Friday Music Videos
Everyone's off to Miami for the MTV Awards. But I've got more important things to do, like blog and drink coffee and give you links to videos that aren't nominated for any VMAs:

There are dancing girls in it and a cameo from Aloha drummer Cale Parks. Watch: .WMV | .MOV

Subject: here is the fucking fantastic new lcd soundsystem video
Fun fact: Nickelodeon aired a music video for the first time this week. It was the White Stripes' "My Doorbell." (UPDATE: I read that on Yahoo! Apparently it's wrong; Nick used to show videos all the time. Hey, anyone remember Pinwheel? Or Today's Special ... with the dude with the hat?)
Seen any good videos? Post links in the comments.

that Aloha video would be better if a guy in a bear suit jumped out an tackled those dancers.

or a real bear, but wearing running shorts and a headband.
Score = 0
or a bear wearing a green day t-shirt roaring green day is the bestest band ever

Nick used to play videos every so often back in the day.

OK Go's new video is terribly charming. Synchronized dancing in their backyard? Yes, please!
Score = 0
Yeah, diz is right. Nick actually had their own music video show way back in the day.

the new Oasis video for "Importance of Being Idle" is pretty good, it's got Rhys Ifans in it, the new Elbow video for "Forget Myself" is quite good too. Trying to find the new Doves vid for "Sky Starts Falling"...

Yeah scott, Nickelodeon definitely had a video show. I wanna say it was called Nick Rocks or something like that. This was back when programming was divided between kid stuff in the morning and teenage stuff in the afternoons, probably around the same time Spock had that movie review show.

Diz n Joey:
Didn't Nick used to show vids on a show called "PopClips" a couple of years before MTV? And maybe Nick even had another name then. I can remember vids for "Pop Music", "The Game" (Queen), "Walking on the Moon", and some Kim Carnes song. (I'm old).

Don't have a link, but the video for Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Want To" is surprisingly funny. Lots of good jabs at iconic works of modern and contemporary art. The video's a hell of a lot better than the song.

Nickelodeon's video show was, in fact, "Nick
Rocks." I sent probably 100 requests (written on index cards) for Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," still one of my favorite videos of all time. Then, it got taken over by the Johns from TMBG--and I started losing interest.
Anyone seen the video for Clor's "Good Stuff"? Egad.

"Today's Special" was the one where they all worked at a department store and had to turn back into mannequins when people arrived right?

That's amazing, Russ!!!!!! OK, here goes:
Mr. Wizard
DangerMouse (which was just released on DVD)
Belle and Sebastian (the cartoon)
The Little Prince (the cartoon)
Don't Just Sit There (kid-hosted variety show, once had Terry Gilliam as a guest)
...anyone? I'm slowly working my way back to the womb, here.

...I just remembered that I went to undergrad with the little Asian girl from "You Can't Do That on Television" (sic?). Is that the name of the show with Alanis Morrisette and the green slime?
Is this thread turning into "I Love the 80's, Nickelodeon version?"
Score = 0
Yes, Eric (to all of your questions).
Although on "Today's Special" somebody had to say "Hocus Pocus Ala-madocus" to get Jeff to turn from mannequin to human. That was a hot show- Sharon, Lois and Bram even had a spin-off from it.

ok, so what, does the guy get his ass shot off at the end of the Green Day video or what?!?!?

I remember just discovering masturbation to the black chick on Today's Special. Ah, memories. Back in the day, that was the only decent porn us kids had.

Can't believe no one has said this yet, so I'll go ahead:
The girl on the rooftop is adorable.
There. I said it.

yes sir.. i'll second that. she is hot! and where was the drummer from aloha?

Nothing was better than Nick Rocks. It was right after DangerMouse. They could only play 4-5 videos because it was such a short show. I have this one show stuck in my head:
(1) A-Ha: Take on Me (we're all cartoons. or real.)
(2) Starship: Sara (storms were brewing in her eyes on a tire swing)
(3) Whitney Houston: How Will I Know? (you'll know when you're wandering around jackson-pollack painted walls with dudes chasing you)
(4) Starship: We Built This City (yes, yes you did).
I can almost see each of those videos in my head in their entirety and feel myself watching it.
TV is very very bad for children.

hey i know that girl on the rooftop! she's pretty cool too!

"Everyone" is off to the VMAs? Come on, Scott, you're venturing into Pauline Kael, "everyone I know voted for McGovern so he must have won" territory. ;)

Apparently, R.E.M. made an early live appearance circa 1984 (even fielding questions from kids!) on "Nick Rocks." I've never seen the footage, but several books on the band I've read refer to it. I guess the clip must circulate among collectors somewhere.
Score = 0
er, that should be "early television appearance"
Score = 0
REM made an early appearance on Livewire, which was a Phil Donahue-like talk show for kids. Supposedly the Beastie Boys were in the audience that day.
I'm a nerd.

Oh wow...you guys got Today's Special? I thought that it was strictly Canadian...
LCD Soundsystem is damn addictive.

I second the opinion of Russell that Carpark North's video for "Human" is good. Dont know anything about the band, but it's a well-made video.

The Green Day video is one of the most hilariously melodramatic things I've ever seen. The louder the people yelled, the louder I laughed.
And Ok Go's new vid is excellent.

The drummer for Aloha was the guy playing with the neon bowling pin looking thingies. I saw them play a number of times as I went to college with a few of them.
No, I don't think that association makes me cool.

Have you heard the original version of "You've Escaped?" It's on the 7-inch of "Boys In The Bathtub." It's way better than this version.

Todays Special was great! The guy who created/directed it taught me a couple of classes in school (Ryerson TV arts program), and apparently it's coming out on DVD soon. Crazy that anybody here even remembers it...

I'm enjoying so much Mew's "Special" directed by Martin de Thura (they're from Denmark) and the song is great too.

off topic kinda, but over the weekend i was talking with some friends about old tv shows like today's special...small wonder etc.
there was this show with this blonde teenage girl, and her dad lived in outerspace or something...regardless she could talk to him because his voice came out of this crazy ice cube looking thing that opened up and would change colors when he talked.
also when she pressed her index fingers together, she could freeze time.
does anyone remember the name of this show?!?!?!

OUT OF THIS WORLD!
Score = 0
I loved watching "Out Of This World" when I was a kid! The girl's name on the show was Evie and she had her fat Uncle Beano and that vaguely gay neighbor Buzz. It used to come on right before "Small Wonder" and after "My Secret Identity" where I lived. By the way, anyone else remember My Secret Identity? It starred Jerry O'Connell as a kid obsessed with comic books and then he somehow got super powers or something. I just remember that he was able to fly by using 2 aerosol cans as jet propellers. My sister would get pissed off because I'd use up her AquaNet hairspray doing the same trick around the house. AquaNet!
Oh yeah, Adventures of Pete and Pete was an amazing show and they recently released the complete 1st season with shorts on DVD as a 2-disc set. Picked it up a month ago and have been loving it since!
