First Impressions Of First Impressions

Many of you have probably heard some of the forthcoming Strokes release First Impressions Of Earth, and we wanna know what you think. Our server is still on the fritz, though, so if you're having trouble commenting, just enjoy this pic from last night's gig at ULU and check out a review here.

Random Senseless Acts Of Beauty nabbed the setlist.

(Insound's taking CD pre-orders that come w/ a free "Juicebox" 7".)

I've listened to the five leaked tracks quite a bit. I really dig them. I'm looking forward to First Impressions of Earth. The Strokes always put on a good live show. So, yeah, I'd say they're still cool.

They're definitely better than the better portion of the bands we're getting beaten over the head with these days.

Damn! That Pitchfork review of "Juicebox" was apparently devistating for the Strokes.

So I did my best trying to let "Juicebox" grow on me. At this point I think it's a lost cause. But "Other Side", "Razorblade", and "You Only Live Once" give me hope that the new album will be a good one. The Strokes have yet to let me down. I think their drive to create a cd that is markedly different from their last effort will make for some pretty terrible tracks (15 minutes, juicebox) but all in all, still leave room for mostly gems.

Pitchfork didn't need to bash "Juicebox" for it to be poorly recieved. It's bad. I like the Strokes and I will definitely listen to the new album even though my first impression of First Impressions was "Juicebox".

On the first two records, I could listen to almost every song dozens of times and still feel like it was doing something for me. With these songs, "You Only Live Once" was the only one that had that kind of replay value. "Juicebox" and "15 Minutes" didn't interest me after 3-4 listens, and "Razorblade" and "On the Other Side" bored me right away.

I'm going to agree with Steve and have faith that this album in its entirety will be a good listen, compared to one or two trick ponies that most new bands turn out to be. If anything I'm a fan of the Strokes' approach to making enjoyable pop music, as well as Julian's vocal choices. That's why I still care, anyway.

I try not to like the Strokes, but I can't help it. They do make music thats better than most out there right now. Besides, they started it all - how can they not still be cool???

Coolness kinda on a plateau right now. Feels like everyone's just "waiting" to feel other's reactions??? Reading recent articles about them, they appear at their happiest. But sometimes that can lead to complacency and not, well, creativity.

I'll still buy the CD when it comes out.

The Strokes have to be the coolest band out there, since 4000 other bands stole their looks and sound style.

We can't SAY we like them... cuz they are officially not cool... but sure... we all tap our feet... I have my favorite five that I'll always dance to :)

And have you seen that drummer? Fabrizio or something... names names..... a rose by any other....

Sure a lot of bands have "stolen" the Strokes style, but we have to be careful when we make that criticism - the Strokes are obviously massively indebted to a few key bands themselves.

The record has leaked - they seem to be trying all kinds of new ideas out, which I guess is good, but they don't spend a lot of time doing things that they're really good at and frankly, I'm finding it pretty boring so far.

they were only ever "cool" before everyone realized what daddy's silverspoon boys they were. they are about as cool as oasis. both bands have disposibly catchy pop tunes. but neither are "cool" or have any shred of indie cred.

the first strokes album was really good, he rocked out and actually screamed at times, but then they were labeled slacker rock... that's why the second album has no rocking out at all. they held back, its all flat sounding like interpol... juicebox is the most dynamic strokes song yet, i'm f-ing excited for this album... cause the music will actually change get louder and softer, and be interesting unlike the 2nd POS album

ps who cares if the strokes are cool... they have been known to make good music on occasion that's what matters

i think heart in a cage and vision of division are the best tracks on their new album...and i don't know why some of you dislike juicebox...it's different but i think it grows on you after a few listens!

i wish they'd taken the same songs to steve albini and recorded them in live hi-fi. or gotten some dance in their pants in the dfa studios. strokes w/keyboards and cowbell? i'm good with that. "i was there when julian casablancas decided to sing out of a peavey. i was at the first interpol practice."

i keep reading all sorts of hate about the new tunes, and i don't understand how you people hate 'juicebox' or have to let it grow on you. the first time i heard it, i was hooked and am curious to hear the rest of the album.

You Only Live Once and On The Other Side are fantastic, dynamic, orgasmic tracks. Razor Blade is a happy little ditty and Juicebox, while seemingly oppressive on first listen gets more melodic every time. 15 Minutes is kind of boring but it too will grow on ye.

Overall, CANT WAIT for the new album...face it you lamebrained hipsters; the Strokes rule, their first album killed, their second album is vastly underrated and this third album finally takes their sound into a new realm of production.

Some people think they're always right...

I wasn't really feeling them with Is This It, except for a few tracks, didn't like their follow-up, but I surprisingly like "Juicebox". Funny how people all of a sudden declare them "uncool" now, when they're actually trying to do something a little different. When everyone thought they were cool, I thought htey were overrated. Now they release something in which I no longer think they're a waste of space, they're the punchline of jokes now. The automatic shift made me wonder... what happened? Did Julian piss in someone's cornflakes? Makes me wonder. Like someone mentioned above, at least they sound better than quite a few of these "cool" bands out there now.

Based on the leaks, it sounds like First Impressions will be all over the place musically. Sounds like they're showing a lot more of their other influences (e.g. grunge, Blondie, etc.). I think it'll be very good with a chance to be great.

And 'Juicebox' sounds very much like 'Planet of Sound' by the Pixies.

i dunno what the problem is with juicebox, honestly, turn up the volume for christ sake. razorblade, favorite song so far, it's really infectious, most importantly the final repetition of the chorus. oh jules...neway, screw u guys, this album's f-in sweet.

FIOE is a brilliant record. "Ask me anything" is one of the best pop songs Ive heard all year. I only hope this record gets the promotion and attention it deserves. I too was a bit wary after hearing "juicebox" and learning that Gordon Raphael was dropped as the main producer. However, the band has made some interesting moves here and part of that seems to be a result of the new production techniques. Julian seems even more off key and flat than usual, but somehow its completely endearing...the rest of the band has definitely improved musically as well. Im quite excited and wish the strokes the best of luck with this release!

Overall the album is much more interesting than Room on fire. It's a very different strokes and I love it. I like how the indie elite still are afraid of thinking they're cool. Who ever said that CYHSY comment, I agree - julian is pushing it with his vocals but at least he can still sing...less than i can say for them

Great album, full of stand-out tracks ("Ask me anything", "Ize of the world", "You only live once", "Heart in a cage" to name a few). No at all like "Jucicebox", more like "the modern age" or "reptilia". Amazing production and playing. Extremely different from "Is this it", but to me it is their best work up to date. They're still the most exciting band in town.

I wonder if most of you are British, I tend to think this due to your wordchoice when you get annoyed. I find it quite amusing.

The album-- This is based off hearing the whole thing multiple times sober and not. I think the standout track is probably juicebox??? I am afraid so. Everyone is either hating it or loving it, (I am closer to not liking it), but once you give the whole record a play it becomes the stand out. This is not to say it is the best song. The most "strokes-ish" good song is you only live once. The only problem is its just as it is. A very good song that sounds like it would be a really good fit for room on fire. (perhaps a song that didn't make it the first time?)

Let's talk about the good. Vision of division is probably the "best song" on the record. It's quite annoying, and yet incredibally cathcy. It sounds literally like every cool part of their best songs all pieced together by someone who mixed it on drugs. It really does sound like drugs, a near overdose, and then you realize that you can do some more... Anyways...

Ask me anything.

It attempts to be under control.
I would like to ask them why they put this on the record and didn't save it for a B side? It starts off strong but just loses the momemt and becomes far too plain and shallow.

I hated razorblade but i cannot get it out of my head. It is too catchy for its own good.

The other songs? Well, as like room on fire, they eventually grow on you. Is it worth buying? Yes. It is very good musically, even though you can tell they tried really hard to make the music.

On the other side is the last notable song I will mention because it is really catchy if you can get past the chorus. It sounds like a negro spiritual. I just cannot buy it. When they do the soul thing it is very effective, I just think JC just pushes this one too far. I am from Milwaukee though, so that might influence my opinion. Plus I am biased against the musical director of my parents' church that totally brought in this baptist music to an ultra white burb community. I still hate that music.......

FIOE= 3.75 out of 5 (The Strokes can still do what they do well, but would rather do somthing else instead.)

How the hell are The Strokes indie? they've never released an album on an indipendant record company.

Clearly none of you know what 'indie' is. It's not a genre. It's when a band hasn't been signed to a big record company and are releasing there songs using there own money. It has many types of music from punk, emo, alternative, rap, rnb, metal and so on. There is no 'indie' sound.

There's no such thing as 'indie' credibility, being signed to a big record company is every 'indie' bands dream. I don't see how The Strokes could lose 'indie cred' for completing there dream.

Great Album by the way. Ize of The World

I keep alternating between loving this and being really put off by it. I LOVED the first two records from the get-go - this one is frustrating because I love it one day and then hate it the next! But one truth is that The Strokes are still one of my favorite bands because their music is more fun and addictive to listen to than SO many bands in rock history. They make other bands' music seem boring. The lyrics on this one bother me at times because he sounds so NEGATIVE, but the music (guitars, drum, bass) are very well put-together and they play so well together. I like the departure and change in production, and with time I believe I'll come to really enjoy this record.

Well it is really hard to figure this one out. I think they've grown musically but Julians singing gets a bit boring sometimes, but mostly I like the way he sings. A standout and my fave is Ask Me Anything. It really different from anything else they've done before. Also You Only Live Once is really great. Juicebox is really awsome to. I don't understand the people not liking this. If they had done something like Is This It or Room On Fire people would have been complaining about the lack of experimental stuff and that they haven't generated anything new since Is this it. So I actually love this album and I know it will grow with the time. Well I really like this album. Hope you'll like it as much as me.
Forget about all this coolness thing and just listen to the music.
And at last. I'm sorry about my english but I'm from Denmark.
