Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest Debuts In Billboard Top 10 The band's third LP moved over 33K albums in the first week to land at #8 providing, at the very least, an objective metric for the > or < Merriweather debate. Veckatimest comes in behind the likes of Eminem, Green Day, Hannah Montana, Lady GaGa, and Kenny Chesney. Which is really weird.

Wow, I'm not the biggest fan of Grizzly Bear (for me it's like drinking cough medicine on a rainy night) but this is great news...anything to break the shitty mainstream mold

Why is that really weird? Over- hyping a band will sell albums. The same people who buy the new eminim and greenday want to appear ahead of the curve. I remember seeing Arcade Fire alongside of Let Love in (goo goo dolls) and the new Carrie Underwood in peoples CD collections. Not to say the buyers actually LIKE the music (or music in general)

YES to the douchebag observation. I don't care who listens to what. I don't care if my favorite band gets popular. But the increased douchebag quotient at shows is terrible.

Case in point: Modest Mouse. Saw them in 2001. Great show, great crowd. Saw them in 2008. Great show, douchebag crowd factor increased tenfold. Girls in tube tops and mini skirts were getting on stage and trying to freak dance with Isaac Brock. In the middle of songs.

One of these days I'll remember not read comment posts when good things happen to good bands.
It's interesting how the drop in music sales overall has allowed more indie bands to chart on Billboard. In the long haul I hope it gives a boost to indie exposure and sales.

My congratulations to Grizzly Bear. They definitely exceeded my expectations when they played the 9:30 Club on Monday.

Now, answer me this. Why the continued coverage about whether this album is better or worse than Merriweather Post Pavilion? Because of the web sheriff scandal earlier this year? While that might have made sense in January, the continued mentions of whether or not Grizzly Bear is better than Animal Collective or vice versa seems like you're elongating a nonexistent conflict and it's really kind of irritating. I mean, I could be missing something, but I don't think the bands are outwardly fighting...or even outwardly care much. Both have a lot of the same fans and both put out more pop-friendly yet experimentally minded with fantastic harmonies. I don't see at what point it becomes a competition.

I will actually say that the two had shows of comparable awesomeness at the 9:30 Club and that Grizzly Bear may have even edged out Animal Collective. Animal Collective's show at the Ottobar, in Baltimore, however? Unmatched. By anyone. But as I mentioned - these two bands don't exist in conflict for me. I think it's pretty shitty to more or less imply that success for these guys must mean that they made boring music that the stupid Hannah Montana-loving public will just eat up. In that blog post you say you're sure they're nice guys and you wish them well, so what's wrong with Grizzly Bear coming into success after years of hard work? Are you saying that any indie band who gains some mainstream success must have done so by making insipid music? Because the way you said it certainly implies that.

I disagree with your opinions on the music itself, but that's different. If Veckatimest isn't your thing, that's fine, but all of this putting them down just because they're selling albums is ridiculous.

What I clearly said is that MOR is simple, non-challenging music. I don't recall Radiohead or Interpol achieving sales of this magnitude this quickly (excluding the Creep single). I love the genre that Grizzly Bear occupies; Band of Horses and Iron & Wine are personal favorites. But those bands write complex, beautiful melodies and thus will never reach the heights of....Grizzly Bear, who dumb the genre down for people.....like.....you.

Last time I checked Interpol's 3rd album debuted at #4 and Radiohead's 3rd album was called OK Computer. I certainly dont know what Grizzly Bear album you've been listening to but I wouldnt say they are in the same genre as Band of Horses or Iron & Wine. Grizzly Bear has a sort of chamber pop sound to them and while they might not be "complex" as you describe they certainly dont resemble any mainstream music out there that would perceive them as dumbed-down. I like Band of Horses and Iron & Wine but what Grizzly Bear are doing is just way more special.

You obviously don't know ANYTHING about music, because honestly band of horses and Iron and wine, while perfectly fine, are far FAR more amateur and simple than Grizzly Bear, who use non traditional chord progressions and interesting harmonies. Band of Horses and Iron and Wine and Fleet Foxes are your meat and potatoes that's fine and all, but Grizzly Bear are FAR more inventive you just don't understand musically how much more complex they are. Sorry, that means YOU are stupid

Whoa dude... did I not specifically say that I didn't really have a problem with your opinion on Veckatimest? As I said before, I don't agree with you, but my comment took issue with the fact that you said Grizzly Bear's recent chart success proves that they made crappy music, NOT the fact that you dislike their their music. As far as I can tell that makes you the one who can't understand what was "clearly" stated. And I think insulting my taste in music was uncalled for and unrelated to my criticism, especially seeing as I gave you that respect, but hey, that's just me. I guess that's what I get for attempting to be civil on the internet.

For the record, I liked Veckatimest a lot, and I like Grizzly Bear's past work a lot too. I don't think they're breaking the mold, but I hear a lot of the same things you were just talking about with Band of Horses and Iron and Wine (I quite like both of those bands too, speaking of which, although I'm not so sure they're the same genre) in Grizzly Bear. I would go as far as saying, as another commenter did, that Grizzly Bear are the most complex and interesting band of the three - but that's only to my ears and you're more than welcome to feel otherwise. I'm generally not the type to question someone's intelligence over a band. But since we're apparently playing nasty now, then I'll go ahead and say I think comparing them to latter-day Steely Dan and Phil Collins (as you did at your blog) is hyperbolic. I don't think pretty music (or even simple music, for that matter) automatically equates to adult alternative crap, and even though you're criticizing Grizzly Bear for being "non-challenging", I sincerely doubt that every single band you listen to is a cutting-edge innovator. I would certainly hesitate to throw Band of Horses and Iron and Wine in such a category.

And like someone else said, if we're comparing the third albums of alternative and indie bands to Veckatimest now... Radiohead's third album (a little record called OK Computer) debuted at #1 in the UK and #21 in the US, was immensely hyped all over the place, and today is triple-platinum in the UK alone. So I don't really get where you're going with that little point.

I would have to wholeheartedly disagree with you.

This conception of middle of the road music is simply too subject to changing opinions and taste to really be applicable to this situation.

The complexity of music has nothing to do with the how harmonious it might sound to someone's ears.

I would cite Classical music as an example of this. To many it is easy listening but the complexity of the harmonies and movements through chord progressions and scales puts classical music in the realm of some of the most complicated music ever created.

the complexity comes from the interplay of musical ideas, however pleasing to the ear they might be.

Though decidedly less complex than classical music, Grizzly Bear's work is ultimately about the same ideas something that has been absent from prominence in rock/pop music since punk really.

Is it new? No but it is an interesting take on an old trick especially in the use of atmospheric effects and processing.

Is it about the lyrics? Hardly this band is about as formal as they get but I don't think that should be held against them. Some artists trend toward lyrical content and others towards an interest in musical forms themselves. Grizzly bear chooses almost exclusively to tackle the latter.

Lastly,

WHAT'S WRONG WITH MAKING MUSIC PEOPLE LIKE? The sort of cultural elitism that seeks to keep indie music indie is the same sort of bullshit that feeds blogs like Pitchfork. Maybe the bloggers have gotten old or maybe people have just caught up to their taste.

And to me that's great. Cause if I never read another smug/condescending pitchfork review excerpt I'll die a happy man. Maybe these blogger can final hang their hats up and enjoy their music for themselves again without feeling the need to dictate their tastes to the world.

The world would be no less impoverished by the loss of another music snobs opinion posted all over the web.

Thank you and good night.

Grizzly Bear does appear to have a wider span of appeal than Animal Collective. I've held that personal belief since Yellow House, and now apparently I have Billboard backing me up. Animal Collective is great don't get me wrong, but their tribal undertones (on this album) are understandably not going to penetrate the bubble that is the American music scene as well as Grizzly Bear's smooth amalgamation of folk and '50s pop. And Grizzly Bear did this in 3 albums, compared to Animal Collective's collection, which brings up another point that Animal Collective's lack of sound direction from album to album may also play a role.

I was just curious as to why people jump up and down when an "indie" band breaks through. How are GB any different from some of the other acts on there? I'm sure they have a manager, tour manager, merch people, roadies, etc. helping them out. Not saying there's anything wrong with that and I would suspect that one would NEED all those people to help further their career. However, make no mistake, there is NOTHING independent about these guys, or Arcade Fire, or Animal Collective, etc.

This is not a dis on Grizzly Bear, but there sound is much safer to the public than Animal Collective. I love both bands, but Animal Collective are shifting gears in their overall sound from record to record, which is more appealing for some listeners, but not for others. I don't think Animal Collective have a lack of 'sound' direction what so ever. Also, Grizzly Bear opening for Radiohead gave them a heck of a lot more exposure as well. Still MPP sold 25K the first week, which is still mighty impressive for AC. Cheers to both bands.

Especially after all the hoopla over the crappy leaked version. I really dont see Grizzly Bear fans as casual listeners. I've never bought from iTunes but what is it like a dollar per song? I found the best thing to my friend's birthday… It's really hard to find cool and still unique.
So today I saw this thing from ZTARLET on facebook where you can name a real star in the sky and have the certificate and a teddy bear sent to you and pay it by a single SMS. So awesome :)

I don't know how making it to 8 on billboard, in this particular case, means that Grizzly Bear has gone mainstream, or was widely purchased by the mainstream. Is it that hard to believe that there have been 33,000+ GB fans over the last couple years and they were all excited enough to buy the album when it came out? Perhaps the population of sarcastic music snobs is much larger we all think.

There's an article about Grizzly Bear in Time magazine this week, so they might be a little more popular than alot of you commenters are making them out to be.

1) Southern Point (rossen)- 0
2) Two Weeks(droste)- 5
3) All We Ask( rossen)- 3
4) cheerleader (droste)-4.5
5) Dory(rossen)-1
6) Ready able(droste) 4.5
7) About Face( droste) 5
8) Hold still (rossen)-0
9) While you Wait for The others(rossen)-4
10) I live with you(rossen)-0
11) Foreground( droste)- 4

Pretty much Daniel Rossen ruined this record.. He must do a lot of the arranging or be really sensitive.. Because Droste should have definately told him that Dory, Hold Still, Southern Point, and I live With You were awful songs.. They tried to do the best they could to save them,, But a non existent melody is a non existent melody.. I

Left out Fine For Now. While You Wait For Others- 5 imo. (I'm assuming your scale was out of 5.)

Fine For Now-2.5

Southern point and Dory are not good.. In fact they anger me.. because they make it so I cant just let this record play all the way through..

When everyone is singing.. While you Wait for The Others is a 5.. so the chorus.. but not the verse.

I'm already tired of Cheerleader and Two Weeks, yes due partly to the fact that they are singles, bu compared to the other (Rossen) songs, these two have no depth. Southern Point and Dory are great. Both sound like they could have come off of Yellow House.

Good for them. After all the hoopla about having this album leaked months prior, I'm glad to see people still bought it. Granted, I'm not included, but I'm seeing them in a couple of weeks! They get more money touriing anyway right? RIGHT?

bad list. Veck should be #1 and MPP should be nowhere within the top 20

it's not really that good

Yes it is. not only is it #1.. But its miles ahead of every other release this year.. this nothing even in the same League...Now Veckatimest probably will fall out of the top 20 by years end... And Bitte Orca will probably go up.. it keeps getting better!

You are either going to school for political science/music/liberal arts/philosophy, or you work at Apple. Pretty much every album you mentioned is average or below average... except for Veckatimest... which is a great album... but apparently not good enough for your subtle yet progressive tastes. Go have sex with Albert Camus or something.

Wow are people using the p4k scale?

I love it that people take the time to spell out their favorite or least favorite songs on this album/favorite albums of 2009. I also love it that they think people reading this blog care. Well, I care, but only cause it's funny.

33,000 albums, while enough to make it into the upper reaches of Billboard these days, is a very small number. Everyone saying this means "more douchebags at Grizzly Bear shows" is confused. You blogosphere-type guys were still pretty much the only ones who bought it.

"A stereogummer's self-esteem level must be inversely proportional to the success of his or her favorite band."

Found in Article IV Section 2 of the Stereogum bylaws. Grizzly Bear has too many fans. Must claim love for new, more obscure band so my life can regain its meaning.

Veckatimest is a good album, but nowhere near the best this year. My vote is still MPP as it just seems to be a more wholly enjoyable experience to my ears. I just thought Yellow House was a much better album for Grizzly.

Obviously Animal Collective > Grizzly Bear because hey didn't get on the Billboard Top 10 which makes them way more indie. Ha. What a fucking joke.

I saw GB in Bloomington last night - it was one of the tightest, most well-performed shows I've ever seen. I'm glad they're finally getting some recognition, although it makes going to see them more difficult, as they're selling out everywhere. I highly recommend seeing them live, if you get a chance to do so!

Dudes. I hate a lot of stuff...
When this album first leaked, I threw it out the window.
Now...after like 10 listens and a three month break...and now a spin everyday.

This album is pretty freaking sweet.

The hype, the carts don't matter. Never have.

This album will be remembered and listened to for a long time.
It's America's answer to On the Threshold of a Dream.

Thank you Grizzly Bear.

It was just announced that Chris Bear will be using his his portion of the profits from Veckatimest to pay the medical expenses of fans whose faces are melted or whose heads explode due to his badass drumming.

I think its great that they've gotten the attention they are getting. But seriously, how is it they are getting SO much attention? I've followed the rise of their carreer from the beginning...these guys have had a cakewalk of a time from the start. Their first record 'Horn of Plenty' was somewhat unremarkable, but got covered everywhere. For some reason, I think its because of their press people, they have gotten huge amounts of attention even when they didn't deserve it. They might be the luckiest band in the world. For instance, when a big act like Paul Simon or Radiohead say they like GB, its everywhere. However, when Elton John says he's a big fan of Sufjan...not anywhere near the same attention. Furthermore, we can all flip out over an indie band getting on the billboard charts but this is nothing new and I'm suprised anyone considers this news. WIth all the hype this record has gotten I was suprised it didnt do better (Arcade Fire was at #2).

Again, GB is a very good band indeed. But let's spread the attention out here. Dirty Projectors have made a better album this year, but they will not get the same attention as GB. WHy? Not sure. I do think there is some weird fascination a lot of people have with this band that goes beyond their music.
