Huppie: Still Available

Add it to the list: "Yindie" joins "Yupster" and "Indie Yuppie". (via LHB)

Another way to test for indie yuppiedom: you're Kevin Shields trying to keep a bar from staying open late. Because of noise. (via ILM)

Huppie's taken my friend. That would be the Hippie/yuppie. Think dreadlocks and North Face...

maybe we just don't have them in nyc...the dreads always go with military surplus jackets or something similarly fake-poor

Could we have a contest to determine the agreed upon term for this phenomenon?

I'd vote for "yupster."

what about "yippie"? the people that have the no dubya stickers on the backs of their volvos and drink seattle's best coffee because they don't want to support the starbucks corporate monster. I bet they wear white belts, too.

Yippie is already taken. Take a look at Abbie Hoffman and the 60's...they used the term.

maybe the solution is to build a new "[blank] urban professional" entirely.

fashionable = fuppies
cliquish = cuppies
snob niche = snuppies

How about yucksters?

if i were Kevin Shields i wouldn't want to be forced to listen to shit music either.

it's one thing if it's the LES, where noise is completely part and parcel of the neighborhood and any "yupsters" who moved down there when it got popular and expensive can fuck right the fuck off and stop having the bars raided.

judging by the article it's a pretty placid English town being invaded by drunken wannabe fashionistas.
quiet is good sometimes too.

I'm not saying Kevin Shields is wrong, but living in a quiet, upscale neighborhood and complaining about the pop music at the new bar is kind of an indie yuppie thing, no?

yeah, i can't really argue that it isn't.
maybe i'm just projecting my own disappointment at the continued and complete absence of new music from MBV/Shields. he should be making our ears bleed with joy not lobbying civic coalitions!

While their certainly seems to be a stereotype in the States of the Indie Yuppie, this article's "test" was certainly lame. Sadly, here in Sydney, all the "trendy" people listen to Ministry of Sound compilations. The only Indie night in town, "Purple Sneakers" is a mecca of fat girls in wearing oversized Interpol t-shirts.

hahha true about purple sneakers seppo.. but I think we have our own form of indie-yuppie stereotype who shops at surry hills, dangerfield, paddington markets and general pants so they can look hip at bang gang, wets themselves over a tsubi sale, loves everything on modular recordings, lined up at 6am to see the strokes at the gaelic club and studies at COFA.

I think the whole thing is a ruse by the Bush Administration to make us believe that every white city person btw 25 and 35 is makin' tons of money and living in high fashion when probably the majority are totally fucking broke and living paycheck to paycheck- like me.
