Extra Extras

What's with all the Anne Frank jokes on the premium channels?

Weeds Episode 3 (SHO)
DOUG WILSON (Kevin Nealon): "It's like Amsterdam, only better, because you don't have to visit the Anne Frank House and pretend to be all sad and stuff."

Extras Episode 1 (HBO)
ANDY MILLMAN (Ricky Gervais): "Kate Winslet talking dirty to Anne Frank and Joseph Goebbels - just a normal day."

Anyway, I did enjoy Ricky's new TV series (no, we don't have to compare everything to the UK Office). It has a nice old Yusuf Islam-penned theme song:

Cat Stevens - "Tea For The Tillerman" (MP3)

Watch a hilarious clip from last night's episode here (QT).

Next week, Ben Stiller guest stars as the dick that he is:

BEN: And who are you?
ANDY: Nobody.
BEN: What?
ANDY: Nobody.
BEN: Exactly. And who am I?
ANDY: Either Starsky or Hutch, I can never remember.
BEN: Was that supposed to be funny?
ANDY: You tell me, you were in it.
Anyone got a torrent of The O.C. parody that was on The Simpsons premiere? I think the Stereogum readers would enjoy that...

that is weird that they are showing Extras in a different order than they did in England. The Ben Stiller one was the debut i believe

Extras was good, but Curb Your Enthusiasm kind of sucked. I even liked season four of Curb, but last night it just occurred to me how formulaic the show has become.

Speaking of the O.C., is it me or was there a glimpse of a right teet during the sex scene?? Can someone verify this?

yeah, keith, i noticed that too, the ben stiller episode was the debut on BBC.

and yeah. curb has fallen completely into a formula.. right when the mentioned larry sandwich, i knew he would make a comment about it, lose it to another jewish guy (hoped it wouldn't be richard lewis...but alas. yeah.), then get it back in a strange way.

the show is just terrible.

yeah what up with showing them in different order? the kate winslet one is "stronger" than the others, but if usa shows them out of order you will never really get to see the progression of him struggling to get his own thing out to tv and his developing relationship with his female co-worker - totally ruins it and that is pretty bad, since this is definitely no "office". way to go usa tv.

It was OC parody night on Fox last night, as there was also a nice little jab at it in the Family Guy as well, pretty funny, it came from Stewie.

agreed -- there's a story arc to the Extras episodes. It won't make as much sense, or be as funny, since certain jokes throw back to earlier episodes. My guess is that the Kate Winslet is the funniest, and least british of the them. The Ben Stiller episode isn't especially funny.

Well, according my friend over in the UK, the Stiller episode was originally intended to be epsiode two, but to be more welcoming for US audiences, was moved to the front. My friend was rather surprised when I mentioned Winslet was on first. No idea why the switch, though, other than Winslet's episode being funnier than the Stiller.

All hearsay, though; I didn't press him for sources.

the ben stiller episode isnt funny??? the scene with the shoe is one of the greatest things gervais has written.. YOU DUDES ARE TRIPPING.

and there's no real story arc.. as long as they end with the patrick stuart episode all is good. him and the girl have the same sort-of flirty relationship throughout the season.
