Devo 2.0

Reader Dave writes in...
Somehow, I blame y'all for supporting Kidz Bop. Now we have Devo 2.0. Yes, Disney took the winning formula that the A-Teens used with Abba and applied it to tweens and Devo. Upsetting.More upsetting than "Whip It" rewritten for a Swiffer commercial? (Watch that here, Win Media.) Plus, Mark Mothersbaugh wrote the theme to Rugrats, and pretty much anything he's even been offered, so you shouldn't be surprised.
Now Death Kids For Cutie ... that would be a different story.
On an unrelated note, I totally just met Teddy Geiger. Ultra hangs out with Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst and I get Love Monkey guy. Baby steps...

This is what happens when irony gets pushed so far that it comes out the other side - as some demented version of sincerity.
Let it be a lesson to us all.

Devo fans should check this out for a cool suprise:

At least the A*Teens were polished.

Jesus, Scott. If you love Ben Gibbard so much, why don't you marry him?

Agreed. Changing the name of the blog to "We Love Death Cab And Everything They Stand For, And Might Stand For In The Future, Too" might get you a few more hits, as well. Or at least a Spin sponsorship.

Mr. Headset, great comment but that is exactly what happened with Devo the first time around. I swear I remember my older brother saying something like you just did.

Hrm. People, I think you're missing Scott's point, it's that Devo has been hyper-commercial as a legacy for quite some time now, so it's hardly something to write home about if there's just another example. So as an example of something that *would* be worth being concerned with, he offers up a similar "cash-in on the kids" formula applied to a different band. So he uses an example of a band that he likes, so what? I think it's a good counter-example nonetheless.
(My own feelings on Death Cab are mixed; I didn't bother to buy Plans (and by no means intend to at any later time), but I went out and bought "Drive Well, Sleep Carefully". Go figure.)

Another vote thumbs-down on Death Cab. They're not everyone's thang.

Would any kid see this and really get into it? Ah well, check out this early 80's UK version:

Adam, that's an awesome find! Never heard of it before.

Mothersbaugh might be prolific on TV but you gotta admit, the theme to Beakman's World was VERY cool.

I always wondered who wrote the score for "Popeye's Voyage: The Quest for Pappy"

Mothersbaugh also writes some great film scores, but I guess you spend so much time stacking the sidebar with crappy ads that you wouldn't know about that.

Mark didn't write the rugrats theme, his brother did.

from billboard.com:
Although no specific plans have been settled on, Casale says it "would be funny as hell" for Devo 2.0 to make an unannounced appearance at a regular Devo show at some point. "I think the greatest thing would be if they came out and did the exact same set we're about to do," he says with a laugh. "And then we come out and do it. I like that idea. By the time the audience sees us old guys, it's like, 'No! Bring back the kids!'"

Don't you see that Devo 2.0 is, while horrible, also potentially the most brilliant and subversive mind improvement programming tool the world has ever seen?
Think about it; the message of Devo imprinted on young, spongelike minds, eager for awesomeness...
Also, if it puts a couple of bucks in the pockets of our hard working Devonian, what's the harm.
It's like "Bob" says:
"MONEYMONEYMONEYMONEY!"

This is nothing more than a continuation of the fabulous running joke that is Devolution. I still love Devo and this fits right in with their original plan. Nothing is sacred not even Devo. I'm really old keep in mind, but this is similar to what PeeWee Herman did. He started with an adults only show in L.A. and then somehow ended up with a movie and a totally subversive kids show on network TV. This could play out the same way. I mean the website was playing "That's Good" which is about masturbation. Go Devo go!
