your torrents/video uploads in the comments.

i won't even pretend that i'm too cool to like death cab, because i love those suckers.
but it's called balance. it's called turning up the monitor to keep in tune with your own single.
I saw ben on tuesday at bowery, so I know he can sing the song. It must just be nerves, or SNL has the ability to suck the life out of anyone.
Score = 0
...and "Crooked Teeth"
I rather enjoy Death Cab, but nothing too exciting to report from the SNL appearance.
I am, however, pleased to have Andy Samberg as my official spokesman as a shaggy-haired dude.
Score = 0
Ben really looked like he was having some fun in the seque clip before the performance; then I think the sheer breadth of the show and it's audience flipped him out...as evidenced by the way he sung the words "..through my atmosphere" towards the end
pure shakiness
wonderful, though

Yes. Andy Samberg is the shaggy-haired dude.

God Saturday NL has become SOFUCKINGBAD, that even with Scarlett whoahansson as host, I was only able to last up to 30 minutes of sitting in front of NBC. and that was with MANY attempts to change throughout those 30 minutes.
What bra size is Scarl?!
Score = 0
I thought the episode was a bust all around. The opening seemed promising, but then all the sketches and performances left something to be desired. Weekend Update was pretty funny though.

Let's see.
No... no... still not funny. Although, they did have that Narnia rap thing that was sort of funny a while back. Of course, this moderate success has been diminished by the fact that SNL spent this last week DESPERATELY trying to remind audiences about "that one funny thing they did the other week". Every single SNL promo involved the Narnia Rap participants making some awkward reference to the sketch, and to the fact that people had downloaded it off the internet. Plus, they had the guys from the sketch on the late night talk show circuit talking about it.
FOR GOD'S SAKE IT WAS ONE (sorta) FUNNY SKETCH. GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

Stop posting that contraction...

thanks to S. Jo for proving that it's hard for even a talented actress to bring the funny.
One of the reasons SNL has gone down hill is the fact that the hosts have been people who just aren't talented comedians.
I love the show and hope it improves soon.

All the boys seemed nervous, Gibbard the most of course. It was almost painful to watch soul meets body. Crooked Teeth was much better though.
Overall, I say good job to the boys.
Poor SNL... it just doesn't have a hope anymore. :(

I liked it, not hilarious but solid snl. good weekend update. bad that they played the taco town commercial AGAIN. though I laughed at it AGAIN.

so i'm the only one who wants the swedish chef ringtone on my phone?
Score = 0
Ben looked like he was having a sweaty panic attack. It was uncomfortable to watch.
Score = 0
The swedish chef ringtone was the only really funny part of the show. Can someone just shoot Horatio Sans that guy was trying not to laugh through the first half of that damn submarine sketch, which rather sucked anyway.
Death Cab did sound shakey and not at all like they performed at Bumbershoot, I just hope that wasn't alot of people's first impression of them.
Score = 0
Umm...I thought they were good...better in that performance than on the single...but maybe that's just 'cause I don't really like Death cab anyway...
And SNL keeps getting worse every year. I think NBC just keeps airing it as filler for their already-lacking Saturday schedule.

Eff Lazy Sunday, the best SNL sketch in recent memory was the "Duluth" sketch with Will Forte last night. Wow.
Score = 0
Yes. "Fly High Duluth" was funny like whoa.

wtf's the problem with you guys?? i tuned in, on and off, to the SNL and not only did i find it funnier than before, Scarlett was monstruously talented throughout the show!! i was bowled over by her performances. seriously. and i'm not even an avid S.Jo fan. she showed me she had, not only range, but talent. this kind of show usually gets monotonous after a few sketches, but she was different, and refreshing, in each one. there was an energy to last night's show that i haven't seen in a long time.
my two cents.

Scarlett is dreamy.

You know... Ive been watching SNL for many many years. Probably started when most of you was sucking your mamas tit. Yea they have there rough times, but trust me... good things are just around the horizon.
Score = 0
S'okay. "Duluth" was pretty good, and the skit ended with an actual joke (The intro lasted so long that they ran out of time). Usually they just run a premise for a while and arbitrarily end it at some point. This one had a structure that led somewhere.
"Chandelier" was good but it reminded me of that "Portrait in a Wine Glass" commercial skit. "Mr. Willoughby" was good in the way that all the various Victorian Parlor Ladies skits have been.
"Deep House Dish" is only funny if you have a friend named "Tiara" who's boring. I don't. "The Barry Gibb Show" was a good example of a recurring skit where nothing funny really happens plotwise, but the characterizations are so bizarre that the skits killed anyway. "Do you have anything to add, Robin?" "Nao, nao I don't." Or the parts where JT harmonizes with Fallon. Sweet. "Needlers" is also good predictable filler. You know exactly how it's gonna go but it's still fun to watch. No surprises but Poehler and Meyers are razor sharp. DHD is the opposite of that. There ain't no rabbit in that hat.
These are unfunny times we're living in. Even WU's jokes seem more mean-spirited than clever. The cast are mostly talented and solid, I just hope they gel as a unit (shedding the detrius first)and get some better material to perform. I like Samberg but I get the feeling there's already expectations that he's gonna be the breakout star that brings SNL back. Anyway, the show's been much worse in the past, and eventually gets better. I'll hang on. You can't force genius, but you can create the right conditions for it to happen.

DCfC was a little shaky, but enjoyable.
best SNL in recent memory? dane cook and james blunt, a few weeks ago. i'm not even that big a dane cook fan, but watching him with that awful turtleneck sweater was the funniest sketch in a long time.
Score = 0
People always get way too negative about SNL and then act like it used to be the best thing ever. Seems like everyone forgets that Will Ferrell wasn't even that funny his first couple seasons. The show has its ups and downs but it's an hour and a half of sketch comedy every week, it's not easy. There's a reason no other sketch show has overtaken it. Chappelle certainly had a lot more buzz for about a year, but they had a lot fewer sketches and episodes as well, and now it's done.
They don't have any knockout stars right now but do have some really good young cast members. Samberg has the goofy-weird thing, Hader showed some great impressions early but hasn't done much lately, Kristen Wiig and Sudeikis have been pretty good as well. I also like Poehler, Myers, and Forte. Horatio and Finesse Mitchell are the only people I actively dislike. Seems like they're doing a lot more weird conceptual stuff this year which is fine with me.
There weren't any fantastic sketches last night but it was pretty solid. SJ acquitted herself pretty well I thought. She sang a lot better later than in her intro. I thought Duluth was hysterical...Forte is crazy.
Score = 0
the only reason snl has gotten uber lame is because they only book movie stars (who are usually terribly boring and just there to promote there new movie i.e. scarlett jo and the list goes on) who don't have a clue how to be funny. they are simply dull people. when you have a comedian (dane cook, chris rock) or a descent enough actor (justin bateman) then the show has a little more of an attention span to it. when i saw the commercial for scarlett/dcfc i was curious to see how death cab would do and how amazing it is that they have made it to snl.
so yes, snl has def. lost it in some sense. if u have tivo or a vcr then it's not bad to just tape it and go out for the night and watch it hung over the next morning realizing it will suck. you really don't need to waste your saturday night anymore on this show with your friends but there are some promising people like amy poehler, andy samberg, will forte and a couple of others that are worth catching.
the strokes next week should be somewhat interesting...

Torrents? Please!

Poehler and Dratch are nearly always funny. I spent 90% of the opening bit watching Poehler instead of SJ. Forte is good, too, and Sudeikis. I've never seen Myers be funny. He sometimes performs at UCB and I don't get his appeal.

I collected some comments from the general blogosphere about DCFC's appearance on SNL and posted them on my blog:

My fave: "The musical guest was Death Cab For Cutie. I discovered that this band is the modern day equivalent of Hootie and the Blowfish. Like, I'm not even exaggerating."

I've heard people saying like "who? Death Cab for what? Who are they? wth! This is SNL..who let those guys on stage? They suck..."

SNL has always been a show that's been dependent on its guest hosts. This year really shows that. Take a look at the first episode of the season, that really shitty 90 minutes where we watched Jon "Napoleon Dynamite" Heder reveal that he's not as good an actor as we thought and really just a lot like Dynamite. That was hard to watch. But then they bring in a decent comedic actor like Jack Black, who actually has improv skills and range, and it turns out to be one of the best SNL episodes since the early nineties. That episode was seriously amazing. Only one bad sketch in the whole show.
What Michaels should do is realize this and stop bringing on these horrendous ratings grab type guest hosts. Donald Trump? Paris Hilton? Seriously, WTF. Those guys were worse than that "anyone can host" contest they held back in the eighties.
I didn't watch all of the Scarlett Jo episode, but from what I saw it was pretty bad, as I expected. Jo is way overated as an actress, she's just a girl who's managed to fall into some great scripts and gotten a rep as an artsy indie actress whose made a lot of 'brave choices'. She definitely doesn't have a funny bone in her body, and every interview I've seen with her paints her as a bit of a dull twit. Yes, Lost in Translation was okay, but it was mostly gesture acting on her part and the brunt of the film was on Murphy's excellence. The only reason for her appeal is because of her pretty-but-plain appearance, which gives guys the hope that "yeah, I could have a chance with her if she wasn't famous" while giving unattractive women the delusion that they're not so bad off if a girl like that can be considered sexy.
HATEFEST OUT.

Overall an average episode, although I liked Fly High Duluth and definitely the one with the guy buying the engagement ring.

if it wasn't for week-end update, and amy poehler's general awesomeness, snl would be a wash...
i can never just watch it - it doesn't hold my attention enough to sit back and watch the live broadcast. i have to record it in order to be free to ffwd over commercials and lame skits. strokes next week? intriguing. dcfc weren't too bad... to be honest, i didn't really like 'plans' when i first heard it, but the two songs they played have encouraged me to give the album another listen, even if the vocals were a little out of tune.

Oh yeah, and whatever "general awesomeness" Amy had in UCB was lost in her first couple seasons on SNL.
Still, she's better than Jimmy Fallon.

Pulling off a really good SNL musical performance is tough. Hard to come across really good on TV and it's just not the normal sound situation, no matter what. I remember feelng for Ben Folds 5 when they lost their place doing "Brick" on SNL. Apparently it was monitors. I'm sure the bands are intimidated to not get what they want. Will anyone ever top the Replacements? nope.

fido - what about amy's impression of avril lavigne? or her lindsay-lohan-of-2007? or that pre-adolescent hyperactive kid she plays? for some reason she slays me, although admittedly i can't think of anything too great she's done this year.
oh, and hatefest is right on the money. that was like an m.a. dissertation dude... pure genius.

FLY HIGH DULUTH- best sketch of the year.
I agree with the guy who said SNL is on the verge of goodness.
remember how bad it was in Will Farrell's early years.
this always happens.
Where can I watch Fly High Duluth online?
Score = 0
Why was there a Limp Bizkit reference in usually funny Weekend Update? I had to sit there a second and go, "Wait...nookie...what...hang on, oh that's right, that joke may have been just as crushingly unfunny back in 1999, but at least those seven years ago it would have been vaguely relevant." Then I tried to see if there were any infomercials on. At least that way I'd be getting the humor from the source, instead of SNL's bad, winking, toothless parodies of advertisements, morning news shows, or public access house music shows. Stupid MTV shows don't need to be made fun of--they need to be ignored.
Score = 0
ok seriously I thought this was a really great episode for the season, I liked most of the sketches even though I'm not a big fan of Scarlett. That "fly high Duluth" one was funny, and "My Super Sweet 16" was frickin hysterical - I laughed really hard at that one, mostly because it was so ridiculous, yet not that far from the way teenage girls with rich parents really act. The "700 Gang" was totally funny, and much better than Smigel's cartoons have been recently.
What I think is dragging the show down is some dull performers like Seth Meyers, Horatio Sanz, Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch, but they do have some great new people - I love Jason and Kristen! They've done some really funny stuff on their short time on the show, and Samberg ain't doing too bad either even though he's mostly known for "Lazy Sunday".
So in conclusion and in summary, the show could be somewhat better but it's not like it sucks as some people are acting like.

apparently scarlett is a 34c....... isnt she alot bigger?
what a lady.. i have been completely in love the girl for ages.. such elegance and beauty.

half to disagree with what someone said up there...
scarlett i think has yet to be given a good role.
she is a talented girl, an what a beauty at that. lost in translation is the best ive seen her in yet, an although she worked with woody.. the film wasnt great in my opinion..
landing her with a great role has yet to come..
i adore the girl, she couldnt be any more beautiful if she tried.. i doubt hatefest you would have a chance with the girl..famous or not.. she is a complete beuty an the "plain" you are referring to is the fact that she is a natural beauty ..not make up'd beyond belief like most hollywood hags...
she has a significance about her.... she has that x factor that makes her more beautiful in my eyes than any other actress , especially in her age group..
im not a celebrity freak that has to know everythign about the girl, i thikn i no her nem, some movies an her age possibly... i just cant get enough of the girl.. id give anythign to meet her
closest ive been is meeting cillian murphy last august at a music festival(starred alongside her in girl with a pearl)......
id give anythign to meet the girl, shes fanatastic
