Indie Rockers Go Classic Rock For Pat Spurgeon
Saturday night at The Independent in San Francisco, Rogue Wave hosted a benefit to raise money for drummer Pat Spurgeon's medical bills (he is in need of a kidney transplant). Stereogum was lucky enough to meet Pat when the band played our South By Southwest showcase in March; we had no idea, however, that he was born with one kidney and would be on dialysis just weeks later. (A transplant in '93 served him well until now).
The weekend event included performances by Rogue Wave, Ben Gibbard, Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Ryan Miller (Guster), John Vanderslice, and special guests. Lemony Snickett (Daniel Handler) MC‘d.
Permutations of indie all-star crew rocked out on a handful of classic rock covers, including tunes by the Monkees, Graham Nash, the Beatles, Nirvana, Elvis Costello, and the Who.
Here's the whole gang performing "(What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, And Understanding):

Pat is one of the sweetest guys ever - hell, that entire band is. I had no idea either until this weekend. My wishes and best are with Mister Spurgeon.

i was at the show. it was a pretty frickin' amazing gig. nada surf killed - played about half of their "weight is a gift album", a couple of covers and some unreleases tracks. vanderslice was even good, and i don't generally like him - had ben gibbard come on stage and help him play an mk ultra song. gibbard played a set of death cab songs, ended with "such great heights" and played the monkees and graham nash cover. rogue wave was fantastic as always, they played a few of their songs but it was mostly covers and guest help.
there was also a raffle, apparently yo la tengo sent about a thousand signed copies of their albums, signed new pornos...all sorts of signed shit. the grand prize in the raffle was "a long, uncomfortable hug on-stage from john vanderslice", with piano accompanyment from ben gibbard.
anyways, sorry to get long winded - it was a hoot.

I was also at the show. I agree, it was pretty amazing. Basically everyone including and after Vanderslice did a very good set: JV, Nada Surf, Ben Gibbard and Rogue Wave.
I wrote a bit about it if you want to read more:

That Elvis Costello cover sounds bloody awful to me.

The sound quality at the show was much better than the youtube video. I think it was just about the most kick ass show I've ever seen. Lots of fun.
