DJ Mixes Usually Suck, But...

Leave it to Erlend Øye of Kings Of Convenience (Norway's answer to Simon & Garfunkel) to reinvent the genre.

1. Jurgen Paape - So Weit Wie Noch Nie
2. Erlend Oye - Sheltered Life (Remix)/Fine Night (Acapella)
3. Cornelius - Drop (Kings of Convenience Remix)
4. Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better
5. Erlend Oye - Radio Jolly – Jolly Music/Prego Amore (Acapella)
6. Alan Braxe & Fred Falke - Rubicon
7. Avenue D - 2D2F
8. The Rapture - I Need Your Love
9. Erlend Oye - Lattialla Taas – Uusi Fantasia/Venus (Acapella)
10. Erlend Oye - 2 After 909 – Justus Kohncke/Intergalactic Autobahn (Acapella)
11. Erlend Oye - The Black Keys Work (Phonique Remix)
12. Jackmate - Airraid
13. Royksopp - Poor Leno (Silikon Soul Remix) / Erlend Oye - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (Acapella)
14. Skateboard - Metal Chix / Erlend Oye - Always On My Mind (Acapella)
15. Ricardo Villalobos - Dexter
16. Minizza - Winning a Battle, Losing The War
17. Morgan Geist – Lullaby / Erlend Oye - A Place In My Heart (Acapella) / Ada - Luckycharm / Erlend Oye - Intuition (Acapella)

I'm sort of sick of the Smiths-tronica jawns floating around these days, but Erlend does a nice job with "There Is A Light" on that Royksopp semi-mashup. Better than Schneider TM's version. Minizza's funky take on KOC's "Winning A Battle" could pass as a Nintendo soundtrack. Another highlight is Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's "Rubicon." Never heard of 'em before, but this retro jam will have you shaking your ass like it's summer '82 and you've just done a line with Madonna in the Danceteria bathroom. Buy the album here.

Alan Braxe & Fred Falke - "Rubicon"

If you're not familiar with Mr. Øye's previous work (or you hate throbbing baselines), check out the first Kings of Convenience disc. It's a complete 180 from the DJ stuff: beautiful harmonies and acoustic finger picking from two Norwegian uber-nerds. Eliza Jane and I saw the duo perform at Angel Orensanz Foundation a few years ago. It was such an incredible venue ... we decided we wanted to get married there. Not surprisingly, it's way too expensive. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick got married there. They have lots of money.

For you New Yorkers, Erlend will be DJing at APT on Tuesday.

Braxe and Falke are sort of "charter members" of the French house/ disco scene (Daft Punk, DJ Falcon, Etienne de Crecy and all that). You might also like "Intro (Runnin')" (which has a sample from The Jets!) and "Love Lost" (which sort of has that great 80s vibe from "Rubicon"). On a more disco-esque tip, there's a not-that-great remix of ABBA's "Mamma Mia" out there on slsk that was allegedly done by Braxe. I'll be glad to dropload any of these to you--it's the least one can do to thank you for all of the great links and downloads.

This cd follows a somewhat unique approach...Reinventing the DJ mix? Hardly.

It's strange that you simultaneously praise Erlend while bashing a genre that he is obviously into: dance music. I don't think anyone in that track listing would appreciate the comment "DJ Mixes Usually Suck", considering most of them ARE DJs.

Portland songwriter Justin Ringle's evocative vocal twang and sharp lyricism are at the center of Horse Feathers' bedroom Americana. The band's second album House With No Home, which follows 2006's Words Are Dead, finds Ringle's vision fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist/composer...
