Green day were cute in 94, but it's 10 years later. Dookie pt. middleaged is kinda wearing thin. Same with U2, minus an extra decade. You can almost hear the audience simulataniously saying aloud, "this is the coolest performance ever." What could be more sad? This is the face of counterculture? The joining of music and politics? It's sad to say it; but the apathetic, unoriginal or truly progressive music most likely parallels the sea of fans own ideology.

I personally think they've pulled this song off brilliantly. They were right to let Tre drum the main part, what an awesome drummer! Love how the Edge and Billie Joe sound playing together too.
Before you criticise (or after, in Hector's case), those horn players were musicians from New Orleans that have been helped by Music Rising - remember the U2/Green Day collaboration is for a charitable cause.

I'm with Sasha and DH. I could've done without the "House of the Rising Sun" Billy Joe part, but I think they pulled it off quite well. It went to a good cause. I found the song itself to be frighteningly relevant... Especially the lines about "But the shadows still remain since your descent" on the aftermath of Katrina and "No matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply" about the response of the government. I'm a U2 fan, but I don't like Green Day. I have to say I completely respected them for doing this.

That was my fucking point. Look at the face of the joining of music and politics then and compare it to NOW. I was commenting on the fact that it's an important joining of forces but in its current state it's no wonder that nothing is changing and more youth aren't rallying behind a cause. Our generation is fractured for good reason and it shows that without substance to a movement, it will never create a steady stream of supporters. People have a fun time jumping to the "indie elitest asshole" routine to dismiss all arguments made about popular culture. But if you really want to parallel the 1960's to now then I suggest you really examine the massive differences. Green Day are the Beatles? U2, Simon and Garfunkle? Try and draw any parallel of talent or ability to unite an entire youth and you will most likely notice the scaving differences. Unforunately we're the baby-boomlet as they call it and all the coddling shows, but that's not to say there's not artists capable of bridging the gap. To say we need easily accessible (simplified, generic, uninitersting) artists for that is insulting... and fitting to the mindset I was talking about. Without challenging and thought provoking music being adopted by the larger youth generation as a whole (not likely) the divide will remain. Indie music has begun to encompass much more than "elitest" indie rock, within it now resides our generations beatles, zombies, yardbirds, and donovan.

Stumbled across this site looking for the video for this song. The "Rising Son" part was forced, but works on a medium-cheese level.
However, I think U2 would qualify as the Beatles at this point, not Green Day. That being said, let's compare what U2/Bono has done for the WORLD. D.A.T.A., the One campaign, giving all the proceeds to the song "One" to AIDS research (and producing 3 separate, released music videos for it to keep sales up), yadda yadda yadda.
What did the Beatles/John Lennon do? A lot of drugs and train Yoko Ono. Yeah, they worked with the anti-war movement, but in current day context, so does Cindy Sheehan...

Ask any respecting music fan who listens to a broad range of genres and see how many agree that U2 has not made good music. You want important marriages between politics and music? Go listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday or Where the Streets Have No Name or One. The genius of U2 lies in their ability to craft pop songs that resound with the masses while simultaenously adding in important, intelligent political messages. To say that their music is irrelevant or more broadly, "bad" is ridiculous.
Open your eyes and earsm you fool, and accept the fact that in terms of greater political importance, few bands in history, if ANY rival U2's on an international scale. I defy you to find another. Like anything the Beatles did FORTY years ago is relevant today... or was relevant in the 80's (20 years after). Did people march down the streets of New York in '83 singing "Yellow Submarine" as they snorted coke off of naked supermodels and sold junk bonds for Delorean Motors? Nope.
Music changes with the times. Music CAN be important, but really isn't important even when we think it is. (You can have food, water, and shelter without a radio in sight)
U2, however, has sincerely elevated themselves above merely playing music, and have put their time and money into *trying& to make the world a better place. Granted, Paul McCartney has done some good, but not like what Bono has done.
As far as good music, well, musical taste is purely subjective... the same as whether or not you like peaches. It doesn't matter in that regard. What's amazing about U2 is that even if you absolutely hate them, you can't deny that they use their standing for a much greater good. Many people's lives have been touched in REAL WAYS (food, water, shelter) because of U2.
Can the Beatles say that? Not really. McCartney can, but only so much. (Landmines and eating meat, anyone?)
Personally, I don't think I've ever had a more tender steak that one that's been blown to bits by a Claymore. Deeee-lish.

Everyone needs to remember that these two bands got together to help a entire region of musicians, that Katrina and a slow fucked up response from our government has almost destroyed. Without the muscians from the delta region of the great Mississippi river, we would not have the Blues, Jazz or Rock and Roll. This place is the Birthplace of all American Music. Hell who would have inspired the Beatles,The Stones, U2 or any other band for the last 60 years without the great muscians to come from this area of the country. You should all look into the history of music since the 1950's and see where the music came from who touched them all. It came from the slaves in the fields, the old blues players who left the south and went north to have a little more freedom from what life was like in the south, from the great Jazz players who played in whore houses, to the Jely Roll's and Robert Johnson. Without these people and the part of America that Katrina FUCKED up and a year later our government has not repaired, I say God Bless U2 and GreenDay for anything they can do to help our musicians. I used to run the local symphony hall in New Orleans for the last 10 years and Katrina closed it along with all the other large theatres and most of the clubs that bands made a living in. So I think some of you miss the point of what these two bands have tried to do. They or helping musicians play music. I think it is a great thing. Who's to say the next big thing in music won't come from this help. Who's to say the next big musical act won't come from this area of the USA. I have been involved in the clean up of New Orleans for the last year since the entire music industry was almost wiped out, and I can tell you working 84 hours a week for the last year you would not believe the bad shape this great city is in. Come down here and look for yourself. More than half our people are still gone because their homes have been washed away. The help from our government is just now starting to get to people to help rebuild. For those of us who had our own insurance it took me 10 months to get a check to replace my roof.
So some of you want to take away from what these two bands did, well thats fine. This is America and you can have your say in things. But God Bless anyone who wants to come down here and help us and to help those who have lost everything.

I am kind of offended by everyone missing the main point!! Sure you can make Billboard comments about the bands now but were YOU listening to them when they were still underground??? Well I was!! Both of these bands have fought long and hard to be where they are today and I think they deserve kudos for that if nothing else. The whole point of this was much like New York after 9/11, New Orleans is still there after Katrina. This was FOR NEW ORLEANS!!!
They were in the Superdome, first event there.

All I have to say is, this was an act of UNITY! Don't care WHO was playing. Both bands could have stayed "uncerground" but also realized the oportunity of what GOOD they could do.
And there are people in small villages,sick children & Aids victims who probably would consider U2 saints! (As well as other charitors)

I've met people who were inspired to live because of a U2 song, that kept themselves from ending it all. I"m 19 years old and consider u2 the best band ever.Just think of their latest album and all those really cool songs they produced (keep in mind that "SOMETIMES YOU CAN"t MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN won the Best song Grammy award)

I get a bit fed up with these 2 bands although i used to be a big fan of Greenday. Bonos in the face of the general public all the time asking for cash when hes rolling in it. yes its nice he gives a shit but its wearing thin. please someone hand him a noble peace prize or something to get him out our face. Greenday are suddenly like political after the best part of 15 year acting like clowns. before American Idiot came out I remember seeing them in Glasgow at The SECC and there tickets were reasonably priced and the same could be said about their t-shirts and other merch. I do not know what to say. This is so wrong. Bono is the most self promoting loser to ever to insult music fans.
I have loved Green Day since seeing them on video performing at Woodstock '94. I was 13 at the time about the same age as the new wave of Green Day fans getting into American Idiot.
This is a great cause do not get me wrong, I just can not believe a band of the respect and inspiration of Green Day would stand alongside such a false and hypocritical politician as Bono. One minute hugging Tony Blair (??????????????) the next he is throwing his toys out the pram because he cant sing his own line on the re-release of do they know its christmas.
People of America will probably lap this up, but I know many Green Day and music fans in general will be appalled by this sight.
I sound as selfish as Bono by moaning about this, but I have nothing to promote just a sick feeling seeing one of my boyhood heros standing alongside a symbol that represents everything that is bad about music (Bono being the latter.)
I wish the success of this single for the sake of the people that deserve help, but I then hope it gets consigned to the bows of history and never seen again. If only certain powers cared about the people this record is aiming to help, we could have eased the wounds of one catatrophe and prevented this one.

However, I hate U2. No, that's wrong, I like some of U2's music but they're not half as good as people make out.
I hate how people think they were the 1st band to sing about the going's on in Ireland. Ever heard of Stiff Little Fingers's Hanks? The songs on there were much better than anything U2 have ever done. STL Did a song called "Bloody Sunday" sound familiar? A long time before U2's came out.

U2 has been big on New Orleans since the storm... Bono was all over the circuit during Jazzfest (i actually saw him @ Keller Williams late night). Edge was jamming with Dave Matthews at Jazzfest. The song is about saints, hence the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS... and it was our first home game since the storm. so, I think whether the song sounds good or not, they put a little thought into what they should play.

That performance and the video supporting it are awesome. I've lived through the '60,'70s, 80's ... with the like of The Beatles, The Dead, Young, Dylan, The Clash...all the greats, and U2 shine amongst them. Their music is powerful, ever changing, often stunning and much appreciated all over the world. I am grateful for it and all they have stood for.
Green Day have become a band to reckon with. In my experience, when a song gets the masses talking, most likely it hit a nerve. Their music is guilty of that. Something tells me they're wearing proud grins on their faces. There music is fun as well. No complaints here.
What happened (or didn't) in New Orleans is still affecting the lives of its citizens, so a performance or a message board discussion is helpful on keeping the focus where its needed.

Ps I've read a log where a fan said that she was at the performance, and that Larry Mullen Jr. suprised her by out drumming Green Days drummer. Way to go Larry!

Hey there everybody! I'm from New Zealand and am a massive Green Day Fan butnot so much of U2. The video was really awesome so major props to the guys for that. I'm a huge Beatles fan, one of those who think Beatles is an "unachievable summit", and it's not because what they actually did, but rather what they believe in, what they inspired others to do. Call me naive, but I honestly believe Love and Music CAN save the world.

I am from the south mississippi and my house was destroyed in katrina and it is really sad because i lost all of my stuff i had green day and u2 cd's and now they are all washed to sea and we cant afford hardly nething cause we live in a trailor payin for money fones cable and looking for a new house I love this song the saints are really coming and goig to the Championships to beat Chicago and go to the Super Bowl 41
