this may have been useful 10 years ago, but i don't think anybody is scared of electronic music anymore. pretty much all pop stuff is more "electronic" than anything from the big beat explosion of '97.

electronic is more of a method than a genre anyway.

Can we PLEASE ditch the "Electronica" moniker for good? This isn't Tower Records in the late 90's anymore. Let's just use "Electronic". I do agree with the Dabrye rec, though I think two/three is better.

I hate any reference To Jazz in dance music. It just doesn't make sense to anyone who knows anything about Jazz music. If it's doesn't have strong elements of Improvisation it ain't jazz

I don't really know why anyone would want to get into indie rock at this moment in time either, but dancing around to Daft Punk seems even wussier to me (what with all the glow sticks and the hair gel and the gays on ecstasy and all). Although there's no electronica equivalent of Sufjan Stevens that I know of, so maybe you've got a point there.

Regarding your first comment, I agree that Daft Punk blows. However, you can't really move further away from wussy than this:

As for the electronic equivalent of Sufjan Stevens, how bout Sufjan Stevens? He DID release Year of the Rabbit, which was pretty much an electronic endeavor....

My point was that Sufjan Stevens sucks and that wusses like him are ruining indie "rock." Your point suggests (to me) that maybe it's time for him to go ruin another genre full-time.

I'm thinking eventually he'll just fade into NPR-land.

Though I find this whole exercise dubious at best (why can't someone just sample the seminal "electronica" albums/artists to see if they like it?), I have to take exception to the jazz comment above. Improvisation may be one element of jazz, but I don't think it defines the genre. There are plenty of standard "jazz" tunes that are fully composed and contain as much improv as a pop or rock song.

And hey, I just recently started exercising again, and even though I don't like electronica much most of the time, it makes great music to motivate and allow you to zone out to. So sue me if I'm about 10 years too late to the Chemical Bros., Daft Punk, and Basement Jaxx wagon.

for all those daft haters, i've got this to say:

guy-manuel de sixteen names-o's guitar solo in 'digital love' makes the fag in ALL of you just a little sadder.

The concept of "ruining Indie Rock" seems as silly to me as the "Electronica" moniker.

And, for the record, I think you need to like a little more than just "Prog/Jam" to like Aphex Twin. Like maybe paint-thinner. And teddy bears.
