Indie-Yuppies In Canada

Hey kids, The Star (the Toronto daily, not the celeb glossy) is doing a piece on our favorite subject. If you are a Canadian indie-yuppie, they'd love to speak with you. E-mail Dana Brown at DBrown@thestar.ca.

You might be a Canadian Indie-Yuppie if you feel obligated to have an set of mp3s labeled "The Arcade Fire" and another set labeled "Le Arcade Feu".

(The same goes for Broken Social Scene and La Scene Sociale Casse)

I apologize. I was busy making mp3s for Le fil d'amour, Bryon d'Adams, and Le Rush.

The Toronto Star: Left wing paper. For old fuddy-duddies who actually read in-depth, lengthy articles about current affairs, politics, world and social issues, etc. The Careers pullout section is especially large.

The Toronto Sun: Right-wing paper. Like, real easy to, like, read. Dedicates a lot of its pages to pictures of bikini girls, major Hollywood releases, and strip club ads. Probably devoted about five pages to Canada winning the Miss Universe pageant last night.

I think Stereogum was referring to the contrast between the Toronto Star and The Star--the celebrity magazine. As for it being a paper for fuddy-duddies, The Toronto Star has the largest circulation of a paper in Canada (yes, it's larger than The Globe), and it is the only major daily in Canada that hasn't recently been bleeding circulation (The Sun, for instance, loses more than 5% of its circulation a year).

A few months back the Star had an article about "hipster burnout" so I find it kind of funny that they're going back on the topic. Thus: you might be a canadian indie yuppie if you read that article in the star and laughed/made fun of (with friends no less) at the hipster but secretly saw yourself being described in said article.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt
