Heaven Is A Place In France

Our favorite Go-Go Belinda Carlisle recently wrapped a 25th anniversary tour of Beauty and the Beat, which featured the album played live in sequence. She now lives in the South of France and is releasing Voila, an album of French classics produced by Massive Attack and Portishead. Nerve caught up with Belinda through the magic of telephone. She looks pretty good for 47...

Unless that's an old photo.

NERVE: So the infamous Go-Go's roadie tape has been circulating [featuring several of the Go-Go's harassing a drunken roadie, and Carlisle babbling in a chemically induced haze]. What are your thoughts about that now?
BELINDA CARLISLE [Groans] It's embarrassing and awful. If you're going to do something so stupid, don't do it on camera. It doesn't make me uncomfortable, because it was over twenty years ago, but I'll tell you what: It's a good anti-drug film. And it's something I really regret. It was complete stupidity.

NERVE: Hilary Duff did a remake of the song "Our Lips Our Sealed" with her sister Haylie. Have you heard it?
BELINDA CARLISLE: I haven't. It was a big hit there, wasn't it? Wait, who did it again?

NERVE: Hilary Duff.
BELINDA CARLISLE: No, I haven't heard it. She's a cute girl, and I'm sure she did a good job with it. But it's the writers who handle those things. And believe me, there are certain decisions I don't agree with. [Commercial jingle] "We Got the Beef," for example, because it sends the wrong message.

We think Of Montreal would disagree. Hey, wasn't "We Got The Beef" an unreleased "Weird Al" song?

Why isn't that roadie tape on YouTube? Who's got a link?

She isn't really your favorite Go-Go, is she? I mean, what about Charlotte Caffrey? Jane Wiedlin? Sure, I lost some respect for Jane when she did The Surreal Life. But Charlotte's married to a Redd Kross brother. Belinda likes Republican dudes, last I heard. Which was admittedly awhile ago...

On second thought, damn us both to hell for having favorite Go-Gos...

That photo is from 1996/1997 from when she was promoting her "A Woman & A Man" album. She still looks damn good, though.

Ya, I agree with David. And how lame is "It's a good anti drug film"? Why not just tell the kids "I had a blast when I was young but don't you try it"!

I think the photo is from 1998/1999, because when she was promoting her "A Woman & A Man" album, she looked a one-color hair.
She was inteligent when accepted she took drugs in the earlier eighties; it permit her to save critics that can receive while is promoting a new album. But, who's interesting in show that tape now? I'm sure isn't a Belinda's friend.

About the photo, Belinda looked that hair exactly when she was promoting her "Greatest 1998" (released only for Japan), and appeared with it in the album's cover.
The album "Voilà" is writting totally in french: that sounds interesting, and show us how she's looking for the way to surprise her fans worldwide, and I enjoy it; but fans will continue expecting her beautiful "anthems" too. I love them.
By the time, in next interview she can give an specific advice to younger people: "Don't try drugs, is the worst thing you can do".
