Family Guy Takes On "Take On Me"
I admit I'm the last guy in the blogosphere to give props to Family Guy. My DVR has been hijacked by Forensics Files and back-to-back Felicity (Eliza insists "best show ever").
But THIS I saw yesterday while Sarah was constructing Nightmare Of You singles. (FYI - ONE NOY single contains a free ridiculous present from Stereogum. E-mail me if you win.)
Anyway ... Family Guy parodies a-ha's Take On Me video with impressive accuracy.
What was up with the series finale of Felicity? She goes BACK IN TIME, then back to the future, but Elena's still alive?

I know...the ending of Felicity was retarded.

I think they filmed more for the Felicity finale than they could use and had to cut material, some of which was the explanation why Elena was alive at the end.
I think when Felicity went back in time she made Elena promise to leave new york for med school. When Felicity comes back to present time (with only the memories from her original trip through the present and her journey to the past), Elena is surprisingly alive because she had in fact left New York for med school, and thus could not have been in the post-undergrad car crash that killed her. In other words, felicity went back in time and changed the present, or something like that... i think. It's all too esoteric for me.
They address it in the dvd extras of season 4, though stereogum, if you want to check it. I can't remember the details or how convincing their explanation was, but it's there I think, as well as an explanation why they bothered with the whole time travel thing in the first place.
oh, and in other news, I need a life.

The family guy is lame. All references on that show are just that, references. With no humor included. At least the Simpsons has the guts to take a jab at the shit they mimic, rather than just mimic to show they can. Look at me, I'm Peter Griffin, I make a reference to Jake and the Fatman. Remember that, hipsters? Huh? Isn't remembering it funny? no? then why the hell is this show still on?
Seth McFarlane can go to hell and burn there for eternity and a day.

Oh, LL Cool F...after all, you know that, we're just talking away; I don't know what I'm to say, I'll say it anyway: today's another day, to find you shying away. I'll be coming for your love, okay?
I'm hunting high and low for proper knowledge of personal creative expression without resorting to popular culture comparisons. Hopefully to be gleaned from a guy named "LL Cool F."

i admit, i was pleasantly surprised when they did that A-Ha parody when i first saw the episode.
very random, and very amusing.

Are Eric and Bee one and the same? I once knew an Eric, but he was only half a Bee. (la dee dee 123, semi-carnally).
In other news, American Dad manages to be even less funny than the Family Guy.

And since when the hell is Jake and the Fatman popular??

I actually like the new season more than the first three. I think they were able to prove themselves to the powers that be and got more creative control. Now they're able to make the most tasteless jokes and get away with it, whereas before, they had to worry about FOX yanking them off the air.
Also, the dynamics between Stewie and Brian have changed, which I find pretty interesting.

Apparently, we have a misunderstanding of what the term "popular" means. Used in the context "popular culture," it does not hold the same connotation as the phrase, "LL Cool F is one of the most popular guys in the 10th grade."
Instead, it means "of or relating to the general culture"--not a localized culture, which one would perhaps find in homeroom. A generalized culture that, at one point in time, recognized the mutual talents of actors Joe Penny and William Conrad from 1987 to 1990.

felicity IS the best show ever!
and by the way, she never really went back in time. she had alcohol poisoning or something and it was all a dream. isn't that right?

rohallma - i'm pretty sure felicity did in fact go back in time when she was passed out from food poisoning or whatever. it's proven by the note elena has at the wedding (again a scene that i think was cut out). also, doesn't ben repeat something she said to him on her 'journey'? but again, my memory is sketchy so i could be wrong. i do think the time travel as 'real' thing is unclear because of the editing they had to do to get it down to an hour.

I like Family Guy a lot, which is why it pains me to see the general decline in quality. The a-ha parody, much like everything else that has been wrongly attributed to Family Guy's genius, was actually done many years ago on the Simpsons.

Wait, wait, wait...wait. Did she pick Noel or did she pick the other guy? I was all kinds of onboard for the first two seasons -I liked her haircut- but it all fell away when that English girl started talking, JJ Abrams' ass buddy got his nut chopped and I finally (yesss) got felt up by a boy. Help.
Thank you.

I love how the legacy Simpson's fans just can't let go (LL Cool F). Hey, I loved the Simpsons - and I know the Fam Guy will never reach it's iconic status, but really, the Family Guy is a hell of a lot funnier these days. Has anyone seen 'Stewie Griffin: the Untold Story' yet?
...Absolutely beautiful.

NOEL WAS NOT A DOUCHE!!!!!!!!!
you know, i really don't care that much...that whole time travel thing was over my head. it was so out of character for that show. except for that one stupid ass black and white episode where they get stuck in megan's box.
wtf?

'Felicity' was my best friend's TV crack. When they had the Ben or Noel cliffhanger, she drove around all summer with a 'BEN' sign in her car window. She also dressed as her for Halloween.
Oh, and Noel WAS a douche.

clashed-
Family Guy, Lois model ep, don't forget the Cookie Monster in re-hab. One of the funniest god damn things I've ever seen.
And of course, in the other Ep when he is consoling Cleveland, the flashback of Peter and his barbershop quartet telling the hospital patient he has AIDS. One of the most WRONG skits ever and at the same time one of the funniest.
And yes, hating to admit I watched Felicity as well (I was working for WB at the time), we all thought Noel was a douchebag.

TV nerd alert...
Felicity did warn Elena. She wrote her a letter telling her that she should go to med school somewhere other than NYC. They filmed the letter sequence but had to cut it for time. Personally, I think there was probably something else they could have cut considering this omission made the entire last part of the episode one big question of "why the hell is Elena there?" instead of "aw, Felicity is over, so sad" in my mind.
They never really explained whether or not Felicity really went back in time. When she woke up back in the future, it was revealed that she had a fever and it seemed to everyone like she was having some crazy dreams. I always kind of loved the back in time storyline, even though it was crazy. The show always had a witchcraft component -- Felicity and Ben got together for the first time because of Megan's spell.
Oh, and Family Guy rocks, but that "Take On Me" reference lasted for way too long. 30 seconds would have been plenty.

*everything* lasts too long on FG. And as for the Stewie mockumentary? Hello, the Simpsons did that 6 years ago. Behind the laughter.

Noel may have been a douche. But Leon was the man. He had highlights in his hair and leather pants... at the same time!

I too was far too obsessed with Felicity. However, I will never get over how mad I was that she did the whole cheating with a paper thing more than once. And of course, that she picked Ben. Man alive I loved Noel, enough that I still cant get over Garner leaving Foley. Yes, he is not his character, but I cant help it. Loved the Noel.

Your favorite show is FELICITY and you have the nerve to criticize FAMILY GUY? Are you serious? I mean, maybe if you liked a cool show, like Law & Order: SVU or Malcolm in the Middle, but you're throwing stones when your favorite show is FELICITY? WHAT?
And to all the Family Guy haters, if you don't find the show funny or you think it's just a random collection of obscure pop-culture references, you obviously haven't watched more than an episode or two. Of my top 20 favorite Family Guy quotes, only a few are what you'd call a "reference," but the great thing about the show is that they're still funny even if you don't know what the reference is. (See: Rocketman.)
I always get a feeling that the people who don't like Family Guy don't like it because they don't get the joke. They feel kind of left out of the loop. It's also that a lot of people just sort of naturally rebel against what they think everyone else sees as 'different' and 'cool.' Oh, Family Guy's gone mainstream, it's so 'bourgeois,' so pedestrian. Get over yourself. Stop trying to read more into the show than necessary. Just accept that it's funny. You can laugh at a vomit joke - nobody's going to think you've lost your 'street cred.'

All u guys are lame, family guy is above and beyond the Piece of shit the simpsons, I admitt the show was good in the old days, but know it is a shadow of its former self, its like an old dog u had and loved it pains you to see it struggling to live, trying to be funny as it once was, I just want to take it out to the back of the barn and shoot it in the head. And if all the references bothers u all, then you guys must be into sum stale comedy!
