My congratulations to Grizzly Bear. They definitely exceeded my expectations when they played the 9:30 Club on Monday.
Now, answer me this. Why the continued coverage about whether this album is better or worse than Merriweather Post Pavilion? Because of the web sheriff scandal earlier this year? While that might have made sense in January, the continued mentions of whether or not Grizzly Bear is better than Animal Collective or vice versa seems like you're elongating a nonexistent conflict and it's really kind of irritating. I mean, I could be missing something, but I don't think the bands are outwardly fighting...or even outwardly care much. Both have a lot of the same fans and both put out more pop-friendly yet experimentally minded with fantastic harmonies. I don't see at what point it becomes a competition.

I think it's pretty shitty to more or less imply that success for these guys must mean that they made boring music that the stupid Hannah Montana-loving public will just eat up. What I clearly said is that MOR is simple, non-challenging music. I don't recall Radiohead or Interpol achieving sales of this magnitude this quickly (excluding the Creep single). I love the genre that Grizzly Bear occupies; Band of Horses and Iron & Wine are personal favorites. Last time I checked Interpol's 3rd album debuted at #4 and Radiohead's 3rd album was called OK Computer. I certainly dont know what Grizzly Bear album you've been listening to but I wouldnt say they are in the same genre as Band of Horses or Iron & Wine. Grizzly Bear has a sort of chamber pop sound to them and while they might not be "complex" as you describe they certainly dont resemble any mainstream music out there that would perceive them as dumbed-down. I would go as far as saying, as another commenter did, that Grizzly Bear are the most complex and interesting band of the three - but that's only to my ears and you're more than welcome to feel otherwise. But since we're apparently playing nasty now, then I'll go ahead and say I think comparing them to latter-day Steely Dan and Phil Collins (as you did at your blog) is hyperbolic. I don't think pretty music (or even simple music, for that matter) automatically equates to adult alternative crap, and even though you're criticizing Grizzly Bear for being "non-challenging", I sincerely doubt that every single band you listen to is a cutting-edge innovator. And like someone else said, if we're comparing the third albums of alternative and indie bands to Veckatimest now... I would have to wholeheartedly disagree with you.
This conception of middle of the road music is simply too subject to changing opinions and taste to really be applicable to this situation.
The complexity of music has nothing to do with the how harmonious it might sound to someone's ears.
I would cite Classical music as an example of this. To many it is easy listening but the complexity of the harmonies and movements through chord progressions and scales puts classical music in the realm of some of the most complicated music ever created.
the complexity comes from the interplay of musical ideas, however pleasing to the ear they might be.
Though decidedly less complex than classical music, Grizzly Bear's work is ultimately about the same ideas something that has been absent from prominence in rock/pop music since punk really.
Is it new? No but it is an interesting take on an old trick especially in the use of atmospheric effects and processing.
Is it about the lyrics? Hardly this band is about as formal as they get but I don't think that should be held against them. Some artists trend toward lyrical content and others towards an interest in musical forms themselves. Grizzly bear chooses almost exclusively to tackle the latter.
Lastly,
WHAT'S WRONG WITH MAKING MUSIC PEOPLE LIKE? The sort of cultural elitism that seeks to keep indie music indie is the same sort of bullshit that feeds blogs like Pitchfork. Maybe the bloggers have gotten old or maybe people have just caught up to their taste.
And to me that's great. Cause if I never read another smug/condescending pitchfork review excerpt I'll die a happy man. Maybe these blogger can final hang their hats up and enjoy their music for themselves again without feeling the need to dictate their tastes to the world.

Grizzly Bear does appear to have a wider span of appeal than Animal Collective. I've held that personal belief since Yellow House, and now apparently I have Billboard backing me up. Animal Collective is great don't get me wrong, but their tribal undertones (on this album) are understandably not going to penetrate the bubble that is the American music scene as well as Grizzly Bear's smooth amalgamation of folk and '50s pop. And Grizzly Bear did this in 3 albums, compared to Animal Collective's collection, which brings up another point that Animal Collective's lack of sound direction from album to album may also play a role.

I was just curious as to why people jump up and down when an "indie" band breaks through. How are GB any different from some of the other acts on there? I'm sure they have a manager, tour manager, merch people, roadies, etc. helping them out. This is not a dis on Grizzly Bear, but there sound is much safer to the public than Animal Collective. I love both bands, but Animal Collective are shifting gears in their overall sound from record to record, which is more appealing for some listeners, but not for others. I don't think Animal Collective have a lack of 'sound' direction what so ever. Also, Grizzly Bear opening for Radiohead gave them a heck of a lot more exposure as well. Still MPP sold 25K the first week, which is still mighty impressive for AC. Cheers to both bands.

If you read Billboard's article I believe it says that 40% of the sales were downloads. A band like this shouldn't be having that much of a percentage of sales be downloads. Especially after all the hoopla over the crappy leaked version. I really dont see Grizzly Bear fans as casual listeners. I've never bought from iTunes but what is it like a dollar per song? Your going to pay about the same or even less if you buy the CD and then you can rip it to a much better quality. Buy from Independent music stores!!!

I'm glad they're finally getting some recognition, although it makes going to see them more difficult, as they're selling out everywhere. I highly recommend seeing them live, if you get a chance to do so!

When this album first leaked, I threw it out the window.
Now...after like 10 listens and a three month break...and now a spin everyday.
This album is pretty freaking sweet.
The hype, the carts don't matter. Never have.
This album will be remembered and listened to for a long time.
It's America's answer to On the Threshold of a Dream.

I think its great that they've gotten the attention they are getting. But seriously, how is it they are getting SO much attention? I've followed the rise of their carreer from the beginning...these guys have had a cakewalk of a time from the start. Their first record 'Horn of Plenty' was somewhat unremarkable, but got covered everywhere. For some reason, I think its because of their press people, they have gotten huge amounts of attention even when they didn't deserve it. They might be the luckiest band in the world. For instance, when a big act like Paul Simon or Radiohead say they like GB, its everywhere. However, when Elton John says he's a big fan of Sufjan...not anywhere near the same attention. Furthermore, we can all flip out over an indie band getting on the billboard charts but this is nothing new and I'm suprised anyone considers this news. WIth all the hype this record has gotten I was suprised it didnt do better (Arcade Fire was at #2).
Again, GB is a very good band indeed. But let's spread the attention out here. Dirty Projectors have made a better album this year, but they will not get the same attention as GB. WHy? Not sure. I do think there is some weird fascination a lot of people have with this band that goes beyond their music.
