I Predict A "Where Are They Now" Special In 5 Years

The largely unknown Bristish band The Kaiser Chiefs finally divulge their ages in The Guardian:

Until recently, they were coy about their ages (guitarist Andrew "Whitey" White is 30, drummer Nick Hodgson 28, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick "Peanut" Baines and singer Ricky Wilson all 27). "A&R men see human ages as dog years," Wilson explains. "If you're past 25, you're dead."
Uh-oh... we're all in our early 60's at Stereogum. KC also candidly, if somewhat cynically, talk about their formula for success:
There's a common misconception that bands just chance upon their sound, and any hint of contrivance is unacceptably cynical, but most bands invent themselves. Kaiser Chiefs just couldn't afford to fail.

"Every detail was important," says Hodgson. "What we wore, everything." They started off banning jeans from the band; at their first Kaiser Chiefs gig, Wilson wore a tracksuit and flat cap. "Some of the early experiments with what we wore were a bit" - a thoughtful pause - "stupid. The thing that made it was when we put a hat on Peanut's head. What's the difference between Parva and Kaiser Chiefs? Peanut's got a hat on."

Don't forget to check out one of the many available Kaiser Chiefs ringtones. I have it set to play "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" when my mom calls.

They're going to fade by the time their next record comes out. At least I hope so

God I hate them. You'd think they were the Rolling Stones or something the way they shoot off. If they somehow become a lasting success I predict a riot within the music community.

>>"If you're past 25, you're dead."

I'm glad major labels have such a great standard. I can't tell you how many artiscally fantastic records are being crafted by 20 year olds...no really I can't tell you.

Speaking of being coy about how old you are, Alex Kapranos admits in the new issue of Q that he had previously lied about his age.

He's 33. That makes him four years older than Gaz Coombs.

Hey, at least the Kaiser Chiefs are fairly up-front about the image thing. Remember the Bravery vs. The Killers? Now THAT was effing pathetic.

Jeff Tweedy is 38.

And what's with all the Eminem-style mom hating? I thought people stopped that when they got older and didn't hold a grudge from when they were 14 and couldn't stay out past 10:30 to play Kick the Can, in the ally behind their house.

So far as British bands go, they're not particularly arrogant. Nor are they particularly good, mind you. But they're the most inevitable band to turn up this year. Seriously, how could these guys not exist the year after FF, the Killers et al broke?

I hope Kaiser Chiefs are not a “largely unknown” band! I thought they’ve gotten a decent amount of exposure lately. I even know teenagers’ parents who like them!

Anyway, I’m a devoted fan and a member of their message board. It’s been a bit of a joke on there, about how no one knows how old they are, so I’m happy to see it’s settled once and for all. I don’t see why they never told anyone in the first place, as it’s not like any one of them is ancient. I think they are very careful about how they are perceived. In one sense, that’s fantastic, as it’s nice to see someone put a lot of time into shaping their image. On the other hand, it’s kind of creepy, as it can be seen as somewhat false. However, their music is superb, and that’s the most important thing. I’d highly recommend the album to anyone.

I will definitely check out the ringtones. I have a couple people in mind that the “Everyday I Love You Less and Less” ringtone might be appropriate for.

I personally love the Kaiser Chiefs, I saw them as the headliner for Weezer and Foo Fights and they were amazing - their stage presence was phenomenal, there was so much energy. I enjoy most of their music, granted some of their lyrics aren't that exciting. However there are PLENTY of bands out there that everyone rages over, who's lyrics are shit. At least the Kaiser Chiefs are pretty decent.

Damn. I love the Kaiser Chiefs! I'd like to know what the rest of you who hate them listen to. Their show in DC was awesome. Whoever said they were arrogant - COME ON! There are many bands out right now with much more prominent egos than KC. The Kaiser Chiefs are too dorky to have heads the size of hot air balloons. This is their first album, give them a chance to hone their songwriting skills. You guy should bond together to hate the Top 40 Only people of America, not the people who actually take the time to listen to bands not known by the average American. And if you still disagree with me, atleast don't get all pissy about the band in question using a stream of name-calling and profanities like a 14 year old boy. Can't there be a way to express dislike without sounding idiotic?

I think they are good band so do a lot of other people, this doesn't make us all right though. Thats why people need to shut the fuck and respect people and their tastes. Just because you hate something doesn't make it shit. Just because I love something doesn't make it good. You people need to grow up. Also, how sad are you posting on a forum about band you don't like...Go post on that shitty, mindless website and it should be www.ihatekaiserchiefs.co.uk....Not The Kaiser Chiefs, or Keizer Chiefs, or whatever. If you are going to bitch and moan learn to spell you fools.

M is right. Give your opnion but make it constructive. Not just slagging them off.

Part of the appeal is the lyrics and the song writing. Its fun and silly but I would like to see some of you lot write songs that sell thousands of records, get huge world tours and have hundreds and hundreds of people singing along. When you do that, let me know. I'm not a huge fan, but I admire anyone who has guts to go on stage and perform songs they have written themselves. Even if they are rubbish.

To finish, they are REALLY nice people as well. Intersting, funny and very kind. They have some variety, unlike so many mindless emo/screamo/ect ect bands nowadays.

Oh, and MYSWEETbeard...Who died and made you NME hmmm?
XxX
