Hit Me Loverboy One More Time

Loverboy will be on NBC tonight performing an Enrique Iglesias song. It's for a new (i.e., imported/Americanized) reality show in which has-beens veteran hitmakers compete for lunch money.

Great concept (bands play their biggest hit and a contemporary song), but I'm so disappointed by the cover selections.

A Flock Of Seagulls: "I Ran" and "On The Way Down" (Ryan Cabrera)
Arrested Development: "Tennesse" and "Heaven" (Los Lonely Boys)
CeCe Peniston: "Finally" and "There You'll Be" (Faith Hill)
Loverboy: "Working For The Weekend" and "Hero" (Enrique Iglesias)
Tiffany: "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Breakaway" (Kelly Clarkson)
Other songfighters this season include Wang Chung, The Knack, Irene Cara, Sophie B. Hawkins, Cameo, Tommy Tutone, Vanilla Ice, and The Motels. I wanna see Vanilla take on "Mr. Brightside." That'll give us something to blog about.

Anyway, good luck Loverboy. Hope you're as good as this guy (link via Best Week Ever).

Here is the original Loverboy video for "Working For The Weekend."

i had tickets to go last night but didnt ... looks like i didnt miss much ...

i'd like to see some bands that were critically popular but never really broke big (for whatever reason) thrown into the mix ...

I'll have to dig out my Mike Reno (Loverboy) headband!! How can they lose with those immortal lyrics: You wanna piece of my heart?/You better start from the start/You wanna be in the show?/Come on, baby, let's go!

this show is going to be sweet in twenty years when brittney spears is on, competing against sisqo and that douchebag from creed.

I want to see Vanilla Ice sing "rapture" or "vogue". That would be so badass and cool.

I hope Arrested Development wins so Fox doesn't cancel it. Jason Bateman is soooo cute!

I would think it'd be manditory for Vanilla Ice to do a Marshall Mathers piece.

That's true. If he doesn't cover "vogue" he should definitely cover an annoying eminem song. I was going to specify, but they're all annoying, so take your pick.

Damn, you're not lying about the bad song choices! I'm convinced that the powers that be had more control over that than the artists, because this is ridiculous. They probably have it set up to where they want a certain person/band to win this thing.

By the way, have you ever watched that VH1 show Kept, with Jeri Hall? That's one of the most entertaining shows I've seen in quite a while.

My friend went to the Tiffany taping last night and wrote:

Yeah, it was good fun. We got to be in the dancing section so it was pretty cool. But the dancing section doesn't get to vote. But I think it was pretty obvious who was gonna win by the cheers from everyone. Tiffany was awesome, but she didn't get to autograph my shirt. At one point, she saw my shirt and pointed at me. Pretty neat.

[The shirt is a turquoise off the shoulder torn sweatshirt from the Tiffany tour back in the 80's]

Damn, that song has some of the craziest lyrics:

That old dog has chained you up alright
Give you everything you need
To live inside a twisted cage
Sleep beside an empty rage
I had a dream I was your hero

Damn I wish I was your lover
I’ll rock you till the daylight comes
Make sure you are smiling and warm
I am everything
Tonight I’ll be your mother
I'll do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind and you won’t feel ashamed

Open up on the inside gonna fill you up gonna make you cry

This monkey can’t stand to see you black and blue
Give you something sweet each time you
Come inside my jungle book
What is it just too good
Don’t say you’ll stay
’cause then you go away

Shucks for me there is no other
You’re the only shoe that fits
I can’t imagine I’ll grow out of it
Damn I wish I was your lover

If I was your girl believe me
I’d turn on the rolling stones
We could groove along and feel much better
I could do it forever and ever
Give me an hour to kiss you
Walk through heaven’s door I’m sure
We don’t need no doctor to feel much better
Let me in
Forever and ever and ever and ever

I sat on a mountainside with peace of mind
I lay by the ocean making love to her with visions clear
Walked for days with no one near
And I return as chained and bound to you

I watched this show last night expecting a total trainwreck (and in some respects it was. I'm looking in your direction Flock of Seagulls guy with the death metal-looking buddies) but Arrested Development's take on Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven" was frigging amazing. I leaned over to my equally stunned wife and said "They should release this as a single tomorrow."

I emailed a link to that video to Loverboy's manager. She's going to forward it to the band and let me know what they think of it.

Actually, that annoying British yob said next week's show features The Knack, Tommy Tutone, The Motels, Vanilla Ice, and (the token faceless band nobody will care about) Haddaway. Anyone who lived through the '80s will not want to miss that line-up!

WHAT IS LOVE? BABY DON'T HURT ME!! can't wait for that one!

I did catch the first episode. Arrested Development definitely have a good vibe going on and I wasn't surprised at all that they won. Tiffany was off-key several times. I could hear Simon's disses in my head. As much as I didn't want her to suck, she just doesn't have "it" anymore. Also, A Flock of Seagulls sounded shiitey and without the awesome haircut, they're nothing. Why would they ever agree to cover Ryan Cabrera?? Homeboy lost his voice badly.

And the host is really really hot for a teeth-bleaching Brit boy...but damn he is very adorable and natural in his delivery. Not at all a condescending, know-it-all, little bitch like Seacrest Out.

haha david! that is funny. no, not that she was ever a credible star but in terms of a marketable teen icon "it" factor is what i meant...i think haha

anyway i still have a crush on that brit host!
