He'll Shovel 4 Ya

We always wondered what sort of "community service" celebrities are expected to perform when they get in trouble with the law. Finally, AP sheds some light on the issue.

Culture Club's former frontman George O'Dowd was a bad Boy (har, har) last year with that false reporting of burglary at his apt (not his fault -- he was high on cocaine, police discovered). He pled guilty and was sentenced to enter a drug program and do five days of community service ... which he never completed. O'Dowd's proposal of working with an AIDS charity was swiftly rejected by the judge.

Upon leaving the assignment office yesterday, Boy joked, "I'm going to be teaching basketball in Harlem."

No, really.

"He'll probably be raking leaves in Central Park, or something like that," said his lawyer.

Perfect! Can you imagine this guy in an orange jumpsuit raking leaves in the park, muttering profanities about Elton John under his breath?

According to Gothamist, George told reporters, "It would have been more useful to make 30 grand with a concert, rather than be prancing around in a park. I could have raised some money, could have done something that would have helped."

Boy, let Warren Buffett and Bill Gates save the world. We wanna see you sweat. It's good for your karma.

How would you like Boy George to fulfill his community service? Give us your best ideas and we'll send 'em to the sanitation department.

How about never showing himself in public ever again? That makeup shit is freaky...and without the makeup he looks like that uncle who hugs you for way too long and then pulls away all sweaty and excuses himself to the restroom. Or is that just me?

I'm a girl so that dirty uncle of yours probably isn't interested in me.

I think that if he should be forced to listen to KFed's album on repeat for three days.

many states have two options when it comes to the thing typically called "community service" in newspapers and whatnot. The first is "public works service"(picking up trash in orange vest). The second is "community service" (i.e. volunteering to play with abandoned animals at the shelter). Which you get often depends on whether you have a good lawyer or not. Obviously, community service is preferable to public works service.

Okay, I'm not a huge Boy George fan or anything, but I just wanna clear something up. That photo is Boy George in his costume for the play TABOO, where he played the part of the legendary performer, artist, and fashion designer, Leigh Bowery. That's not Boy George's normal clothes or anything that he wever wore as himself.

[Thanks, Andy, for clearing that up -- now all the Boy George fans can stop wetting themselves in frustration that their idol is being inappropriately portrayed.]

So... my recommendation for his community service? Though I think it may be imnpossible to top "he'll shovel 4 ya," I suggest he take over for President Bush. It's one George for another, he couldn't possibly do a worse job, and anything that gets W out of the Oval Office is community service.

I think he should have been given the option to do public service announcements and print ads, along with a concert to raise money and awareness for (insert cause of the day here).

Hmmph. I like him (used to like him more), but really he can do a charity concert anytime can't he? He hasn't. It would have been better to make him work an ADIS food chairty or whatever, but he's just being a diva. He should not complain - at least it didn't happen in fucking DUBAI!

You know, George, there's nothing STOPPING you from doing a concert to "raise 30 grand to help people" all by your damn self.

Since it's so important to you, and all.

I used to love Culture Club back in the day, but I think George did too many drugs to be anything great again.

Boy George Shouldn't Have To Do Anything he doesn't want to, they are cruel making him do community service.

First things first. i am a fan of Boy George...not the type who would know about that current pic of him and rosie there but, i have followed his music. To say that he hasn't written a good song in over 20 years is total ignorance. If anyone actual got their heads out of the toilet long enough and stopped listening to the mud flap crap that's on the radio these days they would know that.

I do believe though that George has to get his act together though and that drugs did mess up his career in the first place. I was hoping that he would have learned from past mistakes. I find totally irresponsible of him to get reaquanted with that side of his life when finally his creativeness was on the rise again. Very unfortunate and sad.

As for the communtiy service. The street sweeping thing would be obviuosly more embarrasement than anything if you ask me. If he really wants to come clean with his problem and do communtiy service why does he do an anti-drug campaign. Advertising the fact that his bright future was totally screwed by the throws of drug abuse! If he wants to prove that he has changed or at least tried to change wouldn't it be wise for him to try and convert some of the kids who listen to his mixes as a DJ that drugs are a path to nowhere fast?

He also has an up coming album which is a throw back of his old self (trying to win back the 34-44 age group I guess). Maybe he could promote some of the proceeds of his newest CD to a drug rehabilitation centre....your musical talents George are vast...take it like a man and do something about it!
