a myspace secret show is when you put a myspace account known as "myspace secret shows" in your myspace "top 8", then print out a screen showing that they are in your "top 8", and bring it to the show for free admission.

The show last night was a occular/aural assault. I wasn't really expecting much, knowing that it was probably a good chance for myspace to make some money and Cee-Lo/Dangermouse to get some good live licks in before the big show on Sunday at Coachella. Opening with "Go Go Gadget Gospel," it became quite evident that this was a show, not a favor. The Roxy has a curtain that lifts straight up from the stage (a 90 degree angled stage, jutting into the dancefloor) and as the band stood in place, silent, motionless, everyone began cheering on the Tuxedo'd and white mask'd drummer, string quartet, guitar player, bassist (who I noticed was Beck's bassist after he took off his mask), and 2 male/2 female backup singers. Cee-Lo came out with Dangermouse sitting behind the Roland/Wurlitzer/Moog station, both wearing clown masks. Cee-Lo let everyone know that, in fact, we weren't seeing Gnarls Barkley perform but rather Twig and The Berries. (The genre-hopping/unclassifiable nature of the music just can't stop). The band was hot. Everyone was good looking, Cee-Lo worked the crowd like nobody's business. The man is enormous; his presence impossible to ignore. The band held up with the tightness (especially drums) of a weathered, road-happy band. "Smiley Faces" I remember being a standout song, with Mr. Green draping his microphone over his neck and full on cheesin' it for the crowd, all of whom I'm sure we're smiling back at him. "Transformer" was slowed down considerably, with much success, as it was an opportunity to showcase Green's soulful vocal stylings, unlike the dirge-like version of "Crazy" on Top of the Pops, where the effect was really to showcase the song itself (those strings!). "Crazy" was played after a short intro by Cee-Lo in which he proclaimed, smiling like an animal, "I know what you're here for. Here's your fuckin' single." The thirty-five minute set ended up running at about 40 with people wanting more, of course how could you not, but with a set ending with "Storm Coming" (a "category sixty-nine, or some shit like that") and the album covered from head to (almost) toe as only "Feng Shui," and the album's closer "The Last Time," were omitted from the show. I can't imagine the group being able to play much longer. It was a prefect set, really, held together nicely by all elements on stage, and the shadowy Dangermouse conducting with his eyes and head movements at the back of the stage behind everyone else, refusing at times to even be acknowledged by his partner in crime. Great show, wish I had pictures for you. I'll post my shit phone pics later, if people want them.
