Dig For Fire: A Pixies Tribute

Scottish post-rockers and Zidane soundtrackers Mogwai will cover Pixies' "Gouge Away" on an upcoming tribute to the band, set for November 13th release on American Laundromat Records. The label's site confirms that They Might Be Giants, OK Go, J Mascis, John P. Strohm, The Rosebuds, and Joy Zipper are also on board for the covers album. More details to come, though the Mogwai and Mascis inclusion already rates this better than that Sgt. Peppers Lonely "All-Star" jam. We'll get ya a listen ASAP.

Best Pixies cover ever? Go.

Surfer Rosa is easily their best cover. Boobies.

The Get Up Kids - Alec Eiffel

Oddly, I was listening to that 1998 indie-rock Pixies tribute album last night. I'd forgotten how lackluster most of it was.

I thought the "Where Is My Mind" tribute album was pretty good. Reel Big Fish covering "Gigantic" and The Siren Six! doing "The Holiday Song" have held up for me.

From what I remember, that album didn't receive a lot of fanfare upon its release back in 1999 (has it really been that long?).

Ironically enough, my joy of The Get Up Kids is what first turned me on to the Pixies. I was like "This is the best song The Get Up Kids have ever written... wait... what the heck are the Pixies!"

That's not irony, Zayin. That's not irony at all.

Bowie's cover of Cactus is pretty cool.
I also like Grant-Lee Phillip's cover of Wave of Mutilation, but that might get me beat up around here.

Letters to Cleo recorded a great version of "Debaser" for the 1999 tribute album, but it didn't make it on. I don't know if anyone still remembers or cares about them, but it would be great if it was released finally.

Can anyone think of a tribute album that wasn't mostly a collection of thrown together bands phoning in their performances? Oooo...and let's not forget Sheryly Crow doing "D'yer M'ker" from "Encomium"!

I remember listening to that first Pixies tribute album when it came out, while working at the record store...

Coworker, after about the third song: "Can you please take this off? The Pixies are one of my favorite bands ever, and this is really ruining it for me."

Weezer's "Velouria." It was the last recording the band made (from '98-'99) before they started to suck. It manages to sound perfectly like Weezer, as though it should be a Pinkerton b-side, while still remaining reverent and true to the original. Kudos, RivCo.
