Death Cab For Halpert

Did any of you guys take us up on our "Guess Which Song Gibbard Will Cover" game last night and stream Ben's set at 9:30 Club? 'Cause you forgot to tell us that Office mate John Krasinski strapped on a guitar and got on stage. Bad readers. You know we're geeks and this is what we live for! Details are sketchy and we have no .jpgs or .movs to back it up, but Pop Candy reports Jim Halpert appeared during Ben's set last night, armed with a six string, "professing his love of Wilco"...

Add that to his prior tryst with the Shins, and Krasinski continues to make his case to supersede Braff as 'top indie-loving sitcom star wet dream.' All he has to do now is date and dump Mandy Moore (two Moore jabs in one day, apologies).

Last night's cameo isn't that surprising -- Ben and John both appear in Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, and John co-hosted the Directions DVD launch party last year -- but we want details. Fill us in.

Or stream the archived set here; we imagine your cue will be the simultaneous scream of a few hundred females?

Best exchange from last night's The Office ep goes to Ed Helms and Angela Kinsey though...

ANDY: Angela, hey, oh thank god. Go tell somebody! [Floating down river]
ANGELA: What Andy? What should I tell them?
ANDY: Go tell them that I'm floating away, obviously.
ANGELA: I don't understand what you want from me. [Playing dumb]
ANDY: Angela, it's pretty simple. Look at what I'm doing and GO TELL SOMEBODY IT!!
Classic Helms.

UPDATE: Give Me My Remote's got some pictorial proof...

Was that at the late show? There were two vlast night. I was at the early one, and no one joined him onstage....

Very cool. Ben is appearing in an upcoming film that John is directing, so cool cross-reference there.

JKran is already doing a movie with Mandy Moore this summer. They play an engaged couple. That should be good enough, lol.

The stream/download on the NPR site is of the early show (which I was at, and there was no OfficeJim in sight). As posted above, there were two Gibbard shows at the 9:30 last night; doors were at 6:30 for the first one (Ben was on at 8:30). 2nd show doors were 10, Gibbard at midnight.

John Krasinski is the new Zach Braff, but not so nerdy, and actually likable.

gah. i was at that show, the late show, which is when this happened. it was the worst concert of my life due to the fact that it was the worst crowd i have ever seen. i felt terrible for ben gibbard; people were so disrespectful.

Is it me, or is Ben Gibbard starting to look like Corey Feldman? Compare this picture: http://www.orato.com/files/story/1100/Corey%20Feldman%20stand%20by%20me.jpg
to the one in the Stereogum story; he's a doppelganger.

I agree totally with the Corey Feldmen comment. I guess we all know what Ben's gonna look like when he grows up.

yes, people did freak out when they saw john krasinski, but where i was standing none of us had any idea who he was because we were so far away. ben referred to him as "john," but you know, there's lots of johns. but everyone near enough to the stage to see was pretty pleased. they did some weird comedy bit that honestly seemed kind of staged. john asked ben to play a few songs by other bands, pretending he didn't know that they weren't death cab songs, one of them being the wilco song, then he asked ben to sing a song for him. so ben sang the line, "here's a song for you," and then pleaded for him to get off the stage. then john tried to drag away the rug ben was standing on while he was standing on it. it was mildly amusing but so bizarre and kind of forced that people weren't sure how to react after their initial glee.

and the crowd was SO DISRESPECTFUL. there was one guy who just kept SCREAMING really loudly and randomly like he was at a football game, and ben eventually stopped and lectured him for a while, ending with, "so shut the fuck up." after that things got a little calmer and it was easier to enjoy the show, but as ben put it, it was the most aggressive crowd ever. they were treating it like it was a full on death cab for cutie show or something, instead of a quiet, one person, acoustic set. i felt so bad for ben; he looked like he couldn't wait to get off the stage. i really admire him for soldiering through it as well as he did. i just hope he doesn't hate dc now.

this really upsets me, and i have no real idea why. i just hope dwight schrute doesn't start showing up onstage at sufjan stevens shows or something.

julie put it best: office jim is the new zach braff, except not so nerdy and actually likable. what is braff's appeal, honestly? or are women just that dumb as to buy into his bullshit?

oh, and the best office moment from the other night was either pam's speech at the end, or how dwight freaked out whenever someone said "voldemort".

The D.C. crowd sounds similar to the Atlanta crowd. I enjoyed Ben's singing, butcouldn't enjoy the concert experience. Girls yiping like a dying dog during every vocal pause in a song. Another loud dude (much like it was described in D.C.) shouting loudly -- almost like a roaring King Kong. Did I mention the girls started booty dancing to Ben? I didn't know it was possible to booty dance to Ben Gibbard.

Smart venue booking in NYC -- Town Hall. Classic theater, comfortable seats, great sound, and a respectful crowd. (So much better than when he played solo at bowery ballroom a couple years ago.) You could hear a pin drop during the songs at Town Hall, and Ben seemed to be happy 'bout 'dat.

I actually didn't like the episode because it setup how they were going to get rid of karen at the end of the season by giving her the corporate job. Damn! That's not for this thread tho.
