I Heard It Through del.icio.us/tag/music

Speaking of covers, I ran into this MP3 of the Kaiser Chiefs covering Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine." Not bad, but it definitely won't make the list of all-time "covers that eclipsed the originals." It was recorded live, then podcasted, then edited with an open-source audio editor, then sent via SSH over Wi-Fi to a vinyl pressing plant in Oslo where somebody munged the levels. And then it was encoded without using alt-preset-standard.

Still, if you like the KCs, or any of the other new British bands, you'll like this. Props to So Much Silence for picking it up!

talking of del.icio.us/tag/music -- I'm pretty fond of http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mp3?setcount=100 , too. Distributed mp3 blog.

However, del.icio.us users are really over-fond of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! -- they show up again, and again, and again...

The Kaiser Cheifs version is pretty bad I thought. They did it for the new Warchild album which features some of the best UK bands around at the minute. The Kaiser Chiefs is one of the worst tracks (as well as Boy George and Anthony off of the Johnsons version of Happy Xmas(War is over), randomly). The rest of the album is excellent though, go to www.warchildmusic.com to check it out. All for a good cause too.

Justin- I dig the filetype:mp3 trick, but I haven't figured out how to make sure I don't hit anything labeled "IDM".

As I’ve mentioned in a previous comment, I’m a huge Kaiser Chiefs fan. So maybe my opinion is a little biased, but I actually really like their version of the song. It’s hard to cover a standard, especially since there are so many great versions out there already, like the covers done by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Gladys Knight. I think Kaiser Chiefs did a really great job of making the song their own and applying their own unique sound to the track. It’s great that so many bands participated in raising money for Warchild. I hope the release of the cd raises awareness as well as money.

This is really a cover of the Slits' version of the song.

i don't know. dl'ing a song from a charity album for free seems a little wrong. it's be like if you stole the "we are the world" 12 inch in '85.

especially when you can buy the song for less than a dollar. and you'll somehow be helping some poor child in some war torn country.

i don't know. maybe i'm a hypocrite.

Neb is 100% correct. Shame on stereogum for not including this info. The slits still own all covers of this song.

I thought it was Creedence Clearwater Revival's not Marvi Gaye's.
And the Slits cover is the best, but don't think their other songs stand to the level.

Jim: yeah, and if I could figure out how to skip those fucking podcasts (snore) that'd be great, too. no luck so far though :(

give me a break...he linked to one song, not the whole album...self-righteous knuckleheads. you wouldn't even have know about it otherwise. now you do, so buy it. sheesh, everybody's a crybaby.

however you justify it, it's still a track for charity.. and it is still a little lame giving it away. just ask sally struthers.

you can buy the songs individually from itunes, karmadownload and the war child website. and all the proceeds go to help some poor kid in some poor war torn country. i don't know - i can't rip 99 cents out of some starving kid's hand.. my damn morals get in the way. but do what you want...

considering the album was advertised all over bbc and pitchfork a month ago when it first came out and broke all sorts of download records - i'm sure most people actually did know about it. knucklehead.

weak. and if you have to say "maybe I'm a hypocrite" then you probably are and just talking to talk.

and with the US to Pounds conversion it's like $1.75 a song, so maybe it's even worse now to rip that out of some poor kids hand! lol

i think that posting one or so tracks to promote the album, charity or not, only promotes the purchases of it...I don't hear you crying about it with any regular artist album...

I posted the Kaiser Chiefs track, so I'll take the heat. However, contrary to popular belief, not everyone reads Pitchfork (gasp!) or BBC. So the KCRW podcast was the first I'd heard of it. I'm assuming others hadn't heard of it as well; strange as it may seem, some of us don't let Pitchfork dictate our listening habits.

Now, couldn't we be blaming KCRW for making this podcast available in the first place? A podcast is, after all, an mp3. All I did was cut and paste the two portions of the song together. I also did provide links where people could go buy the album or individual songs. I'd like to think one song out of the 20 perhaps would inspire people to purchase the album.

Nonetheless, it's a good debate. But I like Dodge's argument: Where are all these complaints with any other album?
