Hello My Name Is Mrs. Greenthumb*
Not that there's any reason to talk weddings at the 'gum, but I know a future couple with two iPods and a huuuuge music collection. This article about DJing your wedding with an iPod got me thinking: what would be the indie wedding playlist?
The article links to this message board discussion of scoring your own nuptials but it also recommends terrible, terrible music:
The rules are a)indie only (duh) b)at least two songs your Grandma might dance to c)at least one song that will get people who can't dance to try popping & locking.
4. Jump Around - House of Pain
[...]
6. YMCA by the Village People
7. Day Oh - Harry Belafonte
8. The Theme from the Loveboat
[...]
10. Play that Funky Music Whiteboy - Wild Cherry
11. Copa Cabana - Barry Manilow
12. Funkytown - Lipps Inc.
13. Celebrate or Jungle Boogie - Kool and the Gang
[...]
16. Mickey - Toni Basil
17. Tainted Love - Soft Cell
[...]
20. Centerfold - J. Geils Band
Don't think there are a lot of pop-locking indie songs out there? Ok, then we'll also count as "indie" rappers who are giving away a shitload of MP3s in defiance of their labels (via 3hive). But only those MP3s- if Digital Underground isn't linking to the Humpty Dance, you can't include it.

"What's In It For Me?"- The Walkmen
haha, just kidding
"After The Laughter" - ...and you know will us by the trail of dead
(for some reason, that interlude is just definitely someting I'd walk down the aisle to)

oh crap, i didnt even follow the rules. sorry :/

Awww, come on, "Celebrate" by Kool and the Gang is kind of a standard at weddings. Enjoyed (or at least tolerated) by happy people of all ages who have cause to celebrate about something.
Score = 0
I hate that "Celebrate" song. It's part of a traumatic event I was part of in 5th grade. I'd say more but I just might start crying on my laptop. Wah.
Score = 0
Granted, Justin: Celebrate is not actually a terrible song. But surely fIREHOSE has a song enjoyed by happy people of all ages?
Score = 0
I have nightmares about about being forced to dance to those horrible recommendations at my own wedding.
That being said I bet my Grams would totally get down and dirty to some Aceyalone, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - "skin of my yellow country teeth"
Score = 0
At my friend's wedding last year the bride and groom came out to the Top Gun Theme and then the Monkees Theme Song. And the first slow dance for the bride and groom was In The Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Score = 0
at my friend's wedding, they danced their first dance to 'do you realize' by the flaming lips. i thought that kind of kicked ass.
Score = 0
Page France's "Chariot"... "so we will be a happy ending"
Score = 0
wilco - jesus, etc :
not so much for jesus, but the "our love is all we have" part. neko case played it at her wedding, so i hear.
my bloody valentine - when you sleep:
i can't ever really make out the lyrics, so this may actually be a poor suggestion.
hmm. nevermind, this is harder than i thought.
Score = 0
"sound of settling" by death cab. i think that's perfect.
Score = 0
"Legal Man" "Boy With the Arab Strap" or "The State I'm In" by B&S. Who can't dance to B&S?
Feist's "Mushaboom" It's waaaaayyy AC already, and the whole song is about having a happy life after hardship.
I would also suggest "Mass Romantic" by the Pornos, but I'm not as sure about that one.
Score = 0
"all my rowdy friends have settled down"
"you can't hurry love"
"take ecstasy with me"
"blowjob queen"
"sex and candy"
"baby love child"
"polyester bride"
"mom's drunk"
"worst comes to worst"
"anesthesia"
"comfortably numb"
"heaven knows i'm miserable now"
Score = 0
Why "Funktown" gotta be "terrible, terrible music"? awwwwwwwwwwww.
Score = 0
We're getting married in May, and our playlist includes:
The aforementioned "Mushaboom"
"It's Only Time" - the Magnetic Fields
"I Never" - Neko Case
"Blue Bird" - The Rosebuds
"The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades..." - Sufjan Stevens
"For Me This Is Heaven" - Jimmy Eat World
"Crown of Love" - Arcade Fire
"Heart" - Stars
Wanted to put "Lover's Spit" by BSS, but that line about "giving head" might make the neighbors squirm.
When we're pronounced man and wife yadda yadda, we're going to have "Metroplis" by the Church playing.
Now some of that might be obvious, and some might be non-indie, but it's my wedding.
And if we gotta dance, we put the Minutemen or the D Plan on.

my sister and her fiance just got married, and their first dance was to "blue eyes" by the carey brothers (remember the garden state soundtrack?... that was a joke.)
they also got down to minus the bear and my morning jacket.
Score = 0
First dance:
Yo la Tengo - You can have it all
Intro: Astrud - No os Caseis
And then in random mode:
The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
Kaiser Chiefs - Everyday i love you less and less
Magic Numbers - Forever lost
Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
Kills - Love Is A Deserter
Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
Beck - Loser
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Let's Make This Precious
Doves - There Goes the Fear
...

Good ideas, got two more suggestions:
YLT- Our Way to Fall
The Pixies- La La Love You

what the fuck is indie?
I don't know, can I still use the Jesus & Mary Chain?
Score = 0
cat power's cover of "i found a reason" for a couple's first dance.
also, i would like to think that "house of jealous lovers" would encourage my grandma drop it like it's hot.
Score = 0
And "Celebrate" is in fact a terrible song.
But "Jungle Boogie" isn't. Still not wedding-appropriate.
I've got an idea: elope!
Score = 0
Since when did sad bastard music become wedding music? Those would be the most depressing weddings ever...
Give me some United State of Electronica. Any of their songs.
Score = 0
Mushaboom is way AC?
What does "AC" mean?
Score = 0
i agree with whb... those sound depressing. plus, if a song is slow/mellow and has the word 'love' in it... it doesn't mean it's romantic or wedding worthy. mushaboom and do you realize sound perfect.
Score = 0
Midnight Hour - Gary Wilson
I'll Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb
Working Day and Night - Michael Jackson
Do Your Thang - Charles Wright

songs from my wedding (5 years ago):
"come to me" - bjork (first dance)
"oscillate wildly" - the smiths (intro of wedding party)
"gorecki" - lamb (last dance)
"old school" - bran van 3000
"fade into you" - mazzy star
Score = 0
who wants to listen to an indie ipod playlist at a wedding? do yourself a favor and get a straight up funk band to play.
Score = 0
I DJ'd my wedding with an iPod and it was a blast! I'm a bit of a music snob and coming up with the playlists was the best part.
For the Reception:
1.) Playlist - Arrival Music...lots of cocktail music like Sinatra, Swingers Soundtrack, Tony Bennett
2.) Playlist - Dinner Music...lots of jazz like Miles Davis, Vince Guaraldi, Van Morrison
3.) Playlist - Dance...a mix of old and new like Hey Ya!, I Can't Keep Falling, Groove Is In The Heart, Cat Stevens
Absolutly no Chicken Dance, YMCA, The Hustle or any of that bullshit!
Score = 0
how about "stop!" by erasure
Score = 0
I've been to two weddings recently and the bride and groom had Nothing Else Matters by Metalica and You and Me Song by The Wannadies. The You and Me Song dancing was especially embarrassing. My wife wanted Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying by B&S but I had to veto it on account of my mother's heart.
Score = 0
I am doing the iPod wedding thing, and have been obsessing over it since you posted those links. My employer would like their 2 days back...
Anyway, Ive got Do You Realize as aforementioned, Northern Sky by Nick Drake, Sleep on the left side by Cornershop, and lots of mashups (thanks to you). Not the whole list obvs.

The Beachwood Sparks cover of "By Your Side"

These lists are great! I'm actually in the middle of researching a book about untraditional weddings, and I'd love to talk to some of you about your indie nuptual plans. I hope this isn't too spammy, but if you're interested, head over here.

There's listening music and then there's dancing music. Judging by most of the replies here I'm going to guess that most of you are white and can't dance for shit.
Score = 0
Exactly Chu, which is why god made the cocktail hour. Music folks like but arent danceable. I put some Roxy Music, David Byrne, OMD, Lightening Seeds, etc. And, it depends on what kind of dancing you like. For the life of me I dont understand why people call what they do to 'Twist and Shout' dancing. But wow, DJs seem to think people love doing whatever that is.

my best friend and i are making the playlist for her wedding and we think bright eyes' "first day of my life" is perfect.
