Well kids, if you have a spare trust fund laying around and have a "thing" for Velvet Underground records, there's only 11 hours left before the year's most absurd acetate auction closes. For sale is a ultra-fucking-rare copy of "the lost Scepter studios recordings," a 1966 studio effort that was the first "finished" pass at what Warhol gave to Columbia to get 'em signed. You're obviously curious to hear it ... but $155K curious?
Head to eBay to get those bids in! At last check, the price had stalled at a reasonable $155,001.00. So there's hope for you yet.
The guy who stumbled upon this record, Montreal's Warren Hill (who happens to be Sunset Rubdown's roadie), bought the record for 75¢ at a sidewalk sale in Chelsea. Look at him now! Maybe now he can tell Krug to "Rubdown himself, for a change." 75¢ for a record? Totally understandable. $155K? C'mon, kids. That's insane!

UPDATE: Congrats to eBay bidder mechadaddy, the proud owner of some rare VU vinyl at the bargain basement price of $155,401.00! Here's hoping the sound quaity is better than the MP3s that of the Scepter studio sessions that are floating around.

Before the hole E-Bay blow up, the owners made a digital version of the acetate and tried to sell it to a few labels. I
actually received a e-mail (from a source not to be mentioned)
with link to go and download the actual MP3 version of the acetate. So, i know none of you have the 100k plus to dish

I used to collect Misfits and Samhain - I've paid up to $2,000 for some of those rarities (you know, the 5 in existence, hand colored by Glenn in his mother's basement in 1979 stuff).
These days I collect Murder City Devils vinyl; I just laid down $175 for a sealed copy of "Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts" on Pink vinyl. Oh, and then $165 for a second copy two days later.

The tracks for download online are indeed the same recording-- but they're from the other, scratchy acetate found a while back. These recordings have been available; what's great about the new acetate is that it's a pretty clean (release quality) copy.
So actually, i do hope it gets released, and i can update from my crackly bootleged versions.

Well...er....there's a pretty big difference between downloading mp3's and actually owning the vinyl.

Ok well the auction ended and let me tell you a few things about this that are real from the inside that i know(and no im not an employee of any record company). This guy Warren is a POS. He tried to sell this acetate to the record company who holds the rights. He wanted somewhere in the range of 40,000 and they said they would not give him more than 15,000-20,000 and ya know why? cause that is about all its worth. He then tried to sell it to a couple of bootleg companies and they would not give him what he wanted either. So they got some suckers who think this is worth 155,000 dollars to buy it. I am not so sure the ebay auction ended up kosher. The guy who won never got in to the bidding till the very end and if you look at his ebay history among other things a few months ago he was selling his Interpol vinyl box to pay for the rent deposit on his apt. Now suddenly he has 155,000 dollars to pay for this. A lot of times these guys get their buddies to come on in the end and make the final bid. Then they tell ebay the person flaked out so no sale. Then they email the people below the final bid and tell them they can have it for 100 dollars less or whatever they bid. They do this on the side and then they dont have to pay ebay a cut. Happens all the time. Finally I have heard the cd that Warren sent to the record company from the acetate.Believe me it does not sound much better than what you are all hearing plus i bet he has played it more than once thereby already degrading a far from pristine acetate to start with. I hope whoever pays this ridiculous price is ready to set aside about the same amount if they try to put it out. To pay for the lawyers he is going to need to deal with the lawsuit the record company is just itching and ready to file.I only hope that Lou, John, Moe and Sterling's family one day see the money that they rightfully should be getting from this. Sad thing is this deal will make every 2 bit moron who claims to be a record collector come out of the woodwork to scour the chelsea flea markets thinking they will find something like this. Anyone who spends time there knows most of the records sold there are worthless crap.

not quality, i dont expect it to be anything better then my devo picture disc, (which my dad played once and I in turn played just once. grand total 2 plays :) )
but i mean, is this the band at the breaking edge of a new sound? Is it worth listening to or have I heard these songs before (not literally heard before , you all know what i mean i hope.)

The Velvet Underground invented music in 1966 when they released their debut album.
Before that there was no music, just the sound of tumbleweed blowing through the desolate black and white austerity of the mid 20th century.
For xmas this year, why not ask Santa for the VU box set, nearly their whole career on 5cds for a measly $40 (amazon), and be amazed.
