Inside The Rockers Studio: Adem

Here we have a few uncirculated mixes of "Launch Yourself" from Love And Other Planets (including a typically trippy contribution from Adem's Fridge-mate Kieran Hebden -- as Four Tet) and a host of revealing responses to Bernard Pivot's canned questionnaire.

And the original:
Adem - "Launch Yourself" (MP3)

ADEM
1. What is your favorite word?
DIFFICULT. WORDS ARE LIKE CHILDREN - YOU CAN'T PICK A FAVOURITE. THOUGH I DO LIKE WORDS THAT WORK LIKE "SVELTE" OR "PLINTH." I ALSO LIKE "PERFIDIOUS" AND "AUSPICIOUS." I LOVE IT WHEN A SIMPLE WORD BECOMES FOREIGN TO YOUR BRAIN AND MOUTH IF YOU SAY OR WRITE IT MANY TIMES OVER. WORDS LIKE "SLIP" OR "WITH."

2. What is your least favorite word?
ALL THE WORDS I THINK I HATE TAKE ON A NEW LEASE OF LIFE WHEN I THINK ABOUT THEM. I HAVE SPENT AN EMBARRASSINGLY LONG TIME ON THIS QUESTION AND HAVE DECIDED TO GIVE UP BEFORE I GO INSANE.

3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
EXPERIMENTAL ADVENTURES THAT SOMETIMES DRESS UP AS FRIENDLY FACES.

4. What turns you off?
LACK OF IMAGINATION. JUMPING ON BANDWAGONS. THOUGHTLESSNESS. IMPOLITENESS.

5. What is your favorite curse word?
MY MOUTH IS AS CLEAN AS A WHISTLE, ALTHOUGH I DO HAVE A CHUCKLE WHEN PEOPLE GET CREATIVE - A YELL OF "BOLLOCKACUNTICHOPFUCKBALLS."

6. What sound or noise do you love?
I LOVE IT WHEN TWO DISTINCT SOUNDS LINK TOGETHER UNEXPECTEDLY AND BEAUTIFULLY.

7. What sound or noise do you hate?
THE HARSH GABBA/NOISECORE THAT MY NEIGHBOURS SOMETIMES PLAY THROUGH THEIR CLUB PA IN THEIR FRONT ROOM AT ABOUT 4AM TUESDAY - THURSDAY. THERE'S A TIME AND A PLACE FOR ALL TYPES OF MUSIC, I'M SURE, BUT IF I HAD TO CONSIGN ONE FRAGMENT OF THE IDEA OF MUSIC TO THE COSMIC DUSTBIN OF TIME, IT WOULD BE THAT PARTICULAR BRAND OF AGGRESSIVE GABBA/NOISECORE THAT WAKES ME UP AND STOPS ME SLEEPING WHILE MY WINDOWS SHAKE.

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
NEARLY BECAME A MATHEMATICIAN ... BUT NOWADAYS, ALTHOUGH I LOVE IT, I'M NOT SURE I'M SO DRAWN TO THE CAREER. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED ACTING, I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE EVER LEAVING MUSIC, THOUGH.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
LORD HIGH EMPEROR OF THE WORLD. IT WOULD HAVE ITS PERKS, I'M SURE, BUT AT WHAT COST, I ASK, WHAT COST?

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you
arrive at the Pearly Gates?
"ERM, I THINK YOU'RE A BIT EARLY ... "

Catch him on tour with Juana Molina next month!

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...

Horse Feathers - "Father"

Portland songwriter Justin Ringle's evocative vocal twang and sharp lyricism are at the center of Horse Feathers' bedroom Americana. The band's second album House With No Home, which follows 2006's Words Are Dead, finds Ringle's vision fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist/composer...
