Happy 5th Birthday, iPod!

On this day in 2001, Apple launched the gadget that enabled our music geekery to escalate to unprecedented levels. After that day, the subways, sidewalks, and school halls of Every City, USA were populated by a new class of pedestrian: the glassy-eyed MP3 zombie, readily identified via standard, white earbuds and detachment from immediate environs. In other words, it's five years to the day since life got awesome.

Think that the iPod has been good for your lifestyle? Get a load of how it's been for Apple. The NY Post reports that there has been an increase of approximately 800% in stock price (from $9 to $79 a share on a "post-split basis"), and $7.7 billion in sales of 39.4 million iPods. And the party ain't over! An analyst estimates that Apple will sell 111 million iPods (for $18.7 billion) in sales over the next two years.

Those are massive numbers, so we're wondering: How many of those 39.4 million iPods went to you alone? Count us among the suckers that have had nearly every memory size in every version, 'cause it just wouldn't be American not to buy-and-replace with unmitigated fervor. Anything more than three a year, though, and you have issues.

Number of iPods: 0

I know that's odd. I'm not some fossilized musical dinosaur nor am I really against them. I just haven't found the need to drop the dough on them. Everytime I think I'm ready to make that purchase, I realize where am I going that I'd use an iPod. Other than the gym (which I just started going to), I really don't need music to survive. When I'm on the bus, I like to read and never think about needing music.

I know eventually I'll buy one--it's just that I'll end up doing it when I feel it will serve me the purpose of paying its price.

I've just had one second generation (15 gigabyte) ipod, and have somehow not had any issues, except for when I updated the software for the first time a couple of months ago, and it wiped out my ipod's memory, luckilly everything was on itunes. I agree w/ Justin that I really just use it at the gym, but I go to the gym at least once a week, and carrying around a cd player is a pain.

4th gen 60gb ipod photo (bought the day after)

Anyone who has had their ipod stolen, does it frustrate you that apple refuses to mark your serial number as stolen??? With a majority of ipods being sent or brought into the Apple store for repairs..if they simply marked your serial number as stolen and they ran it to see if your ipod still had a warranty they could see if it was stolen and help curb such rampant thefts. It's pretty depressing losing 400 bucks in 5 minutes... then having to spend another half grand on another one the next day.

no actual ipods. i've gone through 6 harddrive based players in that same time, of course, but i couldn't afford to eat if i had to use itunes to manage music.

4 gb mini, used 2-1/2 years daily on a 16 km cycle to work. Wheel a bit crunchy navigating but considering it's in an outside pocket none to shabby.

I wish I kept the Diamond Rio I bought in '98, just so I can show my grandkids that we used to have to walk around with only eight songs in our pocket. I still have my Compaq Ipaq in a drawer somewhere.

I love the ipod backlash. Sure some people have them because they follow trends, but I have one because it's a very well designed portable music player.

In Australia they just got voted the most UN-reliable product of the last 5 years.

I've only got one and I've had it for almost a year and it is so scratched and there was that day when it wiped 50% of what was on it. I cried. I actually did....we haven't been as close since.

I've never had any problems with any of my iPods, I've travelled everywhere with them, and even my 3rd Gen - after 3 years - maintained good battery life.

I may hold off on all iPod acquisitions until they come out with a slim 100GB -- but I'm notorious for upgrading everytime those bastards put out a new line. For now, I'm comfy with my 2GB Nano and my 60GB brick. For now.

1 iPod, a mini. Don't remember how many gb though, 10 or less.

It died about a year after I got it, mostly because I dropped into a lake.

Lat week I just bought an 20GB Archos Gmini 402 camcorder for $250 and it's my new best friend.

1st: 40gb model. Last iPod before the color screen came around.

2nd: iPod nano. Was great, but i ran out of memory after a month, so i sold it to a friend.

3rd: 30gb iPod Video. Works well, but i'm about to run out of space. also, i have "will's trippy ipod" engraved on the back.

Make it 7, my wife is getting a nano for christmas, so she can stop using mine in the ihome to go to sleep by.....
Or 8, depending on what the next generation brings me.......

I had a 4gig nano but i've had it refunded because it didn't have enough memory so i bought a 5th gen ipod (video) and i'm quite satisfied so far even if i find that the click wheel is hard to operate compared to old ipods

i wish they would make ipods with aluminium casing like the new nanos and the old minis

3rd gen 20 gig. not enough for all my music. i plan on keeping it until it breathes its last breath. three years and still kicking with not a single problem that a reset (not restore) couldn't fix. it even took a few trips flying off a treadmill.

The iPod was hardly the first MP3 player, just smartly designed and well-marketed. Unfortunately Apple chose to take the proprietary route, just as it always does, and that therefore makes the device highly undesirable to me. I like my Archos much better, thank you very much!

1- 40 G that I bought new in May of 2003. Never had a problem that the reset didn't take care of, and that only happened maybe twice. Everyone I know that bought one after that has had to get replacements every 6 months or so. I want a 100GB to fit my collection, but even when they come out with it, I'm afraid the quality has gone down in the last three years, and weirder still, everyone just keeps buying a new one once a year. I love my iPod and hope it never dies. 3 1/2 years old and kicking!

I've had a 20gb 4G for about two years. I have 2gb free, and that's only because I keep deleting stuff to leave a little free space. I figure I'll keep this one until it dies, although I really want one the 5.5G's for the gapless playback. I use it in the car, the gym, on flights, and every night as I'm going to sleep.

Hear hear for Matt with pointing out that the iPod was far from the first mp3 player (and furthermore that it's encumbered by being heavily proprietary). When it first came out, the folks at slashdot naturally laughed at it, especially compared to players already on the market at the time . . . a few factors leaning heavily on shrewd marketing have put it at the top (in North America, at least; more technologically adept places like South Korea, well, last I checked Apple was in 13th place in sales there).

Myself, I took forever to get a player mainly because I've been (a) low on money, student and all, plus (b) it's kinda hard to find a decent one around this continent, especially in Western Canada. Finally got a Samsung flash player over a year ago, then a few weeks back a Cowon iAudio X5; more features than the fanciest of iPods yet 20GB for under $200 :)
