Indie Rocktober Playlist

Catbirdseat's October playlist is one of his best yet. White Magic, Earlimart, Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom (beautiful cut, but I stupidly bought this LP on vinyl, which means it's not on my iPod; no more buying new albums on vinyl!). Download here.

And while you're at it... Thirteen newish guilt-free MP3 downloads.

Delgados - "Sink Or Swim"
Frausdots - "Dead Wrong"
Call And Response - "Eclipse
Clem Snide - "Fill Me With Your Light"
Panda Bear - "Track One"
The Black Keys - "Grown So Ugly"
Dolorean - "The Search"
Robyn Hitchcock - "Television"
The Legends - "Call It Ours"
Mark Lanegan - "Methamphetamine Blues"
Tom Waits - "How's It Gonna End"
Q And Not U - "Wonderful People"
Wolf Eyes - "Stabbed In The Face"
I especially like the Delgados and Q And Not U tracks ... anyone got the full albums? Worth buying?

it's actually pretty easy (albeit time-consuming) to encode vinyl to mp3 with finyl vinyl.

Or by using a MP3 player such as an Archos AV140 to record the audio directly to MP3.

Did I mention that I don't like iPods?

Sorry I'm just a troll.

Second on the Delgados. Much less bombast than The Great Eastern or Hate, but stronger songs and performances. I'm liking it a lot.

The Delgados album is pretty good, but I'm not floored. The Frausdots album, on the other hand, is fucking wonderous.

I was gonna buy that today! But I bought Los Borges instead. More on that later.

Someone send me Frausdots songs!

the rest of Universal Audio is great, however, i'd say download Q and Not U's newest full length, Power, before buying.

i personally don't like it too much at all. it's even worse than their last record, Different Damage. their first record, No Kill, No Beep Beep is brilliant, but they lost their bassist and decided to not replace him, and become a 3-piece, and their sound has just not even been remotely the same since, and sadly imo, not for the better. their last 2 records don't suck really, but they should have changed the name of the band imo.

I just love the Frausdots record so much because it combines four of my favorite things: Late 80's Church, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Lloyd Cole & the Commotions. If I could have made it myself, I would have.

i can't believe how popular the black keys have become. i know those kids and think it's funny pat (the drummer) used to be in a synth-pop band from akron as well called churchbuilder (www.shelflife.com/churchbuilder). now it's blueser-than-thou. whatev. more power to 'em.

Q and not U's album, Power, is great. I agree with earlier comments that No Kill No Beep Beep is their best, but if you like "Wonderful People" you'll like the whole album - and it only gets better with each listen.

Matthew at fluxblog posted that Q and Not U song a couple of weeks back. I got the album, it's awesome. Definitely worth a purchase. :)

"Power" is far more mainstream-sounding than either "Different Damage" or "No Kill No Beep Beep," in that it puts the math rock aside and concentrates more on dance rhythms.

On the other hand, they've written a few songs on "Power" that are painful listens, with no real equal on either of their previous LPs.

It's worth a listen, but I'm not sure it's worth the money.

Do you have a list of all the bands/artists you have discussed? Sort of a condensed archive? My friend just made me a mix with Stellastarr*, Modest Mouse, and a bunch of other bands. I didn't have the playlist (just a CD. I know, I know.), so all I knew was whether I liked the song or not. And I loved it all -- it's such a great mix. I started googling the lyrics to discover that these were bands that people had been discussing (and in the case of Modest Mouse, for years). Now I'm curious as to whether you have discussed them too...

i agree on the popularity of the black keys. however, after what i think was a sucky last album... this Rubber Factory is sooo unbelievably good!

i love the delgados record - gorgeous. and the call and response record might be my favorite record of the year. sooo different from their first one, and the singer sounds like the love child of karen carpenter and laeticia sadier.

I still kinda can't believe that people not from DC talk about Q and Not U. I was at the No Kill No Beep Beep release show... they're totally a hometown favorite. Good to hear the new one is fantastic (I'm on college, so I'm broke.. no new music for a while that isn't burned for me).

I liked all these albums with the exception of the Wolf Eyes release, it was a huge disappointment for me.

Spread that Joanna Newsom love, Janelle. She has my favorite release of the year, by far, The Milk-Eyed Mender. I'll be glad to share her earlier releases or live shows if anyone's interested.

I have been enchanted by the music of the Delgados since seeing them play a live double set at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth last year. I like Universal Audio but I think time will show that it does not have the staying power of albums like The Great Eastern or Hate. Hate is a top 5 album for me! I would make it compulsory listening for everyone. There aren't many albums that friends of mine persevere and really like but EVERYONE I know who has listened to Hate 3 times loves it.
I saw them at Shepherds Bush Empire last week and the encore (with a stronger strings element than the rest of the set) got the best response of the evening.
Nige Edge - PS does anyone have the playlist from the gig at Shepherds Bush? If so please could it be sent to my email address? I would be eternally grateful. Thanks.
