Guess what, millions of people from both New York and California voted for Bush. Just because you live in either of those places, doesn't mean you're in some blissful, hermetically-sealed zone of "progressive" enlightenment. You may want to talk to those millions and see what they think about your secession plans.

Okay. This is all. I really do sympathize though, in all honesty, because if my candidate had lost, I would have not been able to wake up and go to class today (U of Miami is so liberal; it was like a funeral on campus today).

The election is over, get over it. I live in ultra liberal Manhattan and even here about 20% of voters voted for Bush. I voted for Kerry but here you could have voted libertarian, New York always goes democrat. Well not always, but more so than any other state. That is silly to expect the worse for the next 4 years. At least let him(Bush) prove you wrong first for these coming 4 years.

I'm so shocked. All this hard work, all this time invested, and yet we were so close. Obviously not close enough. Tell everyone to vote, but don't educate them on the issues let's see how far that gets us.

I have been so active with this election. Calling my friends up to vote, telling them to read the ammendments carefully before voting. Showing them the importance of this election and importance of voting period. I cannot even begin to tell you how many of my friends and even co-workers the day of, had no clue what the ammendments were let's not even go to the fact they had no idea what the fuck they were voting for.

The wording of the ammendments were one of the issues I had with this ballot. It's almost as if you had no freakin' clue unless you previously researched them, what the FUCK you were voting for or against. I'm so pissed. Disappointed. peace everyone.

My cousin who works for the government of my native country, Portugal, called me and basically told me the same as what someone stated above about the laughing part. However, her exact quote was "Oh my God! America has no idea what position they just put themselves in. Europe is in shock."

Thomas Paine once said:

"Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer."

Zelda:

America is the country of exceptionalism. America has an association with every country on earth in one way or another, especially with European countries. Therefore, U.S. elections ultimately affect, mostly, Europe. Furthermore, the United Nations is mostly lead by European countries (imperatively England, Spain and France). Most important, America without allies, without the support of the United Nations, will not halt or moderate the situation in Iraq.

Secondly, I wouldn't refer to opinions as "doomsday prophocies." Three people of importance in my life are in Iraq, and guess what, I'm scared for them-- especially when they cry to me over the phone. And not because they're scared; but because they are outraged. Behind opinions there are reasons for their formulations.

Zelda, you're a classic example why people hate the US. It has nothing to do with 'freedom', it's the ugly combination of arrogance and ignorance that makes people angry. The fact that your country has now endorsed GW's foreign policies means that all Americans have taken responsibility for his overseas adventures. Enjoy.
Brian, nice WWII call, no one ever gets sick of hearing that. If it wasn't for Pearl Harbour, Cheney's forefathers would have been happy to profiteer off the war until the US was the only country left speaking English.
Really, when Putin and Berlusconi are the first to congratulate the US people on making the 'right choice' (BTW, a diplomatic no-no), even neocons like Zelda and Brian should stop cleaning their guns long enough to wonder what it means.

For heaven's sake, Brian, read a history book. The US did not save Europe from Germany. The US joined at the end of the war when Germany was on the way out after the Soviet Union joined the war years earlier. The Soviet Union lost 20 million people fighting Germany. We lost 300,000 fighting Japan, mostly. If you want to do that stupid "60 years ago we did something good, so don't criticize our irresponsible global dominance now" thing, argue that because of us, Indonesia isn't speaking Japanese.

I shouldn't further dignify Brian's post with a response, but...

"Every country in the world makes money off of US business interests."

More accurately, US business interests make money off every country in the world. We own most of the world's wealth, not vice versa.

"We are the most powerful nation on Earth and because Bush was re-elected that is not going to change."

The comment of US being the lone superpower amuses me and reminds me of my father raising me to beware of China being the next superpower. If we keep barreling forth blinded by this hegemony as we are, US won't realize before it's too late; China is a fifth of the world, making allies with other countries that are considering lifting their weapons-sale ban- will we be the next Rome falling to the Visigoths?

Yes I'm scared, damn scared for our society where change is neccessary but has proven so difficult to attain. I headed the Rock the Vote campaign at Baylor, thirty minutes from dubya's ranch...Bush country. Yet I was surprised at the number of people I talked to that recognized Bush's faults and the need for change; "there should be no issue of who to vote for" so many said. I don't want to make doomsday proclamations and I don't want to leave this country; I can't fool myself into thinking that positive change isn't happening. In some sense, yes Europe and other mentionable countries, such as Asia, et cetera, do make money off the U.S. However, America makes more money off other countries than anyone actually thinks. There is an American consulate in almost every country on the face of this earth. That alone speaks tones concerning America's exceptionalism. That is beside the point, though the point is; UN and NATO exist for a reason. I'll even go further to say -- my main concern--aside from the war in Iraq-- is Bin Laden. And I will not rest until that man is caught. He murdered 5,000 people, but we decided to go after Hussein, at the time, because apparently he had "weapons of mass destruction" that could have been accessed by Bin Laden. News flash people, if that were REALLY the case, NATO --one of the most powerful leadership organizations in the world-- would have gone into Iraq stomping behind America. But that wasn't the case and they knew it, and refused to support Bush.

Brian: With all due respect, since you don't seem to understand why America is greatly connected to Europe, perhaps you should read a history book, AND, find out who NATO is. Polls show that Americans are deplorably misinformed about the affairs of other countries. Surprise!

So, say what you will concerning the pessimism of the people, myself included. Until NATO is involved, which will most likely not occur, because already Europe is claiming distance from Bush's re-election, Iraq, revolt in Iraq and terrorism is not even going to get slightly better. Has everyone forgotten March 11, 2003? It's only going to get worse.

SUMwon, I agree with you.

But I gotta say...we asked for it. Look at the state of our political alternatives to Bush. PATHETIC, people. Don't tell me you voted for Kerry because you thought he'd make a great president. We all voted against Bush. And that's just not going to inspire a nation...remember how hopeful and psyched we were when Clinton came on the scene? And John Edwards? Give me a break. HE was supposed to be our Great Southern Hope? The man sounded about as sincere as Jerry Falwell. Go ahead - tell me when you watched the Democratic candidate debates that you pointed your finger at either Kerry or Edwards and said "There - there is the leader of our country."

I'll fully admit that I'm still bitter that Howard Dean wasn't chosen as the candidate. He had a vision, he had a plan, and he had the stones that it would have taken to get the nation behind him. But NooooOOOOOooo....he wasn't pretty enough for Ted Kennedy and all the rest of the white tower Democrats behind the scenes. So fine! Hope you're happy, Ted!

Look at the numbers. That 51% of the popular vote went to a complete wing-nut, shows there is something wrong. That the Senate, House, and Congress majority is Republican shows that something is wrong. That 11 states could vote to ban extending basic human rights to gays, shows there is something WRONG. And it's not with the Republicans or the people who vote for them - it's us. No one has created a viable alternative to the current administration, and we can't get our act together enough to explain our beliefs in an effective enough way that will make sense to the average gun-toting American.

In 2000, some local 'zine columnist said that she was almost glad Bush won, because she thought that we all had gotten complacent, and now we would wake up and get to work on the Democratic party and things would be different in 2004. Well, it didn't happen. I sincerely hope that this will be enough of a slap in the face to us. We don't have to sit around and passively wait for Bush to mess up the nation. We can get involved ourselves, or get more involved if we already were. Speak up, write letters, yell as loud as we can. There's plenty of local stuff going on every day that matters just as much as this.

This does not have to be as depressing as it seems. This is a clear call to arms. I wish us all the best of luck.

I, for one, made calls for 2 hours a night every weeknight for 3 weeks to Florida and Pennsylvania. The problem is that, since everyone assumes that everyone else is doing nothing, noone does anything. That's the state of the nation today: mass complacency. Most people (I'm fucking looking at you, Bush-voters) don't care enough to figure out the nuances of the modern world and instead fall back on the rigidly defined dichotomies that are provided to them. The Republicans figured this out with Reagan and have succeeded once again by catering to the average American's inherent laziness.

Spike, the point is that ALOT of people DID get out and tried to get the message out. There was a great groundswell both before the Democratic primary and the presidential election. Dean lost and Kerry lost. That's what makes it so heartbreaking. People made calls, people attended rallys, went out to protest, created message boards and blogged and gave money. And it didn't work. GOTV? Vote or Die? Rock the Vote? All that and it was still disappointing.

The youth vote doesn't affect the election enough.

Minority voting is being split because of religion.

People thought new voters must mean people outraged about Bush, but it might have been people outraged about the gay marriage issue.

Democrats are still being wishy-washy and not standing up for things. The whole campaign was centered around: how much does the party have to comprimise to get elected? It's not working.

Any candidate that the Democrats put up there, the conservatives are going to say is too far left. So why are we trying to pick a candidate that's as centrist as possible?

one of the problems with the democratic party ( atleast in the South) is that they expect and call on the African American community to support them but when an African American candidate emerges they do not support them. Look at the 5th Congressional District race in northern Louisiana. They had an incumbent democrativ congressman who switched over to the Republican party at the last minute which left two republicans in the race and one democrat, a young African American woman. She got no help from the Democratic party and the recently elected female democratic Governor did not even know her name. The message they send out is support us and we will help you, just don't try to be one of us. Pretty sad. Change has to come from within.

It's all just fartin' in the wind.

wacky neocons post on stereogum because ashlee simpson lip-synching is more important than reading up on world events and US foreign policy. seriously, that's the reason why so many people voted for bush. apart from being brainwashed by a sensationalist media, most people prefer entertainment to being informed. this isn't a criticism of you, steve, i love your site but that's just the facts.

and come on, nothing's changed since Clinton? When Clinton left, the federal budget had a surplus of five trillion dollars. because of Bush's war and ill-informed tax cuts, you're now in deficit of 270 billion which will increase to 2.3 trillion by 2008 if his policies continue. Bush just lost 7 TRILLION DOLLARS! congratulations, bushists, for pretty much mortgaging americans' future.

Some of the comments posted here made me write this one. Especially from Zelda and people who think like her. "Why do we care about your election?" I am sure it is hard for these clearly uneducated people to understand that some people actually are interested in foreign affairs, because they affect them.

And all of you "America our superpower", wake up. You do not live in "A world of its own." Just like every other country, America is affected by things that happen around the world. Not only that, but is affected by the countries where people use camels for transportation. And that all brings us to one thing, oil. It is the only reason your newly elected president got into war with Iraq. I hope nobody believes the reason is to free Iraqi people. Otherwise, why does Bush not free North Korean people? And their leader has clearly admitted the possession of WMD.

The following statement is also amusing. "If it wasn't for us most of you people in Europe would be speaking German right now." And that probaly said a fool whose ancestors came from Europe. Do not forget who real native americans are.

What I can not belive is how America re-elected someone who has clearly lie to its people, expoited the 9/11 tragedy to gain votes. Was he so persuasive in debates, did he address his nation so well, even though someone else writes his speeches and still he seems illiterate? Or did he just raised a threat level few times? Some say because he is so determined. But is that a good quality if someone is constantly wrong?

In last for years some Americans lost their lives because of him, but you all lost a part of your freedom. I hope things will not get worse.

"and if the proverbial shoe was on the other foot how would you feel ? would it still be fair because your side won?"

The shoe WAS on the other foot 4 years ago. Unfortunately, a conservative Supreme Court and some Repulican election officials in Florida stole the election.

Transcript 1: 5:16 AM Washington Time

Kerry: Hello? This is Kerry! Helllooo....

Transcript 2: 5:20AM Washington Time

Bush: Phone Tag! You're it!

Transcript 3: 5:25AM Washington Time

Kerry: Hello?
Bush: Can you hear me now?
Kerry: Hahahhaha!
Bush: Can you hear me now? Hello?
Kerry: AHhhahahaha!
Bush: Can you hear me now?
Kerry: Wait, are you serious? I thought you were doing the "can you hear me now" guy.
Bush: No I was actually asking, can you hear me now, I get no reception in here.
Kerry: Oh yah, I can hear you now.
Bush: I'm kidding fool! I WAS doing the verizon guy!
Kerry: AHhaahhaahahhahaha!
Bush: Seriously, what's up.
Kerry: I'm just calling to---
Bush: Can you hear me now?
Kerry: I'm just calling to congratulate you for running a successful campaign. Good work Mr. President.
Bush: Hey you didn't do so bad yourself Mr. I had everybody in Hollywood campaigning for me!
Kerry: Yes well... I just want you to know I am returning my copy of Farhenheit 9/11. Honestly, back to Blockbuster it goes.
Bush: I appreciate that. Are you sure you are not going to change your mind on this whole concession thing ?
Kerry: I am not sure maybe, maybe not. I think you'll also appreciate the fact that Michael Moore was just found in a dumpster behind Marie Calendars eating Cheesecakes.
Bush: Why would I appreciate that?
Kerry: I dunno, don't you hate the guy? I'm just talking out of my ass at this point.
Bush: Hey, were you watching the elections last night?
Kerry: Yeah, they were like... ON EVERY CHANNEL!
Bush: I KNOW, RIGHT!??! WINGED AMERICA!
Kerry: Huh?
Bush: Nothing.
Kerry: My god, I'm looking at one of those electoral map thingies, and literally every state between Arizona and Virginia is red. I just had to win ONE state south of the bible belt.
Bush: Yeah...
Kerry: Seriously! If i just won arkansas or georgia or florida or iowa or missouri or... JESUS I didn't even win Nevada!
Bush: Yeah, any state that gets above 90 degrees you pretty much lost.
Kerry: and any state that gets colder than 20 degrees you lost.
Bush: Nice comeback, fag.
Kerry: What's that?
Bush: Oh i was just telling Laura, that she was wearing a Nice Comebacked... Bag.
Kerry: Oh. Oh i see.... Hey George...
Bush: Yeah John...
Kerry: Do you ever think that maybe one day, when we grow up... that ... WE'LL kiss like our moms and dads do?
Bush: Like... you and me? Kissing eachother?
Kerry: Maybe... is that what you wanted me to mean?
Bush: Maybe...
Kerry: *leaning in*
Bush: Whats that noise, It sounds like lips running up against a phone receiver
Kerry: Thats just... static... listen i gotta go.

*quick hang up, dial tone*

Kerry: Can you hear me now good friend... can you hear me now....?

Thankfully, it's not being said that Osama's last message was translated inaccurately. He actually has stated that he will look at each individual state separately, promising not to harm the "blue" states who did not vote for Bush, but will not guarantee safety to the "red" Pro-Bush states. From this point on, I am wearing a Smurfette costume, just in case there is any confusion regarding NJ.

Gas is $2.25??? Where is that? Here in San Francisco, it's $2.57...

This whole thing is just mind boggling, because it just makes no sense. Americans are typical for voting against their interests. Why would you vote for a President who upholds allowing corporations to take money out of your pocket (giving them tax breaks puts the rest of the tax burden onto the rest of us, in case you didn't know) by letting them avoid paying their share of taxes?

Why would anyone who's lost their job, and doesn't have any skills to get another adequately paying job anytime soon (without getting retrained or reeducated) vote for a candidate who allows corporations to send jobs overseas without a second thought?

Why is it so important to prevent gay people from marrying each other? I mean, does that really hurt anyone else? Will that take money out of your pocket? Will it take food off of your plate? What business is it of anyone's if two people of the same sex want to marry each other? Why is this an important issue? By the way, I am a lesbian, and I don't agree with the gay marriage issue... but I don't feel that people should be prevented from getting married if they choose to, that's none of my business, and it definitely is none of the government's business.

In this time of senseless and needless war (yes, yes, 5000 people died on 9/11, but why aren't we looking for Osama bin Laden????) why are people ignoring the fact that we have American soldiers and Iraqi civilians dying everyday, over something that Bush cannot seem to explain with credible reasoning? And most of the people that voted for Bush have family and friends fighting in Iraq... I think it is a slap in the soldiers' faces to be ignorant about the true situation and facts of the war in Iraq.

And to those people who keep bringing up WWII, you need to read more history, because you obviously didn't understand that little bit that you vaguely remember about that one war.

Americans don't seem to understand that we are not the only people in the world. Terrorism is thriving now, because of Bush and his tunnel vision. And to say that you voted for Bush because he makes you feel more secure is just a bunch of bullshit. If he's giving away all of these huge tax cuts, what or who is going to pay for all of this extra security? Who is going to pay for the war? The other countries of the world won't... why should they, when we keep shouting the message that they dont' matter?

No one can have their cake and eat it, too. You can't have a war on terror, give Iraqis democracy, fight the nasty, evil gays that want to get married and start families, and let Bush give ridiculous tax breaks to rich people and corporations without paying for it somehow...

There is this thing called the "national deficit", that can't be fixed by Alan Greenspan just magically moving the decimal point back and forth at a whim.

And you wonder why people want to move out of the country?

the fact that you are so ill informed is what made me laugh. The times we are in are far from humorous only because we are in a new age where we are under attack for our beliefs and what we stand for.If Al Gore had been President we still would have been attacked by Osama. If Kerry were elected you still count on future attacks. The terrosists hate our lifestyle and what America is built on. As long as the USA stands we will have enemies. George W Bush just happens to want to do something about it before the next threat appears. Say what you want.

Sorry guy, we're under attack for using way more than our share of the world's resources and condemning a good chunk of the planet's population to grinding poverty in the process. I agree with you that 9/11 would have occurred whether Gore had been president (fyi, putting words in my mouth doesn't really add to your arguement, dumbass), but saying that the terrorists just hate our lifestyle and what we stand for is so wrong it's silly. Have you ever hated someone's lifestyle enough to go crash a plane into a building? It's more like class warfare than some vague ideological struggle. Not that you'd ever figure that out if your worldview consisted solely of Fox News and Bush administration talking points.
You.
Fucking.

It's patriotic to be patriotic. But it's not advantagous to be blind to the truths that blatantly inundate the country you are living in. Reality is becoming a virtue. News flash: The government lies. Example; the Pentagon Papers case. I will not be supportive of a government that lies to the people that financially supports its country. William Rehnquist, who during the Pentagon Papers ordeal was an Assistant U.S. Attorney General and NOW is a Supreme Court Justice, went out of his way to cover the government's ass, and this is who we have leading the US Supreme Court (he's leaving, however, he had been in the Supreme Court since Reagan.) Wake up. History is repeating itself.

"The terrosists hate our lifestyle and what America is built on"...

I thought the terrorists hate us because of our involvement with Irael and oh, a few other minor dinky world political stances of ours concerning the Middle East.

Can we at least agree that one should not just accept a bunch of dramatic canned speeches by a politician as gospel? These people are running nations. They are, shall we say, the ultimate CEOs. They do not give a fart about the American Way, or whether this country was built on freedom or Pop-Tarts. They say what is necessary to win the support of the masses. Imagine you're playing Warcraft or Civilization or Axis and Allies. It's about strategy, money, and power - nothing else.

I'm a native New Yorker born and raised on Long Island and currently living in Manhattan. The New Yorkers who I know of that admitted that they voted for Bush were my cousin and another cousin's friend cause they are total security moms and they brought into that whole idea that if Kerry were president and there would be terror attacks all the time and Bush would prevent terror attacks and if there every was another one he would know what to do. I'm guessing that the NYers who voted for Bush voted for him for that reason, which I think is really sad.

And of course I heart Barack, Illinois can join the new nation of The North East/West Coast ville cause not only is Illinois the home of Barack but also Oprah! We love Barack and Oprah!

It sounds as though madskrillz did get worked in the past few days. And how is that a bad thing?? I think it's a really good thing. When everyone is talking about voter apathy, we need a lot more people to get worked up. And we need people to listen to what the other side is saying. Both sides make some valid points (though the valid points of the repubs are few and far between). I think this is precisely the WRONG time to lighten up and "start healing" because more often than not that "healing" just means paying more attention to the NBA and watching the Oscars and trying to forget about politics. Then four years from now half of the population wakes up bleary eyed, to two more less-than stellar candidates and has to choose the lesser evil.

Who said that was name calling? Based on what you wrote I could only assume that you are, in fact, a fucking moron. My assumption is bolstered by the fact that you couldn't find a way to disprove my arguements and instead asserted that you're right just because you won (and unless you make $250,000 a year, you didn't really win anyways). Case closed.
