Factory Girl Defaming Dylan?
If you were pumped about the release of the forthcoming Edie Sedgwick biopic Factory Girl, about the Andy Warhol-protegé's '60s-It Girl days and later drug abuse and suicide, you're part of a group that doesn't include Bobby D or Lou Reed -- and you may not want to buy advance tix just yet. Page Six reports:
BOB Dylan wants to send "Factory Girl" to the glue factory - charging the upcoming Edie Sedgwick biopic falsely suggests he was responsible for the Andy Warhol ingenue's suicide.Sienna Miller is playing Sedgwick, with Guy Pearce as Andy Warhol. You won't find a Bob Dylan character in the film per se, even though he grew close to Edie during their shared time at the Chelsea Hotel. Instead you'll see a character loosely-based on him named Billy Quinn (played by Hayden Christensen), primarily 'cause the film has the two romantically involved, which Dylan has always denied. Pop legend -- and the film -- has the two hooking up, Dylan leading Edie on but secretly marrying Sara Lowndes, and Edie going into a drug-and-depression induced tailspin thereafter, leading to her suicide at 28.The famed folkie's pit bull lawyers have fired off a letter to producers Bob Yari and Holly Wiersma, and screenwriter Aaron Richard Golub, demanding the flick not be released - or even screened - until they see it to determine if Dylan, who they say has "deep concerns," has been defamed.
Although the Quinn character is supposedly a composite of Dylan, Jagger, and Jim Morrison, Bob's lawyers say that the filmmakers are mistaken in thinking that "merely changing the name of a character or making him a purported fictional composite will immunize [them] from suit." Page Six says trailers show the Quinn character in harmonica brace and cap, so we say "case closed!"
Meanwhile the film has had four reshoots, has changed directors midstream, and has a girl famous for being cheated on by Jude Law as the lead actress. Promising, right? And to play the band that soundtracked those NYC days, Velvet Underground, the filmmakers have cast Weezer! When asked about the film, Lou Reed (played by Brian Bell) told the NY Daily News

There's no limit to how low some people will go to write something to make money.Factory Girl is hoping to come out 12/29. Don't hold your breath! Sadly, with Lou and Dylan getting so worked up, we sorta have to see it. (We'll just say it's to make fun of Sienna.)

I saw this movie a month or so ago at a preview screening and i can tell you it is one of the biggest pieces of shit i have ever seen. The acting is atrocious. Fortunately for me I knew about the players involved that they were talking about but if you have no idea then you will be lost from start to finish. As for the Quinn character, saying it is a composite of Jagger, Morrison and Dylan is one giant lie. It is so obviously meant to be Dylan even Stevie Wonder watching the film would not be fooled. Honestly, avoid this movie like the plague.

Wow, who is this supposed to appeal to? The dirty and dark under layer of the 60's portrayed by aging and irrelevant weezer and sienna miller? I just checked imdb, fucking jimmy fallon is in this? I can't think of anyone who exudes less cool than him. This film could have been amazing, if only Gus Van Sant or some other decent director had taken it on with a good cast.

OK I know its not out yet. I know it's going to suck. What slays me is that we ALL know that Edie died of a drug overdose (probably accidental) after she was married to Michael Post. But from the stills and trailers I've seen, that stoopid Sienna Miller has Edie's mannerisms DOWN, even though she is much harder looking and not nearly as graceful as Edie (compare the two Rhino photos, for example). I hate to give my money away to the people who screwed this movie up, but I'm going to be first in line when it opens just the same. Even a bad imitation of Edie is better than none at all. I wonder if Michael Post will see this movie....??

i totally agree with all the comments above - terrible actress playing edie and misleading story. ciao! manhattan movie is basically a mostly true autobiography of edie (based on the directors who knew her best). edie talks about her troubled childhood and her family history of depression that cause her downfall in drugs. factory girl is a disgrace! a pure fictional movie that misleads the public! i feel terrible for bob dylan and lou reed.

I saw it and it wasn't bad. Whether it was precise or not shouldn't be an issue. The film is suppose to be a fictionalized story of a woman in the sixties who was loved by many and who was beautiful, rich and famous. The movie is meant to make people remember or even to those who weren't around or aware to be inspired by her. The movie moved me emotionally. If people want to know facts they can do research.
