Indie Rockers Play Dress-Up For The New York Times

thubmnail icon: Indie Rockers Play Dress-Up For The New York Times

Coachella is already the most fashionable of the summer festivals by virtue of its proximity to Los Angeles, so this year the NYT ran with the glam, taking a bagful of high fashion garments and draping them on a bunch of rock stars for a fun little photo gallery. The spread runs in this week's T magazine, but can be viewed now in this collection of shots by photographer Sebastian Kim. Included: elders Moz and Robert Smith, along with pics of Beirut, Girl Talk, Lykke Li, Gang Gang Dance with Public Enemy, and No Age with Vivian Girls. If you like Jenny's look in that photo with Brandon and Conor, click here for detailed info on where to purchase each item. Total outfit for only $5,885! (Sandals not included.)

Years from now, this will be looked upon as the moment that indie rock jumped the shark.

No, now is that moment.

Robert Smith, I don't know what to think, but at least you are not selling trendy overpriced crap to rich people.

how much do you think ariel pink gets for posing in a $3,000 shawl? bet it's not enough to buy said shawl.

Didn't you guy post a picture of this some time ago? I think I've seen the Vivian Girls shot before... somewhere. It's hilarious!

Zach Gordon looks good doing some chilaxing and The Moz looks great. There's some guy imitating Kurt Cobain. The Kills picture looks boring, which is surprising considering all the cool shots they've got. Seems Robert Smith got there late and missed his appointment with the stylist.

That's it! I've gone through all the pictures so you don't have to.

these people already jumped the shark. especially those Vivian Girls. i'm sooo sick and tired of hearing about them. they're whores for the camera...literally. i saw them looking for camera crews at SXSW this year. give it up ladies. The Supremes or Shaggs you aint, and never will be.

"Indie Rock" doesnt exist anymore

I think it's hilarious that even during a fashion photoshoot, Conor Oberst refuses to take off that hat.

Nope. Hip hop is still making money.

Bless Robert Smith and Moz, both in their own clothes. All is not lost. Sad stuff though.

Morrissey is not indie and should never ever hang out with these middling, forgettable hipsters.

The only 2 people that matter in this set...Robert Smith and Morrissey..."Artist's own clothes"...exactly.

So apparently you can make a music career out of mixing really shitty club bangers together. Nice work Girl Talk. You've officially arrived. lol

Ha, Vivian Girls and No Age together. Kinda hot, but seriously, is there anything indier than that picture?

This is pretty fucking laughable (Intended response: "OMG I WANT JENNY'S SHADES & ZACH'S SHIRT!!").

I don't blame them for seizing free publicity, but there's a difference between doing an interview with a mainstream publication (good) and doing a fucking fashion-shilling shoot (lame). It gives you more respect for the real artists out there, though. Jeff Mangum or The National sure as hell wouldn't do this shit.
