Friday Live Covers (Medicated Geniuses Edition)

Ben Gibbard - "Thriller"
I know I posted this one before, but Cameron alerted me that last week's NME (Streets cover) printed the URL! So, here you go British fanboys: Death Cab's lead Cutie doing a morose MJ tribute. An apropos addition to today's impending media circus.

They Might Be Giants - "Caroline No"
A pretty faithful take on the Pet Sounds closer. It's off the Johns' new EP Indestructible Object. Haven't listened to TMBG since John Henry; this track makes me wonder if I've been missing out?

thx for posting these! i saw TMBG at the barsuk Records showcase at SXSW this year -- they are in great form, and the new songs are promising. also, the kids were totally crazy for them. amazing to see usually cool and collected hipster kids get silly at a show.

TMBG's last full length was very good -- but cursed with a very unfortunate release date: 9/11/2001.

right-- mink car was pretty good, with collabos with m.doughty, which was nice. I wouldn't rush out and buy it, but if you got a friend that wants to burn it, don't object.

at the risk of coming off as part of the tmbg crowd that owns several dice with many more than six sides, i'd have to say that there's a lot there in the band's post-john henry discography. factory showroom has their cover of cub's 'new york city', and how could you not love a song called 'xtc vs. adam ant'?

i agree. most of TMBG catalog is great. you may not need the kid's record, but you'll do well with just about everything else.

that documentary, "gigantic," is a good watch as well. you can see just about every person involved with NPR go crazy over the band.

I have some free iTunes I need to cash in today. Any song suggestions (TMBG or otherwise) are welcome.

well, tmbg's cover of 'new york city' that i mentioned is kind of best. also, i can't get 'i hang on every word you say' from the first clearlake record out of my head. or how about 'way you walk' by papas fritas, or 'the you and me song' by the wannadies? those are all pop-rockin'-est for a lovely spring day in nyc.

Already got the Papas Fritas, but I will check the others out. Thanks.

Got any Prefuse 73? That guy is the friggin awesomest DJ I've ever seen (well, tie w/ DJ Shadow). If you've got iTunes to spare (and you want to know what all hip hop will sound like in 5 years), that's where I'd go. (Specifixly: "Smile In Your Face", "Point To B", and "Afternoon Love In" off of Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives)

Oh, thanks for linking S&C. I'm kicking it off with loads of more stiff this month.

I've had the new TMBG EP for a while but haven't got around to listen to it... although a bad review in Rolling Stone bumped it up a few notches on my "listen to now!" list.

You may have also noticed I am unable to spell my own name (or, that my "r" button is sticky).

Hearing TMBG doing Caroline No as given me new respect for them- Brian Wilson wrote some of the most elegant melodies and hearing this almost carnival-esque version is awesome.

stereoG,
npr did a report this am featuring (fluxblog) re: the copyright legitimacy of bloggers posting mp3s or mp3-j'ing. bottom line:
didnt think it passed legal muster but left the question of prosecution up in the air.

If you want to hear more post-John Henry TMBG, I suggest "I've Got a Fang" from Mink Car, or maybe "They Got Lost" from Severe Tire Damage. Or you could always download Ted Leo's "Timorous Me" and Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town" and marvel at the fact that they are the same song.

I thought "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?" was the Thin Lizzy knockoff.

Well, Ted Leo not being the Highlander, there doesn't have to be only one. But I think Timorous Me is the thinner and Lizzier of the two, myself.
