Depeche Mode, Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction Headlining Lollapalooza 2009 The Chicago Tribune has confirmed Lolla's big three anchors at the fest going down August 7-9 in Chicago's Grant Park. If only it was 1990 this year. (UPDATE: Kings Of Leon, too.)

I think I'd be more excited about seeing P for P nowadays than seeing Jane's addiction.

daaaaamn.

depeche mode - new album, sure, but relevant with the lolla crowd? no
janes - 100th reunion tour, but will still be good
beasties - havent made a rap record in 7 years, well past their prime

i guess i'd SEE all these acts, but i wouldn't be happy about it. more time to skip out early and get ice cream i suppose

A. Beasties last rap record was about 4 years ago, not 7.
B. They are working on a new rap record right now.
C. Their more recent instrumental stuff is awesome.
D. You're an idiot.

Dude, it doesn't matter if the Beasties NEVER make another album, they put on a PHENOMENAL live show. They deserve this!

Lolla usually has a major upper hand in the whole artist announcement thing due to the fact that it takes place so late, but if these are really the main acts this sucks. Im all about depeche and the beasties but come on, their's nothing new here. Perry is a giant bag of douche!

It's ironic you say that about Perry, then give props to Lolla, which HE curates. Kinda cancels each other out.

There are at least two more headliners to be announced. I'm betting the Killers go opposite Beastie Boys and Jane's closes the fest out all by their lonesome on the 9th.

What world do I live in where people think Jane's Addiction is anywhere near Radiohead or Pearl Jam as unopposed headliner? It's like Candlebox headlining.

Judging by this lineup, I think it's a 50/50 proposition that Candlebox will be headlining. They're all likely to put on a good show, but jesus, is the state of music at such a degree that the three headlining acts are all headed by men nearing, if not over, 50 years old? I guess it's a good thing that record stores are dead. It's like walking into a morgue anyway. (Yes, yes, I know there are a lot of good, young bands...but can none of them headline a 'new music festival?')

They wasted NIN last year... that lineup was pure awesome, and I think NIN could stand on their own, especially on a farewell tour. None of these three acts should be able to stand on their own with the type of crowd Lolla attracts now. Maybe the supporting acts will be great and it will be worth the $200, but I doubt it.

Oh, and of these three acts, Jane's is the least worthy of their own night, right? I'd guess Beasties, but I'm hoping for a great fourth & fifth headliner.

Are there any new(esque) bands that can headline a festival like Lolla?

I count Arcade Fire, Coldplay & Killers in terms of popularity. Maybe Death Cab. And Death Cab & Killers have already headlined.

Come to think of it, almost all of the headliners since Lolla's rebirth could have headlined the first incarnation, right?

Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk, Ben Harper, Wilco, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Pixies... I was listening to all of those groups in high school.

There is a reason why these 80"s band for all of u that havent't finished hs yet are headlining this year because for years they have had huge record sales and sold out concerts....these bands are legends ansd they continue to draw big crowds with their loyal fanbase.

If u haven't figured it out or simply u don't like them then don't go. There really is no need to even comment back to all the ignorance.

Depeche Mode just did Coachella btw. Which Tool joined Depeche Mode as headliners for the seventh annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, in 2006. Rage and Beasties also had headlined Coachella before.

Listen, can any of these new bands headline any tour. I don't think so. In a few years most of these bands will be long gone. Depeche has a huge following and have sold out every time they come to Chicago. Like the last comment, they did Coachella and blew it out of the park. Also they have an amazing live show. Which half these new bands don't have.

I guess I can understand the youngsters dismay at older bands headlining, but Depeche Mode (and the other bands too, I suspect) aren't morons. Yes, DM will be out touring their new record, but I suspect they'll make this set a bit more of a greatest hits set. And trust me, against all odds they are quite good live. A hefty portion of the back catalogue just sounds utterly immense in a setting like this. Never Let Me Down Again, for example.

When did the under 30 crowd become so pathetic? When did you stop appreciating the musical roots of the bands you like so much? Where is the respect you whiny little maggots? I'm 34 and am looking forward to ALL the good music at Lolla. There is not a band around in this scene that hasn't been influenced and shaped by bands like Depeche Mode, Lou Reed, the Cure, David Bowie, Tool, and the list goes on. Why are bands like Depeche Mode on the main stage? BECAUSE THEY HAVE EARNED IT! They have been churning out fantastic, influential and yes, still relevant music for over 25 years and they can still fill stadiums that all your little bands would kill to play. And as they should, when did success become a crime? Depeche Mode has never sold their sound out to please the masses, the masses came to their sound as they will on closing night of Lolla. You have no sense of respect or history. The bands you love would spit on you if they heard you talking about Lou Reed and Depeche Mode like this. You don't have to like them but Jesus Christ shut up and stop whining and have some respect. Give it time, your bands, if they have saying power will get to the big stages in time, when they have paid their dues. This "I want everything my way and I want it right now" generation of losers really makes me sad for the future of music. Have patience, and instead of knocking down these bands that have been around so long, maybe take the time to LISTEN to them and see what it is about them that has influenced your generation of music so deeply, and why after all these years, they are still bringing in the masses to see them live.
