The 'Gum Drop Volume XV: Hear New White Williams, Win Nirvana And R.E.M. Swag

This week's Drop brought some previously unreleased White Williams straight to your inbox. We have oodles of of love for the one-time BTW and recent Andrew W.K. party school grad, so we were super happy when Williams delivered us "Luke And I," a joyful, mud-stepping extended instrumental. You can hear it here. Proper. And how about "Ol' Dirty Bastard And I"? We didn't pack that into the 'Gum Drop, but you can grab it here courtesy of mastermasher The Hood Interent.

The Hood Internet - "Got Your Smoke (Ol' Dirty Bastard vs. White Williams)" (MP3)

Slammin'. That White Williams surely is versatile.

Of course 'Gum Drops come with other sorts of prizes, too. The MBV reunion and new Breeders have us reeling -- in a good way! -- with '90s alt-rock flashbacks, so this week one winner grabs a big Nirvana Unplugged pack plus the R.E.M. Live CD/DVD and band-autographed Live flats. One grand prize winner bridges the '90s alterna gap, taking home the Nirvana Unplugged prize pack along with the recent Dublin-shot 2 CD/1DVD R.E.M. Live and flat autographed by Stipe, Mills, and Buck. And, you remember Nirvana Unplugged, right? Hard to believe it was 14 years ago that Cobain & Co., joined by the Kirkwood brothers and Pat Smear, played that amazing set on MTV. Unplugged In New York is the first official DVD of that performance -- you get the unedited 66-minute concert, including "Something In The Way" and "Oh Me," which didn't air during the official 44-minute MTV broadcast. It also packs in five previously unreleased rehearsal performances and MTV News interviews with the band and audience. On top of the unplugged action, grab the color-corrected 1994 documentary Live! Tonight! Sold Out!, which traces Nirvana's meteoric rise by overlapping live footage from their '91/'92 Nevermind tour (the year(s) punk broke!), interviews, etc. Let's recap ... The grand prize includes:

  • Nirvana: Unplugged In New York DVD and CD
  • Live! Tonight! Sold Out! DVD
  • Nirvana sticker and three button set
  • An uncut proof sheet of the Live Tonight Sold Out artwork.
Suitable for framing! The R.E.M. gifts are:
  • A copy of the R.E.M. Live CD/DVD
  • A Live flat autographed by the band
You can find out more about your favorite Athenians at their official site. Four runners up each get the R.E.M. goods, but only one person runs the board. Enter here. Also, as a reminder, there's still a week left to enter the contest to win a Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar. Wanna shred? Walk this way.

CONTEST ENDS 12/19/07 AT 12PM EST.

Band To Watch: Hospital Ships

As we pass saturation point for press coverage of Montreal, Portland, Brooklyn and et cetera, it seems Lawrence, Kansas is poised for its coming turn in the music media trend piece carousel. At least from what we're hearing; this marks...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...

Video Hangover: Papa Roach - "Getting Away With Murder"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. This week: Papa Roach lands an uppercut on the glass jaw of big oil.

Damien Jurado - "Murderer" (Low Cover)

After hearing "Gillian Was A Horse" from Damien Jurado's forthcoming Caught In The Trees, we contacted the Seattle singer-songwriter and asked if he'd want to premiere a track at Stereogum. Lucky for us (and you), it turned out he had...
