The awards has always been about what musical trends were popular.

Now - Hip Hop and Pop
Then - Rap Metal and kids eating it up and Pop
Then's then - Grunge and Herion Chic and Pop
Before that - Parachute Pants and Micheal Jackson's and R.Kelly's secrets locked safely in this closets with the other skeletons and Pop
Before even that - Cyndi Lauper and Ah ha's "Take On Me" genius video. Oh, and pop.

I'm still trippin' off of Britany getting called the "Susan Lucci" of the VMA's LOL LOL...you would think she wouldve won as much as they play her lousy video's...and as far as the above pic goes what s up with her and her new found religion she probably cant even spell 'Kaballah. (0:

I don't think the list of Best Video noms was too bad. Seriously guys, this is MTV, not the WB (har har). People have unrealistic expectations and short memories. Like 5 years ago, the artists on the show would have sucked so much more. The freaking pholyphonic spree played. I saw Franz Ferdinand nominated for a couple and also Modest Mouse. Not to mention some EXCELLENT hip-hop acts, Kanye, Jay-Z, and Outkast.

And I was kind of liking how much "Get out there and vote" buzz that was happenin.' As much as I hate P. Diddy, for some reason he still has a lot of power with the MTV set.

The production of the show and the lack of people showing up was totally lame, though. I totally agree with that. Nothing really wild or crazy.

What, the majority of the music can't be black music? Hell, blacks have dominated mainstream music since Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. Come the fuck on you ignorant piece of shit. Wake up and deal with the times? When you go to a bar these days what get's the people on their feet? Hip-Hop that's what. And this coming from a Radiohead fan. lundym's comment sort of makes me mad. First off, this is MTV and most of them don't stand for anything, white or black or latino. No reason to really bring race into it.

Secondly, while hawking shit is lame, for rappers, I really don't blame them. I would do it if I was a black man. You know shit is hard out there, and you'd want to get yours while you can. If you found yourself with a platinum album and Reebok is asking you to endorse (and approve the design too!) sneakers, you'd do it. There's no point in comparing these people to TV on the radio, totally irrelevant comparision. They do different things. There's scores of alternative artists out there, they know who they are and that they won't be on MTV.

Call them talentless (but seriously Usher CAN dance and sing, he just can't talk or write), but don't blame them for taking what's given them. It's pretty naive.

alright, i gotta make myself clear on some things cuz people seem mad about what i said.
first of all, i firmly believe that black music and black culture dictates what happens in pop culture. without chuck berry, muddy waters, and little richard, we wouldn't have the rolling stones and the beatles. and without the beatles, one couldn't even begin to imagine what pop music would sound like today.
my problem is that songs like "air force ones" by nelly, "right thurr", "h to the izzo", and songs like that are just trying to create slang words to be used in pop culture, and are really just gimmicky. a band or artist doesn't have to be politically conscious, but a lot of them just have their eyes on the money and will sacrafice their integrity for it.
also, i don't think yellowcard and jet and those bands stand for anything. that's why i think they suck too.
and i know that outkast has a clothing line. but andre 3000 has exceptional style, and i don't mind seeing clothing inspired by his taste. but a clothing line from nelly is stupid. the guy wears a band-aid below his eye.
and yeah, i know that mos def has starred in commercials and in other venues as well. big fucking deal. that has nothing to do with what i've been saying. he's been acting since the age of 14, long before he had a record deal or anything. acting is a passion of his.

and yeah, i love hip-hop. a tribe called quest, mf doom, stuff madlib produces, de la soul, mos def, outkast, boogie down productions, ultramagnetic mc's, public enemy, tons of stuff. i grew up on it. there are some good artists in the mainstream, but you have to go to the underground to find anything credible. but ask any good mc (not chingy or nelly) about that state of hip-hop, and i think they'll probably have some of the same views as me.
